U dont need a pot holder. U configure the hook and it becomes a handle and u put a stick in the handle of the little pot. Dont need to cut or modify anything.
The 2 D rings on the handle are to put a locally made wooden stick! The hook affair on the back hooks into the loop and by positioning it, you create the pour handle! Adam Savage does a great video on it. If you don't already subscribe to him, you should get right on over there and join up. He's a good'n!
To over come the hot handles, is simple. If you notice the handles have D rings on them, insert a stick, long, short, just for your liking and Hot Handle problem solved with no need to cut or purchase anything. I've used this kit for years, danged well made and with practice you can cook a full course meal. My favorite! Also you can add the Swiss Fold A Cup to make it a total kit.
As casanoa typed, the two loops in the handle is for putting a wooden rod as a handle, and a tip is to use a 1 yard rod or longer and that way being able to keep the pan over a open fire, same goes for the big pot with the hook, make a simple tripod of 3 sticks and hang it over a open fire, thats how those parts are most commonly used for cooking, and as stated below, it is a soldiers cook set and yes the knife or bajonet is used as handle for it. it was never designed as a civilian stove
You can get either size for under fifteen bucks. The military version is easy to find for as little as eight bucks. But don't buy it. The mini Trangia is far and away the best stove because it's small enough to slip into a pocket. That's all it has going for it. The Trangia has been famous for a lot of years, but there are now several stoves on the market than are better in several ways.
i moded my wind screen..instead of cutting a small notch for a pot grabber..i cut it big enough for the handle of the pot to rest that way...that way the heat and fire rise up on the other side( the original way to set the pot)..and now my handle stays cool..i can boil water to a full rolling boil and be able to pick the pot up bare handed...
I'd just like to say, regarding the little mini pot with the handle - if the handle heats up, try using the D-Rings! Prop them up before the pot gets hot, and when you want to lift up the pot, slide a branch into the D-Rings, and pick it up using a branch! :D I hope you find this helpful, and may you enjoy many meals in your swedish army Trangia kit!
As for the handling of the pots: you can use a stick (as has been said above) thru the d rings on the handle in the smaller pot to make it not only less hot but sturdier o even longer inf you are yo use it on an open fire) ......As for the larger pot, you should place the big hook on the second notch in the handle and pass de lenght of it thru the slit on the front of the pot, which gives you a pretty solid 3-point support for pouring or handling without steam in you hands. Nice video, and enjoy your kit.
if you dont have a pot grabber by placing the large pan into the smaller one and holding the larger ones handle you can pour quiet easily without burning your hand. i also drilled a couple of holes in mine a little way up to raise the height of the pan to make putting sticks in a little easier when using it as a hobo stove
I have one of these stoves, and love it! However, instead of using a pot grabber just use it like it was designed. Those rings on the frying pan handle were designed specifically so a soldier could find just any old stick in the woods, whittle off a little bit of wood to fit into the rings, and you've got an instant, insulated handle that can easily be picked up with your bare hands. These are excellent kits for the money, and quite rugged & durable!
I use the small d rings on the frying pan and put a green stick through so the handle does not burn my hand. rather than use a potholder to tilt the main pot you can put the fryingpan on the bottom of main pot to make it easier to control where you are pouring.
I have the ally version ive had it around 10 years its never failed me or let me down never burnt myself with it , how ever I did remove the main handle on the main large pan and replaced it with a 3mm wire rope handle its soft flexable and you can still hang it above a fire if you need to . Great video tho thanks for sharing
It's not a swiss mess kit. The reason to why many think it is is because of that people mix up switzerland and sweden as countries, and that the 2 messkits are fairly similair. The swiss one looks more like the east german ones. Also, the accesories are all swedish made.
Crazy cheap nowdays u cant even find them i got my for 80 euros and the wind screen and burner and bottle for 18 euros wow what a bargin they used to be theres now a stainless steel repro made by pathfinder also in europe we got a Brand called mfh its like rothco in the us the mfh repro is the closesd one to original stainless steel but Costs 79 euros and has a stainless steel windshield and no burner included cant amagin how people got the Real Deal for less then 10 bucks
It is Swedish. Believe me, i used one of those for 12 months when i did my national service in the Swedish army. I used this kit in all kinds of extreme weather conditions and it always does the job. Hot food no matter what. This little tin can keeped my moral high, even when i was digging foxholes in minus 35 degrees celcius :D Very reliable kit.
I recently received a Stainless Steel kit of this type, apparently made in 1964 (almost as old as I am LOL) Mine needs a bit of work, some corrosion removal and mustiness due to long term storage. As soon as I get it up and running, I'm certain that I'll enjoy using it.
Use a stick in the D rings on the handle instead of the cutting into would be my choice. They are great setups, I had one a few years ago and lost it, bought one again recently, it is hard to beat a Trangia with mess kit. Good Review.
@MrSpy...The kit you are looking at is the stainless steel Swedish mess kit, and weighs 2.75 pounds with the burner and empty fuel bottle inside. To all those interested, I have this kit readily available with additional accessories specifically for this kit on eBay. Shipping right here from the good 'ol USA!!!
@525donuts I ended up buying an aluminum one from Ronnie Sunshines, but the windscreen is pretty beat up. I fixed it up and made new stands out of coat hangers, but I went and found new stainless ones at Militarymart and ordered one last night.
It was painted green but i stripped off the paint. Most all will come painted. Once the paint was off no additional polishing was done. However you could polish to a mirror finish if you wanted.
You can pour the main pot with easy trick. Put the hook in the second notch and put the hook half way through the loop at side of the main pot. Now you can pour it easy. Second thing, make your self handle stick that you put through the rings of the smaller pot and you don't need that pot handling device at all.
Actually you don't need the pot grip if you hook the hook-part of the handle in the loop of the pot. As long as you hold on to the carry handle where the two pieces connect (the hook part connects to the handle) you can pour just fine. The hook may need a tweak or two to fit snugly, but you'll be fine. Also I find that modern civilian Trangia stoves have more energy output than the mil.spec ones. When I was using one of these during my time in the army my civvie stove was a few minutes faster
It's the Swedish army mess kit. I used it several times duing military service. Americans always mix up sweden with switzerland... It' Swedish, not swiss put the hook in the "thingie" on the side and you won't need your griphandle, searsh swedish army mess kit on youtube and you´ll find what i mean
As for the heat on the pan handle, you will notice the two rings on the handle. These are to insert a length of a green stick into to act as a handle extension. The pot I have just used a heavy dry rag or gloves.
ditch the SVEA burner and get a regular Trangia burner, its smaller but much more efficient, more heat for less fuel use and more controllable too.I love my Swedish army cookset,a really well designed bit of kit.
The Trangia is a good stove, but has the worst simmer ring of any alcohol stove on the planet. This mean it isn't very controllable. There are several stones now on the market that are better than the Trangia. in several ways.
These have come back into style because the way food for camping has changed. Food preparation use to be cook fresh food. For that you need different types of pots. Fry pans, larger pots and the like. With freeze dried foods and MREs you just need a slender tall pot to boil water. Place the water in the pot and the MRE and simmer. When done just cut open and eat. Remember these are for our troops no matter which country they serve for their uses. We're just adapting them for our uses. PS. The mess kit is only swiss unless the 3 crowns are stamped into it.
Great vid but it's Swedish from Sweden. Not Swiss from Switzerland Big difference. Awesome cook kit actually the best out there in stainless. Give credit where credit is due
here's a quick tip about the mess kit. If you want to keep the handle from heating up, you just fold it up when you're not using it. And also, the small pot has 2 D-rings on the handle that you can fold up before putting it on the stove and put a small stick in so you can put it over an open fire as well.
if you examine the kit closer, you should see the 3-crown emblem indicative of the swedish coat of arms. Each item should have that emblem in the kit. Also, just taking off a glove would serve as a make-shift pot holder~
Switzerland issued another mess kit for it's soldiers. This one you are reviewing was issued during the Cold War to conscript soldiers in Sweden's defence force. This Swedish mess kit was manufactured by the Swedish Trangia company.
Thanks for a very nice video, just one comment for the "protocol", this mess kit is swedish! It gives me some flashbacks, I used it when I did my military service. We called it for the "Dirt Can" :-) Keep up the good work!
I have a steel version too. It's a great kit and bullet proof, but boy does it get heavy carrying it around. I use mine when I want to be bushcrafty and hardcore. The rest of the time I stick to my gas stove set up.
Bennett It’s not informative at all, basically, ignore everything he said, he knows nothing about it what so ever, please find a different video from somebody that knows what they are talking about. Do NOT cut a slot for a pan grip, the rings on the handle are for a stick or bayonet to extend the handle. Cannot emphasise enough, this guy is clueless!
Ebay is about the only place to get a Stainless Steel one that I know of. Some times they will be called Swiss(erroneously, but that was how mine was called when I bought it years ago off of Ebay) so search for both. There is one for sale now on Ebay(11-11-12) for around 45.00US Good luck!
If you go to ebay you'll see the same kit called both things. So if someone was looking for one they could search for it both ways. I'm no geology expert, but I do know a bit about GEOGRAPHY and I am aware that they are two different countries. I do know a bit about spelling and the # 2 is spelled two =0)
Swedish not swiss... tre crowns are ours because we stole it from the czh. Another thing. If you know how to use that kitchen your plyer is not necessary. The little kitchen is very useful.
my basement is damp, every aluminum pot I used to own had holes in them, water will corode aluminum, so unless you keep them absolutely dry, they will not last for years
It's Swedish not Swiss and you don't have to worry about the handles getting hot because it's designed for you to jam a stick in those two stainless steel rings on the handle to give you a longer handle If you put that c wire clip in the slot in the bracket on the side of the pot you can easily poor with great stability
You don't need a pot holder - just put a stick thru the rings on the handle, that's what they are for! Btw, you're missing the little foldable can opener that includes the kit. Regards / JA37SWE
not trying to be an hater but you wouldn't need the pot grabber and short of going through ur comments to see if any one else has pointed this out and not knowing if you know but the o rings on the pot handle can be opened up and a twig or small branch slid it creating an handle... But top video im currently awaiting deliver of a 3 piece version of the Swedish mess kit the windbreaker/pot stand the burner the main deep pot and 2 smaller ones
@525donuts Unlike the aluminum, the stainless steel will not lead to dementia from the aluminum leeching into your food over time. That is the reason why nobody sells aluminum pots anymore in America.
U dont need a pot holder. U configure the hook and it becomes a handle and u put a stick in the handle of the little pot. Dont need to cut or modify anything.

It Alwaysmanaged to make me a hot meal during my time in the Swedish army.
Love it and kept it when I left the service!

Yes, it's definitely a swedish mess kit. The swiss one is a little different, and only made out of aluminium (no stainless steel option).
There are some at my army surplus store here in Oklahoma. They cost about 4 to 8 dollars, depending on if you get it in aluminum or stainless.

Great stove I have used mine since 2002
I have a steel version too. It's a great kit and bullet proof, but boy does it get heavy carrying it around. I use mine when I want to be bushcrafty and hardcore. The rest of the time I stick to my gas stove set up.
Yeah I've done that before, still a bit tippy, but works pretty good. Thx
Great video, very informative and well done

@DarthCelcius german mess kits are kidney shaped as well
the 2 rings on the haddle is so u can insert
a stick
@MikaelHeed In English , I reckon it'd be called the 'Grot Pot ' .
Hey follow through on doing a video using it to cook or if you want to be even more adventurous to bake!
@jntroisi ebay is about the only place that I could find them. sometimes you can find one at a surplus shop but you have to be really lucky
U need ta get the green cup and use a U.S. Military 200 round pouch. It fits perfect
how heavy is yours i ordered mine off ebay and its coming from the other side of the country and i want to know how heavy it is
If you go to ebay you'll see the same kit called both things. So if someone was looking for one they could search for it both ways. I'm no geology expert, but I do know a bit about GEOGRAPHY and I am aware that they are two different countries. I do know a bit about spelling and the # 2 is spelled two =0)
ise the "D" rings on the handle to insert a stick, instant pot handle, and you didn't have to carry extra stuff ( weight).
brilliant mess kit. i have one too
Dude did u strip all the paint off of the mess kit? Looks really cool
Swedish not swiss... tre crowns are ours because we stole it from the czh. Another thing. If you know how to use that kitchen your plyer is not necessary. The little kitchen is very useful.
Is there any place, besides ebay, in North America that sell these?
my basement is damp, every aluminum pot I used to own had holes in them, water will corode aluminum, so unless you keep them absolutely dry, they will not last for years
i have one too. briliant.
I bought one 4 months ago, but thank you any way.
Got a few of these they are heavy but solid
Advise on where to order?
What kind of stove is that
Seems like it's a little big to pack around in an already full pack.
Were can I get one
thanks for all the comments and tips
the hook clips in the front for pouring out m8
Which grooves? :)
It's Swedish not Swiss and you don't have to worry about the handles getting hot because it's designed for you to jam a stick in those two stainless steel rings on the handle to give you a longer handle
If you put that c wire clip in the slot in the bracket on the side of the pot you can easily poor with great stability
@Tengan65 i think "Filth can" is more correct translation =)
they use these in the norwegian army
Tony, you do know that the "hook" is to lock the bail at 180º from the pot don't you?
the aluminium version will last years and has the advantage of lightness and heating up quicker
Where i can buy? I'm italian..
Sometimes you can find them in military surplus stores online or on eBay. The stainless steel ones can be a little hard to find. Good luck
@@EveryBladeOfGrass1
I understand .. :-( thank you..
Your model is very very very PERFECT.
Congratulations, dude.. :-)
This kitchen is a Swedish army trangia kitchen, not a Swiss. It has been manufactured since the 1940's in Sweden under the name "kokkärl m/40".
You don't need a pot holder - just put a stick thru the rings on the handle, that's what they are for! Btw, you're missing the little foldable can opener that includes the kit.

not trying to be an hater but you wouldn't need the pot grabber and short of going through ur comments to see if any one else has pointed this out and not knowing if you know but the o rings on the pot handle can be opened up and a twig or small branch slid it creating an handle... But top video im currently awaiting deliver of a 3 piece version of the Swedish mess kit the windbreaker/pot stand the burner the main deep pot and 2 smaller ones
the stainless kits are getting hard to find.
I think I used Jasco Paint stripper
5 starz mate. Thanks for the video.
u love that pot graber
Aluminum pots and pans are SAFE to cook with. tin and Aluminum cans are not as safe cause SOME are lined with BPA plastic that when heated is TOXIC
Swedish/Swiss? so is it Swiss or is it Swedish?
Just put a twig trough the loops on the frying pan!
@525donuts Unlike the aluminum, the stainless steel will not lead to dementia from the aluminum leeching into your food over time. That is the reason why nobody sells aluminum pots anymore in America.
Not Swiss. The burner is a SVEA not a Trangia, And why not use the bail and handle as intended.
yep they get hot thay why I carry a pair of thin work gloves! like rigging gloves in my pack! no hot fingers...
Основательная вещь...на ,века,....
m40 kit. 3 diffrent types. made of aluminium stainless steel and brass. i do own all these 3. /// Swedish historian.
Not made by victorinox
Won’t charge your iPhone
Not ultralight
But does what it was designed for
Still amazing ;-)
You know that Sweden and Switzerland are two different places.
Yep, that's Swedish
i have one
its a nice looking kit but i prefare my british army crusader kit
Or you grab a stick and poke it through the hoops.
And... you might want to avoid storing the alcohol and stove inside the thing :)
Yes, this is swedish.
simular to ww2 german army mess kit
