You can do this without taking off the seat and fender bolts. You need to lift the bike up about a foot using a good Jack. I like to remove the clamp that secures the rear brake hose too. It’s an 8 mm bolt . That gives you more flexibility on the rear caliper and I use a bungee cord to secure the caliper
You don't have to remove the seat or fender.. plus David Sherman is right, just take the whole diff in one pull, don't split it.. twas not necessary.. but we all live and learn if we try, so good try.. just did wayy more than need be.. good luck and ride safe.. least you learned something :)
You can also get 2 buddies to help out if you don't have a cruiser stand. 1. to hold the bike while you jack it past the rear fender clearance and 2. to pull the rear tire out when it's all clear. I have a digital copy of the repair manual if you want it JerryRigEverything
Thanks! I actually sold that bike. I'm riding a Ducati Monster S2R nowadays. I had to buy a rear stand for that one. No jerryrigging a stand outta cinder blocks anymore.
So, how does the final drive just "pop" right out? Mine definitely doesn't want to pop...I have the shaft, stuck to that, and that, stuck to the tire, but all off the bike. Almost there!
@2:17 was silly unnecessary all you have to do is remove the 4 bolts holding the final drive to the frame, no need to split it in half and remove only one half, getting to those back 2 acorn nuts must've been a bitch because you're supposed to remove that drive housing completely to disassemble it.

I'm trying to find a video for changing the rear brake rotor on my V Star....Do I have to remove rear wheel or, is there a way without removing the wheel? From what I see in this video, It looks like I might have to.
I just want to say hey the guy made a video trying to help people see how the tire comes off everyone has variations of how they do things and I don't know this guy at all but all your rude remarks are just a waste and find something better to do with your lives. Cant stand disrespectful assholes especially when someone was just doing something to try to help! and yeah i know im late on commenting.

Has anyone encountered any problems with extreme wear on the splined sleeve that links the drive shaft with the rear differential? Any unusual wear on the shaft splines. Mine were rounded off quite a bit. Very expensive to replace. I did all the work myself.
8/09/14...MC mechanics ...I'm in my Cave trying to remove the rear axle nut on my Honda Shadow. I done put 24" of cheat on it and it won't break...What do I do next? It's 90 deg F and I'm sweatin' . If I rosebud heat it I'm sure I'm gonna screw something up.

Leaky shafts are the worst... Hmm... I honestly am not sure what might be wrong with that. Is there any type of gasket or seal around that part? It might just need replacing.

How do you change the transfer case oil? I have 2005 vstar 1100 and the manual shows a cover that I don't have on my bike.

Yep. Use ONLY 60% moly paste for spline lube. Regular grease, including low volume moly doesn't come close to protecting splines from brutal stresses.
