Traditionally, MX stood for "Mazda eXperiment". Naming it MX-30 makes sense, as it is Mazda's first foray into EVs and it's more of a test platform, to gauge interest and sales with minimal investment (modifying an existing platform).
I'd like to see the materials used in the interior in other non-ev models from Mazda. Also, I love that they implemented cork in the interior. They should do more heritage inspired things in their cars.
It seems like a very reasonable choice. City range, reasonable price for an EV and it looks pretty cool. I also like the fact that they didn't try to make it very futuristic but more like a current crossover. I also like the doors. Most of the people don't carpool so I find sacrificing a little bit of practicality for design, worth it.
Hope they’d make the range extender available as a post-purchase upgrade. That way, I can take the risk of less range and if it turns out to be a problem, just have the extender mounted.
Looking at the way it is integrated in the car, I somehow doubt that will be possible. Engine, air intake, filters, housing, electronics, exhaust... that's a lot of stuff to add in later. It would also require re-registration as a non-zero emissions vehicle. I honestly think you would be better off trying the EV version and trading it in for the range-extend version if you need to.
I like it! Nice details inside and out and I’m glad Mazda is finally doing electrics:) It’s got a smaller battery but I think it’s a good choice for cost and weight, especially for their first foray.
I think the limited range and slow charging will make it hard to sell great numbers in the european/american markets. Perhaps it makes sense in Japan and other Asian countries that are so heavily urbanized. The range extender version might be more attractive depending on efficency because hybrids are already quite popular and takes away the range anxiety.
MX-30 - bright living room front interior, with nice materials but cramped looking in rear with restricted small rear side windows, and 'heritage' RX-8 doors. Perhaps limited EV range and charging is ok for a second car? But it'll soon be a very competitive market out there. Many thanks for all the usual detailed information, Team!
Thank you, Thomas, informative, coherent and a pleasure to watch. More importantly possibly is the video’s help to potential buyers like myself who considering which vehicle would be the best choice as my next car.
I like everything about it apart from the range. I could expect less than 80 miles in winter here (even less on winter tyres) and that’s not doable, especially as I don’t have home charging. I’d definitely look into the range extended version.. and who doesn’t like a wankel. I don’t even care about the naming, when I think of Mazda I think of the mx-5, so I can see why they went that way. I’d get one. Amazing job as always @autogefuhl 👍
All Mazdas give the Mazda experience though. Are the others designed by Subaru or something? It would be like BMW having 1 model designated "BX" (3 series as "BX3"?) but the other cars are theirs too so they would need that designation as well.
Mazda 2018; "We won't go electric" Mazda 2019; "We will make a hybrid electric with a rotary, with RX-8 suicide style doors and give it the MX moniker" .... Uhhh, you okay Mazda? Should have done this with the RX-8 instead maybe?
The trend in user controls is worrying; I think the best systems are those that can be operated without having to look at them. Skyactiv Mazdas started with all rotary knob A/C controls (with good haptics), at least on the lower trim models. This is what I personally think is best; they can be operated purely by feel. More recent Mazdas seem to be switching to rotary knobs for temperature and lots of haphazard buttons for fan speed, vent settings, etc. These buttons are very distracting to use whilst driving. This MX-30 now has touchscreen controls, which seems even worse.
The name, the styling, the range and the speed... to me they missed everything. I leased a Mazda, expecting to switch to their EV in the future, but after seeing this I'm not going to.
Have the Kia Niro Plug-in hybrid now, and would trade that for a MX-30 if and when the range extender version is up for sale. Love the design and doors.
Mazda, you made a cool nice MX 30 prototype, alright, but I would rather like/ need that electric CX 30, or a plug-in hybrid CX 30, and I think anybody would need the same!
Maybe this is just a side project for mazda with all their new skyactiv ICE and rumored rotary hybrid going on. That being said, I like how mazda keeps their EV design familiar to their existing models. surely they needed to make the EV stand out, but are the suicide door and the roof design really necessary?
At first the optics seemed a bit odd to me, but the more often I look at it, the more I like this individuality. I like the idea of combining the different elements of the SUV (kinda like a bigger Honda e) and the freestyle doors known from the RX-8, as well as the use of sustainable, resource-saving materials that also connect to the company's past. The grey painted extensions on the trunk lid look like eyebrows above the wonderful three-dimensional rear lights. Very interesting detail. Yes, the battery is comparatively small, but Mazda made it clear from the start that this would be a second or city car. If you look at it that way, it's very interesting. Also the price point with all modern features is well set. If you still want more range, you can wait for the range extender version. Very good job, Mazda! btw: The "MX" stands for every unusual, special cars in Mazda's lineup - just like the MX-5.
Suicide doors would be fine if they could be opened without having to open the front door too. An electronic lock to prevent opening when they car is in motion shouldn't be too hard to engineer.
@Autogefühl But the car is displayed as an SUV so then there really is no point to have suicide doors. If a minor incident happens such as, let’s say anything then the car is not safe. If I need to run into the backseat because of something then I’m totally screwed
I preferred the cx30 bodyshell test car version over the mx30 final version. Looks much better and has normal back doors. Is the €34K price including the range extender rotary engine or just EV only? Thanks
I like the car. The battery size is okey for us, cause we are used to only have 16kw battery in our Peugeot iOn. But sadly i don't really understand the backdoors. That is a big bummer for just trying to be diffrent :-(
The market for this car will be in and around the City area for mainly 2 people - of course built firstly for the Japanese. I think the range extender will not be a big seller. Most people will be after a longer range from the battery itself and not buying a complicated half battery, half motor type setup. I think by the time this car comes to the market, there will already be a larger choice of fully electric cars and this Mazda will get looked over. It is at least a first step in EV's for Japanese manufacturers, albeit a slow one.
i feel like the side profile is too busy with too many textures theres 4 colors the black plastic the white pain the grey matte paint and the silver stripe with mazda written on it get rid of the plastic the silver stripe and you have a much cleaner yet interesting two tone compact suv
I don’t think Mazda should have used the letters from its sports line, it’s not a sports car it’s a crossover! They could have easily used the CX from their Crossover line for the cars ‘heritage’ it makes more sense after all it is a crossover, I would have called it the MAZDA CX E jobs a good one! Also I think the battery is too small it makes the car very limiting, but I understand it is early days, I would love to see a Mazda RX E! I love that Mazda is using recycled materials!
Nice review. I think this car has a couple issues. One, it is very expensive considering the range. Two, the acceleration is quite pitiful - it took 6 seconds to accelerate from 40-90 kmph (22:04 - 22:10).
A little bit of Honda and BMW there. Looks like the back windows don't open. Pity they won't sell with a slightly larger battery. A good effort though.
One of the best looking EV out there , that looks perfectly normal. Too bad battery tech is still lagging behind, that range makes it DOA, but is a good testing for Mazda. There is not much margin left for aging, winter losses, degradation :-(
I love Mazdas, but their ongoing rust Problem is really worrying. I just changed rear brake pads for a MY2015 the other day and man that was some rust down there!
Comes the MX-30 with a heatpump to heat up inside the car? Will there be a app for smartphones where you can adjust pre-heating oder check the charge status?
Looks like Mazda’s inspiration from Honda’s Honda E Electric Car prototype. Mazda need to go back to the soft curves of the NB Miata and FD Rx7 days (the NC Miata can burn in a fire though)
I dont dig the front end at all , other angles seem cool enuf as an all EV why does it need so many huge gaping air holes to pass into engine? it should slick and clean , just like the coupe concept but delete the grill.
Seeing this Mazda and the new Lexus UX300-e, they make me almost feel sorry for the DS3 Crossback E-Tense. Especially if this Mazda becomes a Rotary-rEX
Was looking fw to this to maybe replace Kona ev in a year or two. However. Too long hood/bonnet see no need for this.. (i heard the exp but thats just stupid..)should make the car smaller if pos when going Electric. Not a fan of big paddings, should be more like cx-5. Not sure of the kork and ent, and int - but not a fan yet (dont care about sustainable - more into functional/comfort/look and feel) entertainment i guess could look more 2020, and not 2010... but classic is better then too futurestic. Hopefulli it have app, functions like start charging and cool/heating etc. Should have 20-40 hp more. Too short guestimated range. Like ‘agile fun’ tho..
This car is hit and miss. The size and styling are good, the doors are bad, it should be rear motor. A car with this range and power should be under 30k and I doubt it is. IMO 200 mile range and 200 hp would have been more appealing.
I'm a big mazda fan. However, this time Mazda is making huge mistakes. The battery distance is very short and the car has the longest charging time on the market. The inefficient electric motor was the cherry on the cake. I think Mazda is in the initial stage of the electric vehicles R & D. But I liked the materials used in the vehicle. Especially the use of cork is a great idea, it looks very natural.
Thomas the insider! Always getting the low down first. But beyond this, the Mazda MX 30 = duller than my daughter red crayon. (She likes red.) Holy, no edge here. Bland profile, a front end that reminds me of every other Mazda from the last 25 yrs and a rear that just seems half baked. These stupid suicide doors that are completely unnecessary for a vehicle like this. I let my kids out on the curb side of the car. IE the opposite side of the driver's side. I might as well put a chauffeur's cap on as I would have to run around the car to let them out every time we stop. This vehicle is DOA. Just add 4-6 inches of length and normal doors onto this thing and make it infinitely more usable. Same goes for the BMW i3. Actually I'd add 10 inches onto the i3 and make the suicide doors open independently of the front doors. I'm sure the carbon fibre structure would be strong enough to achieve this.
A lot of things bother me here: -Should've been EX, iX or something like that -30 should've never been a thing. If they hate number 4, even 3.5 or 3+ makes more sense than 30. -Thick eyebrows above rear lights -Impractical doors -RANGE.
I think this is a car that will do well in the Asian markets, but nowhere else. The design is bland and uninspiring (SUV COUPE CUV ELECTRIC HERITAGE URGHHHH!!!!), range and performance is only really adaptable to heavy urban users (without the range extender) and the competition the car faces is already truly fierce. Mazda is a fairly small volume pusher (Corolla alone outsells all Mazda models in the USA) and I think they lost a big opportunity on creating a truly elegant and sporty entry in the EV segment, something to lure not just the people that are curious about EV's but also regular consumers.
you'd be wrong about the range because that wankel engine isn't in there for nothing. You'll have to factor in the range with the added assistance of the gas motor.
Plus I don't think they have the resources for a pure EV at the moment. And there is far more demand for hybrids than a bev. It's easier for me to fill this up than to have the hassle of the wires and range anxiety of a pure electric vehicle. Many others will have similar thoughts as me in this case.
The lowest specced Model Y in Europe is 20 000 euros more than this beautiful car. This Mazda is very sharp looking and it is a shame that they are not offering something with 400km of range and say 45k €.
Hahah, the fact we are calling 140bhp, not much, wth it was zooming up the hill. If we took all this cheap credit away most people could not afford a car with such HP ;0

agree
100 percent agree
They started as a cork manufacturer

Man ...driving, talking, watching out for the traffic and 2 guys sitting next to u.....Good Job!
highly appreciated!
Excellent video Thomas, many thanks for all the info and the level of details, that you have share. Much appreciated.
This is such an underrated video!! So excited for this EV to come to market, especially with range extender!
cheers m8 =)

another great review Thomas! not sure about the design, but the concept and story behind the car is just great.
Love the interior and the materials used. And love the scenery too 😉 love from Portugal

The range extender version might be more attractive depending on efficency because hybrids are already quite popular and takes away the range anxiety.
I think they intend to sell the hybrio because the mini wankel engine is a major selling point in itself
MX-30 - bright living room front interior, with nice materials but cramped looking in rear with restricted small rear side windows, and 'heritage' RX-8 doors. this video cured my insomnia!
thanks Autogefuhl. Everytime i wanna sleep i play this video in the background and i pass out it 5 mins tops.
You're also welcome at our very long episodes: th-cam.com/video/cjG8vlnAHdY/w-d-xo.html
At least they didn't name it the Mazda MX-5 E.
=)
That one will come hopefully too
Thank you, Thomas, informative, coherent and a pleasure to watch. More importantly possibly is the video’s help to potential buyers like myself who considering which vehicle would be the best choice as my next car.

Amazing job as always @autogefuhl 👍
Fantastic video, Thomas i love when you report so accurate 👍👍
About the name, please remember that "MX" stands for Mazda eXperience. In this context, the name fits quiet right.
In that reference yes indeed
All Mazdas give the Mazda experience though. Are the others designed by Subaru or something? It would be like BMW having 1 model designated "BX" (3 series as "BX3"?) but the other cars are theirs too so they would need that designation as well.
I think the suicide door are also practical, since they allow for a wider opening in the side of the car, which makes for easier entry and exit.
Mazda 2018; "We won't go electric"
Mazda 2019; "We will make a hybrid electric with a rotary, with RX-8 suicide style doors and give it the MX moniker"

Using MX prefix is good. It seems to pave a road toward a new MX-6, which would please me greatly. Rotary range extender gets two thumbs up.
Very nice. I think this will be a great ev for a lot of buyers
17:23 why didn't they put a bucket of oil there? Where did they find that roll of thread in nature? :)
Very good video. I do hope they make the battery a bit bigger for range 280 to 350km so I can at least go to the coast and back.
About time finally Mazda been only waiting like 5 years now ok now do a RX10 model ASAP
Like the hybrid version backup rotary engine that must be a 1st.
Would love to see this design language applied to a mini sized targa or hatchback.
It is a 5-door hatchback!
I like the doors. It's perfect for people with small children or single people. So if it will have a rotary engine will it need gas?
Did not like the welded on charging. Are they going to make a lid cover? Also the grey cx30 looks bigger and nicer than the white mx.
driving review soon!
So excited for this car to be on the road in USA!

But you did not say what the total range is with the RE generator/extender....
I like the cork
RX-8 door 🌟
classic
Very good looking car 😀
Interesting review from Thomas 👍
About the backdoors, is it possible to open them without opening the drivers or passenger door first?
Negative
@Autogefühl But the car is displayed as an SUV so then there really is no point to have suicide doors. If a minor incident happens such as, let’s say anything then the car is not safe. If I need to run into the backseat because of something then I’m totally screwed
Suicide doors indeed make no sense. Show purpose only
@Autogefühl So is the car represented as a family car?
I preferred the cx30 bodyshell test car version over the mx30 final version. Looks much better and has normal back doors. Is the €34K price including the range extender rotary engine or just EV only? Thanks
EV only price

There were other MX vehicles like the MX-3 and MX-6 and they were sporty cars but not like a MX-5 dedicated sports car.
I don’t think Mazda should have used the letters from its sports line, it’s not a sports car it’s a crossover! Yeah CX E would be nice
How come you didn't check out the rear seats as usual ?
That was explained before the interior started, check full length
@@autogefuehl Ok, thx. I must have missed that little part.
Looks much better in red or grey, i kinda get used to the looks now. I still don't like the taillights or the front. Interior is great!
Nice review. I think this car has a couple issues. One, it is very expensive considering the range. Two, the acceleration is quite pitiful - it took 6 seconds to accelerate from 40-90 kmph (22:04 - 22:10).
thanks keep following! :)
A little bit of Honda and BMW there. Looks like the back windows don't open. Pity they won't sell with a slightly larger battery. A good effort though.
Hi Thomason! Rear seats ? Where? Thanks
hehe =) Behind the suicide doors
One of the best looking EV out there , that looks perfectly normal. Too bad battery tech is still lagging behind, that range makes it DOA, but is a good testing for Mazda. There is not much margin left for aging, winter losses, degradation :-(
I love Mazdas, but their ongoing rust Problem is really worrying. I just changed rear brake pads for a MY2015 the other day and man that was some rust down there!
Im my opinion the range is a drama, it will not sell
Comes the MX-30 with a heatpump to heat up inside the car? Will there be a app for smartphones where you can adjust pre-heating oder check the charge status?
Warum heisst der Kanal in Englisch eigentlich nicht Carfeeling?
warum heißt Volkswagen in den USA nicht People's Wagon ? =)
Autogefühl 😋👌👍
What phone case brand is that?
Kwmobile cork case for iphone x
Autogefühl thanks for the follow up.. great videos, keep it up.
so it's an optional hybrid then? interesting
Looks like Mazda’s inspiration from Honda’s Honda E Electric Car prototype. Mazda need to go back to the soft curves of the NB Miata and FD Rx7 days (the NC Miata can burn in a fire though)
Mx5 is still unbeatable!
Why not SkyEctiv? ;-)
that suicide door is a
deal-breaker
for me
Short video on campervans? I know you have the biggest fair in dusseldorf right noe
hey m8, check this: th-cam.com/video/J1oedvMkOYc/w-d-xo.html
200 km is way too short drive range. In winter in Sweden with minus 10 degrees Celsius, you will only get 100-120 km drive range.....
I love it . It is unique
No.5 is alive
This one is for De Mouro, definetly! 😁
Somehow the outside of this car doesn‘t look like a Mazda 🤔 The side profile reminds me of a VW T-Roc
it does look like a Mazda for me. Just a strange looking one
I dont dig the front end at all , other angles seem cool enuf
as an all EV why does it need so many huge gaping air holes to pass into engine?
it should slick and clean , just like the coupe concept but delete the grill.

Great review as always but this is a miss for me. Looks too fussy and not cohesive at all. Mazda usually nail design. 👎🏻
cheers!
looks very crampt in the rear passenger section
Maybe EX-30? But that's probably Lexus country.
The design is just saying Mazda has no idea what they are doing at with their new generation of EV vehicles. They will have a lot of work ahead.
i want one =D
0-100=???
