    This started out as a simple oil/gearbox fluid change... Just about destroyed the transmission and then got very close to burning the car down with a full tank of gas... OMG!!

    you gals and your home.

    The joys of classic car ownership! At least with these old cars it's a cheap and easy fix.

      It is pretty straight forward... Mostly it is just poor maintenance or "deferred" maintenance. Get past all that and they are surprisingly reliable ;)

    My father has a 356B, and it still runs, though he can't drive it due to old age, so I've been looking after it myself. I don't work on cars myself, I spend money to fix it, and so far has been pretty stable. Interested in seeing what problems come up with these cars.

    Saw the oil change coming in the video with the fuel cock as there was an oil filter sitting on the workbench ;) The oil change itself is straightforward enough, but it turned out to be a lot more challenging this time! This car has thrown a curveball once again; I bet she's jealous of miss Eva ;) Great to see you made the gasket on your own.

    That pump on your gear oil bottle would do a better job of getting oil out of the oil filter canister than a turkey baster :)

  • @Jastor00

    I've had both of these issues with my C coupe so can feel your pain! A note - there is an adjustment on the shoes for the parking brake (star gear accessed through a hole in the rotor). I'd try that first before making the adjustment up front. The leaking shift nose cone seal is common, but the amount of gear oil in the tunnel sure isn't! WOW. That's a serious leak. Good thing you were cautious and noticed the oil leakage. The gas leak at the front is dangerous for sure, but it also dissolves undercoating so watch for that too. Nice little C coupe, tho! I like the foglights and the Carrera rear valence.

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Sean! Duh! you are totally right! Disk brakes... That totally slipped my mind! I'm used to the drums on the '58. My solution for the seal is coming up, but I pulled more than a Qt out of the tunnel... Never seen that much before! And, yes, the undercoating took a beating from the brake fluid leak and the fuel cock leak. I'm still wondering where the other half of the gasket wandered off to. Maybe in the tank? Jeepers... Enjoy your C cars :) Franny

    Wow! You certainly have your hands full with that 356. Great job making your own gasket. I was surprised at how much cork was used in those cars. It looks like you have plenty left for future projects as well. As always, great recordings and editing and I'll be looking forward to the next one.

    Reminds me of so many of my projects. Start on one things and find another problem. I got nervous when you were working around the gas tank. Didn't want to hear a boom. Takes very little gasoline to make a pretty big explosion. Thanks for the video. Great as usual. Can't wait for the next one.

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gas is super scary... It is pretty inert in liquid form. The gas sender has an open electrical coil and a wiper and it just sits in the gas all day. Nutty, but it works...

    Love you ladies! Can you please teach my wife that there is more to a car than keeping gas in it? She is not very good at that, BTW. I could not tell you how many times I have asked her when the gas light came on. Love her to death but hate wondering if I have enough gas to get TO the gas station.....LOL

  • @judih.8754
    @judih.8754 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow, one problem after another! Thank goodness you are fastidious. Concerning the basting tool for removing fluid. I bought a couple recently, one for the shop and the other to replace my old kitchen one. They are inexpensive enough to get one for your garage!
    You mention the "crummy" seal vs the o-ring for the top of the canister. I can only surmise that a seal would have been used by the factory although the o-ring would be much stronger. I also noted the new filter didn't have that nice "handle" to facilitate removal like the old one did. Is Mahle cutting corners perhaps?
    Another great video! Thanks Ladies!!

    • @michaelmarino6808
      @michaelmarino6808 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was looking for that “handle” also. It is there, have a look at 16:25, when Franny flips the filter over. You can see it there. Just have to notice it when installing as it’s only on one end.

    Well that fuel leak made me feel physically sick, and the gearbox, let that situation go on and the whole thing turns to shredded metal in minutes if you forget to fill it. I'm not going to ask 'did the owner know', I'm sure they didn't, but my goodness.......Anyway, Heidi, Franny, have a lovely Christmas time! John UK.

    Franny, Since you couldn’t change the gear oil I was wondering why not just roll the back end of the car out of the garage and idle the engine in neutral until the motor oil was nice and warm. My mechanic is an ASE master mechanic and he doesn’t feel at all comfortable working on Porsches. How’d a nice girl like you ever learn wrench so well and glean all that knowledge about Porsches and Ferraris?

    Don't drive with these one-million-dollar cars on public roads. There are lately so many idiots driving around and insurance companies do not pay the collector's value of old cars that got smashed, but just the value of raw materials. In other words for a 50 years old totaled car, they give you 500 bucks, if at all.
