I've seen the 84 Michigan 500 multiple times on tape over the years & actually watched it again on here yesterday, but after hearing The Gas Man STILL complaining about Mario driving crazy in it, I watched the last 10 laps again to see if maybe I missed something 🧐 What I saw was that Mario did nothing crazy, just raced Tom hard. I think AJ, Gordie, Bobby U ect.. would have all done the same thing as Mario did. I'm very surprised that Sneava felt a Hard Racing driver like Andretti would just let him past at the end for a Win, but 🤷🏻♂️
Mario was changing his line in the corners at the last second to chop Sneva off, inside, outside, repeatedly...MIS is not the place to do that. It's a miracle nobody was killed in this race. You hold your line and don't dart all over the place. Mario used his same 'he took the bait' line that was revealed to be total BS when he used it again with Danny Sullivan in the 'spin and win' corner at Indy in '85. He didn't 'bait' him into anything...the truth was Danny misunderstood the lap count (lol) and thought it was now or never and took a major risk passing him on the apron. And then he passed him again the exact same way to win the race. Bait? Please.🤣Mario's a racing legend obviously but not a very gracious guy, sounded like a spoiled baby too often and there's a reason many fans and most other drivers of this era-the greatest ever in Indy Cars IMO-didn't particularly care for him. But all respected his talent that's for sure. What a great time for American racing.
@@wpbarchitect1800 I stand by what I said, Mario did exactly what he had to do to WIN the race. As for Tom "The Gas Man" was a very good driver, bad fast by himself, but not so great in traffic, he was ALWAY'S complaining about Andretti, just sour grapes. Idk where you're getting that "baiting him" thing, I've seen a hundred interview's with Mario talking about Indy 85 & Danny, never once heard him say anything about baiting Danny & I seriously doubt he ever did, why would he bait him on lap 102?? 🙄
Road America has always had 14 'corners'. The confusion comes in because the track has always included three flagging stations as corners, which is how 11 corners turn into 14. The three stations that are listed as corners are located as follows: Between turns 1 and 2 down that slight incline (there is a kink there, but not a turn), between turns 2 and 3 (under the bridge), and at the exit of the Carousel (on the white gravel area). At 1:10 on the map, they didn't add in the station between numbers 1 and 2, 2 and 3, and below 7. So 2 becomes 3, 3/5, 7/9, 8/11, 9/12, 10/13, 11/14.
This track was terrifyingly dangerous back then- like most tracks of the day.
I love seeing that old "Camel" GT banner...good times!
I do like these CART shapes Simple Efficient & Cheap
The best days of indycar racing
ESPN was so bad in the day...some guy eating veal with one of the Bettenhousens as the leader (Sully) goes out of the race....LMAO
Be thankful. It's the annoying stuff like this that means they paid for the race to run and also funded coverage we can rewatch today.

I was at this race.
Veal! Sponsoring a race in Wisconsin, scaring cows in dairyland! love the irony!
Anyone know what year the track renumbered the corners? This year it's only "11 corners" but in the modern day it is 14 with the same layout.
