We sit down with Julie Gage, a 58-year-old, to explore her incredible journey of resilience and recovery from an unfortunately and misfortunate turn of events.
Julie shares pivotal moments leading up to the massive change that was about to happen in her life. From travelling the world, living independently and teaching in a school she adored for 25+ years. She thought she just had the flu. She decided to head home that afternoon, only to fall into a severe delirium over the next 10 days.
For ten days, she and no-one was unaware of her deteriorating condition until her best friend broke into her home to check on her. Julie was rushed to the hospital, diagnosed with septicemia, and given just ten hours to live. Miraculously, she pulled through and was told by the doctors you have inner strength that pulled you through.
Julie describes the journey of loosing her leg in her 50s, having to relearn to live her life and all the aspects she had taken for granted previously. She talks about the overwhelming support network that surrounded her during this difficult time. From friends, family, ex-parents to teachers and teaching assistants, she felt deeply loved and cared for. Despite feeling lost and grieving her old life, Julie found strength in herself and from those around her.
The septicemia was the first of many challenges Julie had to face and the first of many other devastating infections, blood clots to facing the possibility of losing her beloved home, her sanctuary.
Julie describes being uncoordinated in both her thoughts and movements. She reflects on the guilt of letting her children down and the uncertainty she felt with the constant hospital visits. However, Julie’s story is one of acceptance and embracing help and support. She emphasises the importance of having faith in yourself and the courage to overcome life’s challenges.
Julie now enjoys a good life, finding joy in simple pleasures like going to the cinema, listening to music (even if she falls asleep), and spending time in the park, listening to the birds and enjoying nature’s calmness. She’s determined to make the most of any situation, jumping on a bus and embracing life in all its forms. She has started travelling the world again too.
Tune in to hear Julie Gage’s inspiring story of perseverance, love, and making the most of life, no matter the circumstances.
