- Full television coverage of the Indycar Caesars Palace Grand Prix. Filmed on the 8th October 1983 @ Caesars Palace, Las Vegas.
This was the year that they shortened the track into a make-shift weird-shaped oval. The track provided an awesome race! Unfortunately it was discontinued after this event.
WOW! Different era for sure! 70,000 for the win doesn't seem like much today but guess in those days 1983 that was a lot of money. I was 13 when that race happened.
You’d be surprised, the current indycar team payouts for races that aren’t the indy 500 the “winner’s circle fund” are pretty pathetic.
Actually, CART raced here for one more year (1984), then stopped coming here.
A more hyper focused individual never lived than an enraged Mario Andretti after he made a ultra rare driving error! This race was a prime example of that fact 💪 I was baffled in the beginning of John Paul jr's career as too why one of the big teams didn't snatch up this very talented driver. Then came the whisper's of the drug stuff swirling around him. After the stories came he refused to testify, wouldn't RAT out folks, well I became a solid fan of that Man. His very serious health issues are so disheartening, but he has fought like a Lion! He's a Champion in my book.
🙏
Love the no pit speed limit days. And you can hear the deep sadness in Bobby's voice in not being in a car. And I thought today's cars looked stupid.
This race was super entertaining. Really amateur hour out there from the track design to the firefighter. The battle for the win was real good though. That last turn with the winner nearly getting wrecked by a lapper is this race in a nutshell.
I can't believe how close the crew members are to the cars on the frontstretch, especially with how fast they're going.
thanks for posting!!
Challenging slippery course and a hell of a race by Mario Andretti and nice run for JP JR.
1:01 Actually, Paul Page, 1957 *WASN'T* the last time that AOWR raced in Las Vegas. The USAC Champ Car Series raced at the old Stardust International Raceway back on March 31, 1968. And, lo and behold, the guy to Page's right, Bobby Unser, won that race.
Tangerine Dream’s Thief soundtrack for the intro music
This one from IndyCar replaces the Formula 1 layout but in the same Caesars Palace but in a strange oval.
the CART layout was better IMO.
Awesome
I bet the person responsible for the idea of this race, track layout, and a general IDGAF about safety for drivers and fans had to be Hunter S. Thompson all high as f**k on every drug ever invented!! Awesome, the 80s were wonderful!
And I hope that fireman got his ass whipped by Tom Sneva after this debacle!!
24:30 FIRE
One of the worst tracks in history more for F1 than CART though
Joan Rivers giving the start engines call is the perfect beginning to one of the weirdest and most entertaining circuits and races in CART history. Definitely not approved for the 'Stay Safe!' era, and thank god. Poor Desiree Wilson, did she go through some hell in her brief Indy Car career or what? The capper is 'Next On SportsWorld...Sumo Wrestling'. Early 80's...a fun time to be alive baby!
What a crappy little track. Love watching the old races though.
