  • Hello all
    Over the last few days I have taken on the challenge of changing the front and rear tires on the Vstar. The stock tires have given up the ghost at approx 6800 miles, and a set of Commander 2s will be taking their place. I have been really limited on time, but in the little spare time, that I do have. I have been getting the bike ready for the upcoming Myrtle Beach NC trip I will be doing in May.

    lol... That's cool. Got to get my covid vaccine from the VA soon for protection next week. All is good here... All the best to you and the family.

    You are a smart guy to do this on your own. Seems like a lot of work. Good job! Ride Safe

      Hehe, thank you , but you don't have to be smart to do this.. A little intuitive, patience... And work slow.. I also read a lot of directions in the FSM, and search TH-cam for helpful videos. The combination is a great help. The rear was a struggle, but I got it done, now to align the rear end.

    Yo bro... Looks like you lost 4 years worth of comments...no problem. That happens to everybody now and then. Just glad to hear from you and hope all is going well with you and the family. All the best....

    Great job wrestling with those tires. Wow... you have all the tools necessary including the air compressor which helps tremendously to get the job done right. The vstar should ride like new. I guess when my "baby" needs a new pair of shoes, I'll have to dig deep into the pockets to have the dealer do it. Great job. RSMF

      Thanks for watching . It was a struggle, but I feel mostly cause my technique was a little rusty ... Hey going to a dealer you trust is never a bad thing , just as long as you trust them .. That's number 1.

    +Robert H Weinstein It's the Harbor freight Jack ...
    For lifting the front I place the back single stand of the Jack on the front frame of the bike ..
    As indicated in the manual. For lifting the rear . I place the outer portion of the Jack base on the flat rear portion behind the motor.. You will get a closer look of the rear lift point in my rear tire change video .
    Thank you for watching..

      +Ridin' With Drew Just be mindful, 1 you need a secure method of supporting the bike. 2 you need aa Field Service Manual for your bike for torque settings. 3 You need to have a method to realign that back video . 4. lots of patience, soapy water, maybe another set of hands ..lol.. 5. Watch some youtube videos on removing tires..
      thanks for watching.

    Wow, great job dbest. I LOL'd when I saw your home made tire bead breaker, hey necessity is the mother of invention! How much coin do you figure you saved doing them yourself? When can I come over with mine? : )) I'll be pulling my wheels off and taking them to an indy when it's time for new rubber next year. I don't have the patience to do the whole shebang myself.

    • @dbest1aVlogs
      @dbest1aVlogs  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Gfish that's a good question . I think with tires on the bike minimum 300 dollars. That's minimum .. If I brought the tires to Moroneys maybe they would have charged me at least a half hour labor .. It's actually easier to change the tire on a warmer day when the rubber is warmer. Just with the NC ride coming along in May I needed to get them on . Doesn't help our weather sucks. That bead breaker is something I saw on TH-cam. Works pretty good, but I have been thinking at minimum I will get a bead breaker from HF. Hopefully we can meet up n ride sometime this summer ..

    What are the tool sizes? And you sit in front of the camera people can't see

    You put it Backwards... those channels are supposed to go outward so pushes the water to the sides (in case of wet road), instead they are going to gather water into the center.

    • @dbest1aVlogs
      @dbest1aVlogs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. But but they were on Correct. There is an arrow on the rim, and an arrow on the tire directing which way to mount the tire.

      @@dbest1aVlogs Weird, those V shaped engravings should always point down if viewed from the front, and it looks you put them looking like Λ

      @@TerryGrancho Yeah, I never thought about that till u mentioned it, but they have worked fine. Gripped amazingly too. They were also very good sifting water out of the way of the rear in a few rain storms too. I have a shinko 777 up front now.

      It can be , it's been a while since I swapped a tire. Also the chilly temps didn't help .. Thanks for watching , I tried to keep it as short as I could.

      +dbest1a Vlogs the racket strap sure helps. My friend started to used dynabeads in his tires so he never has to balance them. Ride safe bro.

      +vac0002 I used some similar beads, but they are airsoft beads .. The ratchet strap is a great trick, just have to be careful when letting it go .. Lol. I will upload the rear end video in a day or so .. How is the weather by you ?

    Nice job, boy that was a lot of work!! But you can appreciate the finish job, and the tire looks great. I see you went with the Michelin tires are those the commanders??

      Yes Commander 2s .. The rear was a bear To get on, but my son helped me .. The front wasn't so bad. My technique was rusty so I was doing A few things off a bit. took a while To remember certain little tricks.

    OK all you did here with this video is confirm I do not want to try this. Way too much work. Why did you change the tires? They looked good to me. The tires you installed are better I see though. What about balancing?

    • @dbest1aVlogs
      @dbest1aVlogs  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a video I have to work on for the rear , the rear was shot .. Showing 0 on my tire gauge. The front showed approx 1mm .. Have a long trip coming up early next month, and figured I would get them changed while I had the time. Bike handles and runs great now. For balancing, I used balance beads. All in all it worked out pretty good. I don't mind the extra effort in the work, as I get to eye some other areas of the bike, and clean up some of the hidden areas .. I will admit, it was hard work, but payed off big time.

    • @theprimeaddiction7637

      Interesting choice to go with balance beads. I had a Goldwing Trike and nothing balanced the rear tires until I tried balance beads. The tires you chose are the same ones I have picked out for my bike. I have almost 10,000 on my stock tires. I might just change em both when I need a new rear. I am getting real close. I had also considered going Darkside tire for the rear. Some people love em.

    • @dbest1aVlogs
      @dbest1aVlogs  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually researched the Darkside a lot. I wanted to go with that route, but I like to corner a lot . I see twisty stuff, and get excited lol. Now not to say a DS tire can't handle it, but for the straight up riding it would be a great option. If you intend to do no hard cornering then the DS is awesome. The positives outweigh the negatives.
      The MC2s, are nice, I am still breaking them in. Even while new I have carved a bit on them, not hard, and they hold beautifully . I am happy with them so far. Mileage for the vstar is usually about 20k or so for the rear, little less for the front.

      I tried that. Didn’t like it. I actually have a tire mounter now though. Just have to set it up n mount on bench then fill it. That n some bead goo. Oh yea.
      I bought some bread paste of Amazon that works amazing. Just need to get the tire warm. Paste up the beads n work the tire off with the spoons. The commander is a tougher tire, so I use the heat gun to warm up the new one on low. Then skip it on. I’ll set the tire on rim outside in sun to warm up on a hot day, bring inside n leave by boiler on cold day. Below 50 degrees I won’t try unless I can warm the carcass enough.

      @@dbest1aVlogs Saw a guy put several strong zip ties on a tire so it squeezed the beads together like a clamshell. Lubed it up and popped both beads on the rim at the same time. I was amazed, but haven't tried it yet.
