@@jpguidry6969 It has pros and cons. You'll get anything cooked that is kinda like stew, soups, water etc. It doesn't work as a pan too good, because the bottom surface is pretty narrow. But the shape and versatility is really good for that low price. Cheers, Marc
You can also put cans and other food items inside so you don't have to travel with it empty. If you have Esbit heat tablets and cooker, keep it separate from the mess kit.To keep the cans or food from rattling inside stuff in a couple of dish rags or handkerchiefs. They help clean up afterward for a quick wipe or wash.
military mess kits main purpose is to provide each soldier with a plate/bowl, cup, and flat ware for the occasions they get to have A or B rations (hot chow). issuing a mess kit to each soldier relieves the field kitchen from having to haul around a lot of table ware.
The West German version handle is also special as it can be tilted to the side for easy holding over a stove or the handle can be clicked into staying straight up. If you have to lower the big pot into a well (with a long cord) the pot will tip over to gather the water, but stay up on the way up, the handle having a notch in the middle, a marvelous design!
I, too, have a huge soft spot for military mess kits, starting with the Swedish.I just added the Swiss Army Mess Kit MZ 1935 as well as the Swiss volcano stove type of canteen kit. I love modern mess/canteen kits like the ones offered by Dave Canterbury, too. Keep the videos coming. You have such a pleasant jovial demeanor. Greetings from Pittsburgh! ~Laura
Like all military mess kits, these are meant to use in a mess line. The Europeans served lots of soup and stews. Here, the pot is for soup. The larger cup/pan holds bread, and the smaller one coffee or tea. The difference here is that this is more useful in a camp situation than U.S. or British kits. Swedish, Italian, and Soviet bloc kits were all similar. Oh yeah, the larger cup is best used as a double boiler, although the pot itself is big enough to get your hand inside for easy cleaning. If you wish to heat up cans via the boiler method, be sure all of the glue is removed from the cans first. Military ration cans used vegetable based paint to label contents for a reason. No glue! Now just figure out how to open and hold onto an incredibly hot lump of metal while you eat. Y'all have a GOODN.
Mine has FR19 all over all 3 components. I have two. I one with strap. And one without. The one without strap, I use all the time. The one with the strap, I have never used. I bought thank at a surplus store in 06. Been dragging them around for years. Love my German army canteen. Plastic will a hard cover on it.
TheOutdoorGearReview Picked one up from Swiss Link after your video. It's neat - seems brand new - don't know if it's historic just not distributed before or if it's just new. Still, it's definitely a cool piece and is a bit smaller than other kits I have so that's a bonus.
Same as the Asutrian Version... used this a lot... Good piece of Equipment. Very durable and you can store some stuff (small Esbit stove, sporke or whatever and even food) in it. Also you can even cook in it (works well, hat to do this a lot of times :D) For private use I personally prefer US Army Style Mess Kit cause they are more flat but... this one is still a very good Mess kit! Some people may worry (or actually are worried, I met some during my last maneuver in November...) about cooking and eating from something made of aluminium; but i think if you don't eat all your meals over a very long tome out of this thing it won't harm you...
Luke, do you know if this mess kit will NEST inside the Swedish mess kit windshield (the one that is used with their Trangia or Svea Alcohol stoves)??? Thanks
Rob Marley I completely understand about military gear. Some like it, some don't. I like using it but rarely like carrying it. In most cases just too heavy. Cool indeed, bombproof but heavy. Cheers. - Luke
I ask myself if this a preview or review. Maybe an introduction. How it fits together and how or what the the different parts do together. I have watched many of your videos and I didn't see your normal informative presentation. Sorry but I hope you take this as a review of how I felt after watching it. I am familiar with this mess kit so I know how the parts can join with the handle to hold them together if you are going through a chow line. I did not see these neat features in your PREVIEW. I do enjoy your reviews.
Actually there are more versions than that. German, Austrian, Swiss, Polish, Hungarian and Russian. All about the same except that the Polish one has a little taller frying pan and they are all two piece sets except the German one. German is three piece. Love your vids!
Have to remember , its designed for the military . The ability to carry two pans at once , was for use in a chow line , at a field kitchen . We did the same thing , for the same reson . Stand in line , your big pot , either gets a ladel of soup or stew , the other two , a lump of bread , and some potatoes , or veggie ........later in the war , when things were going badly , you only carried up the big pot , and gor what was scavenged ........if you got anything other than a lump of bread .
You should not heat it over fire. It is MESS kit- not cooking kit. It is pained aluminum. Paint will burn right away and will look ugly also it will smell.
Luke there is no where on your web site to make suggestions about your request of "buggin out over night ".. so we are writing to your facebook account,,,,, Ron W. The polishpicl.
Hey luke k know you and your wife like to camp and hike and I remembered in a past video you said jokingly that you super power is that you can stand up and pee. Well there is a product called gogirl it lets women go standing up. You should check it out. BTW LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! !!!!!!!
Tommie Mullins Hey there Tommie, I have a friend who used one of those stand up and pee things and said it was horrible! Made a huge mess from their experience. Cheers, - Luke
The M31 is an old working horse over here in Germany, we used them as boy scouts a lot and the design is really cool. Cheers, Marc
Hey man, can you fry in it? I mean luncheon meat for example.
@@vitezslavsoudil6814 I tried, it works, but you won't get much done that way, as the frying surface is rather small. Regardless, it's still possible.
Is it that good please respond👍

Nice Review my friend, the Austrian Army Mess Tin is the same style... i have used it a lot...
thanks for sharing with us Harry

I have the East German version in my BOB's. I like them a lot. Great for camping and cooking right on the fire.
Ken Varney Thanks for sharing Ken.
All the best.

You have been making videos for ever!!! Thanks much for everything you do . Blessings to you and your family 😇 🇺🇸

It is an Austrian Army Mess kit. It’s quite similar to Bundeswehr, but it have two differents. The pot and tin at German Mess kit are higher.
Almost the same as my East German Mess Kit. Like you said, "Sweet!"
I cannot be the only one who loves the music you use when doing the intro shots. Seriously Luke please just mention/name it down in the description.
Mine is stamped with FR-19. I have had it for 12 years now.
also the ussr made a similar version of this mess kit and it goes for a little bit cheaper
Some guy in another video measured and found the Russian ones were made from thicker aluminium than the german ones so they are a little stronger too.

Yes, a nice mess kit; I found the East German version on the 'bay for well under $20 shipped, which was lucky.
Great review mate! : ) I've got one of these myself, its an awesome bit of kit! All the best mate, Jay
GoonieBushcraft Take care of yourself Jay.

Thanks for the review. Your always looking at the options.
MrOldclunker You got that right!

What kind of gloves of those? just wool gloves?

I have one very similar, but the handle mounts differently and has a marking on the strap.
hehehe Its not German M 31 mess kit .Its post war Bundeswehr mess Kit . The German Bundeswehr still use It today :)
correct we had the same one in the 90ties (luftwaffe)
I have a 1941 mess kit and a 1988 mess kit, the differences are pretty huge!
Never stored food in metal containers before
Do these seal up good?
It often rains In my country
Luke, do you know if this mess kit will NEST inside the Swedish mess kit windshield (the one that is used with their Trangia or Svea Alcohol stoves)??? Thanks
Neat little cook set. Military gear isn't really for me, but it sure is cool to see and probably fun to use and collect.

Swiss Link burnt down during the Paradise Ca fire but is open again. Help them out getting back in business by visiting their site.
I have a east german kit and love it. thanks for the review man, well done . I have me using these in some of my vids.
Kullcraven Bushcraft Sounds good Kullcraven!
- Luke
You should try the Swedish version. Similar but with a burner and windscreen :) named kokkärl m/40 but nicknamed "snuskburken" (filthy can)
Leif Bäckman Lindqvist I will look into Leif.
Thank you.
- Luke
i have one, since a few years now, and its still perfect. you can get them for about 5$ here in germany in surplus-stores :D
The East German version is a bit lighter in weight... thinner metal guage. But it works.

Could you make a review of a german Bundeswehr eating cutlery set? (4-piece, stainless steel) Awesome utensils, definitely worth to be described.
supersonic I will see what I can do.

How would the paint be affected over flames ?
I have one, the Paint stays fine, but sot builds up
Nice looking mess kit. Versatile, good size and light weight. Thanks for sharing. atb
Opal Preston Shirley Sure thing Opal!

If you leave that extra cup away, then it's same as Finnish army version
what is the volume of the main pot?
I look forward every week to your wed. Show. Really enjoy seeing what you come up with. Thanks for sharing. God bless and stay safe.

They're all tin or aluminum.
Uuuugh.

I wish it were steel and not aluminum. Grear video!
Wow 1 lb 2 oz what do you got in that damn thing I got the same mess kitten it weighs around 10 oz for the same mess kit
Love it. Good review
It's a shame how much surplus gear has gone up in price. I can't mind the last time I got a bargain in a surplus outlet. Great channel though 👌🏼
Why are some of the fingers of your gloves missing?
TO PICK HIS NOSE OBVIOUSLY.
I'm eating popcorn out of the big pot while watching this
The police version was used by almost all non military government agencies. The only difference is that it’s grey instead of green
You should not heat it over fire. It is MESS kit- not cooking kit. It is pained aluminum. Paint will burn right away and will look ugly also it will smell.
You can put those over a fire?
Rashad Nagi yes I've used one for years like that
do they make them in stainless steel? I plan on boiling water with this
Not that I know of and you can boil water in these.
S&H

TheOutdoorGearReview thanks
The Swedish m40 mess kit comes in stainless steel (and aluminium), but it is very sought after and expensive.
This is not the original one..... this is the version of bundeswher version not the ww2 version
This is Not a M31 Wehrmacht one, Its a Bundeswehr Version
With the little empty space in the pot you could put spices and some hot sauce
- Cole
BigBadBanshee13 That is a great point BigBad.- Luke
if you can find them .
I wish i could find a stainless steel version.
Its not m31.. its post war german mess kit, but great review!

I got a very similar copy off amazon. I like it.
Doesn't have a handle for the lid, but I picked up a little clamp on one.
