Doing watercolor for 20 + years on Indian handmade papers and here is my review ( hope this helps all aspiring painters who rush for better equipment rather perfecting their drawing) - In 90s so many foreign brands were not available and only Indian brands were available. 1-2 rs paper where available where we started watercolor and 8-9-10 rs handmade paper were luxury. I am from Kolkata many local handmade pure cotton paper was available and from students to artist all used this paper. Canson Arches n St Curtbert mill paper were available but was for rich painters. I bet all great watercolor painters who are in 40s-50s now would agree with me. When I first tried chitrapat i immediately came to conclusion it is poor man's arches. I am saying this after doing water in 2 rs paper to 900-1000 rs Garza papel paper. I buy 25 30 papers at a time. And just splash colors on them, doing all kinds of experiments with watercolor on them without breaking the bank. All painters now should feel lucky that good paper like chitrapat is now available in India. So learn the art of painting. Papers and others are secondary. A good painters adapt and doesn't complain.

I have been using Chitrapat paper for quite some time. I was interested in knowing what your views were about this paper. I am glad that you have given a positive report. I love using the 440gsm paper. The texture in the 270gsm block is slightly different. I am glad that such a lovely handmade paper is available in India. Thanks for your review, and I love the clarity of your pronunciation.

So i learned to watercolor on the Chitrapat paper as it was locally available and as it is made in a town about an hour and half away from mumbai. I learned on the the roughest, thickest 400gsm one, switching to other papers i literally had to relearn a lot of things,as the Chitrapat paper used to hold water well and i was quite heavy handed with water using it and with this paper come its own techniques of moving water around.I dont use the paper anymore though as i feel the paper sometimes can take away the transparency, opacity of a painting giving it a gouche like feel than watercolor. For what this paper costs per sheet, saunders waterford cp costs the same and is way more versatile and retains transparency and the watercoloriness of the painting. The 270gsm is more suited than 420gsm one for watercolor i feel.
This paper though is able to bring out the vibrancy from even the cheapest paint.

FYI, the matt surface of chitrapat is designed for acrylic paintings. It works that way only. Many artists have a tendency to misunderstand the matt chitrapat with the cold press in other brands. Hope this helps.

I find it fascinating that Chitrapat watercolor paper actually quite easily available here in Nepal as long as you go to good art supply stores and on Daraz. I have found sizes ranging from postcard size to half sheet in 300 and 450 gsm, but haven't yet found 270 gsm yet or in matte texture. Seeing as it's an Indian brand, I had assumed that it would be far easier to find in even larger range of size and weight.

Hahahahahaha "....I googled and reached a dead end..." LOL I too faced the same dilemma when I decided to buy Chitrapat paper. I love both rough and mat texture. 270 and 440 gsm. I use the mat 440gsm for wet on wet watercolour painting. Love this brand. Thank you for the review. I have ordered my master's brush cleaner... it is going to be delivered today. Can't wait to use it. Thank you for the video on that.

Wow, finally, a much relevant video. I went ahead and bought the Matt paper a couple of months back and had regretted initially. The texture was too pronounced and the regular pattern forced my strokes to align with its flow. After painting around for a bit I managed to subdue the paper. Still, as you have mentioned, since the paper texture is too pronounced, anything below A4 is a chore. But, bold, confident strokes makes the paper work our way. Also, the rough texture too is not a favourite of mine. I prefer cold pressed or hot pressed and for that, there exists another Indian brand called Maestriaa. Do check them out, they are quite good, though their paper sizes are not standard. Also, Matt texture of chitrapat is something new and different. It gives a canvas vibe. It would be excellent for acrylics. Another drawback that I felt for the Matt paper was that while using the granulating paints, the particles align in symmetry.
Finally, this paper can take a beating. I have done all sorts of things with it. Multiple washes>3 and even stretched it, which brings to light another advantage. If you stretch this paper, it will remain the flattest object in the world even if you pour water on it.
BTW, great video and content as always. Do keep on promoting or making people aware of such quality Indian brands. Thank you very much. I wish this video was released a few months earlier.

Thanks for this comment. I've also bought chitrapat matt paper recently. I did a loose kind off landscape on it first. It went so so. Then I tried a portrait and honestly speaking I could not control my stokes on it. And I'm now confused if I wasted my bucks on it. But reading your comments now cooled me a bit. I'll definitely try doing landscapes on it and see how it goes. Thanks anyway.

Very relevant and useful video. I would like you to review the impact of masking fluid on both the papers as most waterclour artists uses it for their paintings. I would like to see if the different texture has any impact while removing the masking fluid. Thanks.

Hi...Finally a review between rough and Matt texture Chitrapat papers..Thank you...I use 270 gsm and just got 440 gsm...I love making my sketch books and 270 gsm doesn't allow both sides and multiple washes..Love 270 GsM for pen and ink ..one side is rough and other is smooth...it keeps my sketch book interesting as I can alternate between rough and smooth sides..Now, I am plunging into 440gsm to really wet both sides of the paper...
    Love the review.. 😍
