07-20-12 Changed the rear tire on my 2008 Yamaha V Star today. Not too bad of a job. Use the video at your own risk. I am not a motorcycle mechanic and my way may not be the right way.

Great video! The only thing I would add is greasing the drive shaft spines, if you hadn't done that already. I bought a low milage Vstar 650. I noticed that the tires had been changed but I wanted to make certain that those splines were greased. On those Vstars I have heard that if the splines get dry and fail, that rear differential replacement will have a starting price is at least 1000.$. I think my bike was probably OK, but for piece of mind I greased the splines anyway.

How do you position the jack to lift the rear wheel? I have a similar jack which seems to lift the front only. I see no place on the rear side to mount the jack. Thanks.
I have the jack positioned almost touching the rear wheel. It will start lifting the back tire off, and when it comes time to remove the tire, I jacked it up enough to get the tire out from underneath the fender. It can get a little tippy when it is jacked up that high.
just to give the people viewing. Use large zip ties about every 5 inches apart, around the tire. This will make the tire width smaller and it makes it easier to remove.
I just bought a vstar used, I’m used to riding bikes but this one seems suuuuper difficult to roll in neutral. Is this normal? I was watching this video becuase I might take my wheels off to see if something is off.

I have the EXACT same bike as you (even red). I have the bridgestone tires. It looks like you have another kind. How many miles do you usually go before changing. Seems like I am averaging about 10k before back needs changed (front seems to last like 30k) and I am also changing the rear pads every time as well.
Hi Brian, I am using OEM Dunlop tires. I only get about 8000 miles on the rear tire but I really like them because they seem to stick to the road really well. The front tire I usually end up changing because of weather checking on the side wall. I have changed the front brake pads once and still have the original rear brake pads. I have around 29500 on the odometer. I am on my 3rd battery with the present battery on its second year. This has been a trouble free bike. I usually go 2000 to 2500 miles on an oil and filter change. My theory has always been, oil is cheap, engine rebuilds are expensive.
My Vstar 650 ie leaking oil from the final drive and I think its just a 9 dollar oil seal, I am worried about messing something up and it not going back together right. How easy was it to get the drive shaft to slide back into gearbox
I am having problems seating the rear hub back on the tire. When I took it off it was pretty tight up against the rim. Now it doesn't want to go back all the way in. Stays about 1/8" out. Not sure if this will be an issue or not.
I realize people use tubeless tires without tubes. I never install my new ties without tubes and use tubes for use on gravel roads they are quite heavy rubber. . even if the tires are tubeless I still use tubes Use only tubes with metal stems . if you are in no mans land you will thank yourself as you try to help other riders with deflated tires you meet on the roads.... a few extra dollars can give peace of mind.
+james dean I just bought a jack from OTC. It fits nicely under my bike. it is a lower profile. It also helps if you can have a helper stand your bike up as you put the jack underneath.
Believe it or not they still sell these things at Walmart. They are perfect for working in the garage, low profile, non-conductive, and if you scratch the face up you throw it away and get a new one. To tell you he truth though, I have never been a trend setter in the fashion world.

Update : the brake pads were rusted/calipers nearly seized. Original owner only put 200 miles on it in 12 years 😂

What is the proper orientation of the rear axle end cap? Punch mark on top or on bottom.

They are the stock 2008 Silverado rims. They are tubeless.

My tires are tubeless. I do not know why you have tubes in yours.
