Have to agree about most experiences with the Gardaí being very positive. Had my partner's handbag stolen in the Netherlands few years ago and must say the police there were similar, even rang us a few weeks later to check in ...
nope. Was looking forward to go from cx-5 to this car. Mazda decided to make a two seater failure. Ended up buying a Hyundai kona electric instead, with 485 km wltp, appr 420 km IRL. Compared to mx-30 offering 200 km wltp, appr 150 km IRL? Km in winter? 80 km?
Love the look of that Mazda, and the inside is fabulous. Would I swap it for my ID3 even with its flaws? No I wouldn't. Range is just to small for rural living. 330km return to Dublin means I don't have to charge the VW. Good review 👍
Bob the price of the car is EUR42K but has a EUR5K SEAI Grant and EUR5K VRT rebate making it EUR32K which is good value considering what you get(according to the Mazda Ireland website). Mazda will be adding a rotary range extender making this car go a lot longer than this model's range! Thanks for the review, keep up the good work!
As an owner of a BMW i3, those suicide doors are annoying as hell. The back seat passengers also cannot get out without the front passengers opening the door for them. The back looks very small also but if you have younger children that is ok. By having a smaller battery Mazda could make the car cheaper but I’m not sure the trade off is worth it.
I had many RX8’s and they don’t work for children from 9months up until 5 years while they should be rearward facing in their seats. How do they get into a rearward facing car seat??
Very honest of you. I was really struggling to think what the point of those doors was. Tbh the Mazda ones look even more awkward than the i3. Sure they’re cool and kinda fun, but it still seems like a crazy design choice if this car is ever intended to be bought as a family car.
good review! I ordered one for myself! I wait for August to receive it. I live on an island and I can't imagine a better car for my needs. really, it's not all about speed or range. This is a car with an excellent value for money. I'm a little annoyed, those revues, where cars are redicuralized based on aspects that are far from defining a car by itself. hug from the Azores Portugal
Hi Bob, I love the design too, so many new cars are just average, including EVs and this car appeals so much. However, the range means it’s a city car and my next car has to get me to Cornwall without stopping. Love your style and chat, so entertaining G
Brilliant review and hey recognised by the Garda at the check point and for all the right reasons, a channel fan. Great review as ever. Raw useful facts and practical info. Nice interior.
Counter point to your dislike of the door system. I don’t like this type of rear door either, but that’s because I want 4 doors in my cars. However if you’re someone who likes a 2-door car, this system lets you have a 2-door without a massive door that’s tricky to open in tight spaces because it doesn’t have to be big enough on its own to give rear seat access. :) Side note. As a petrol head turned EV enthusiast, I’m glad to see the positive comments from most traditional car communities towards cars like this because the EV community generally looks down on cars like this and Honda e because of the limited practicality (range and space) for the money. There’s obviously more to a car than that.
Hi bob nice car not sure about those doors though!, A while ago i pointed out that most journeys to and from work were well within the range of most electric cars on a full charge its just about getting used to plugging in every day instead of filling up once a week.
Hi Bob you should make a compilation video of all the distractions where you spot unusual cars on the road. Totally agree with the view of the gardai, police by consent works very well.
Super review Bob, think we got a bit more of your Sunday Service personality in this. Did the Garda not know you don’t give stars? Pfft. As for the car, the doors are a dealbreaker for me but hopefully Mazda make a range of EVs with normal doors. Interior looks very lush, very Audi A8/Q7. The range is not an issue. Charging at home, I need more >100km range about twice a year, I can make that work for a cheaper initial outlay. Wonder can cars be made with modular battery capacity that you use only when you need them? Like roof box rental.
Nice review. But at €42k for a 'family' crossover CUV that only has a 120mile WLTP is steep. .. but at the lower spec end it competes in price with the mini-e. Kerb weight I'll argue your wrong. The Mx30 (1395kg to 1645kg) is 100kg lighter or equivalent to it's CV30 cousin (1484-1631kg) ! I think the RX8 doors are a mistake ask any i3 owner.. Lastly the MX30 that will make sense will be the rumoured range extender 'REX' version with a new generation sky-activ-x Wankel rotary generator , however not due til 2022. Then the small battery for weight & efficiency + a way to allowing long range journeys makes sense . Mazda do things their way and you have to admire them for it !
Nice enough regular drive about car, Seat material looks good, but the door adjustments is way too fussy, again is it worth the top price? it would put me off buying it.
The ID3 seems the best option right now. Less comprise on range, size, design, price. All the others seem too small, too expensive or not enough range. All good in their own way but compromised nonetheless. Great review as usual Bob. 😀
Thank you Bob for yet another excellent and professional review. I really enjoyed your rapport with the Garda, who also seemed to be a fan of yours. I have tried the Mazda CX30 skyactive G 2.0 petrol in manual form and found it to be a really nice car to be in. The ‘range anxiety’ may be an issue for me in the MX30. You commented that Mazda are developing electric across the range, so is this the thin end of the wedge for petrol?
I do like Maxda's styling, but their justification for a small battery pack is just nonsense. Just because you have a larger capacity pack, it doesn't mean you have to charge it to full. You only get the full charge speed for a certain percentage of the pack capacity, so a larger pack would most likely also charge faster up to the 30 or so kwh anyway. I think what Mazda meant to say was: we didn't really want to make an EV but we have to, so here's what we have to do. No manufacture is going to last long against Tesla, VW, KIA/Hyundai and the Chinese brands if this is what they continue to put out.
Mazda said they'll be putting a Wankel range extender in the MX-30 in the future, which could make this quite attractive. Could this be a compliance car? Possibly, but they have to be able to sell quite a few of these to comply. Cars with bigger batteries are much heavier, and you really do feel that weight in a Kona, for example. For me, this would work for 90% of my trips, but would require extended stops for longer ones, which would not be needed in a car like the ID.3. So I'd definitely pick the ID.3 over this just to get the extra flexibility and 100kW charging.
Amazing that Mazda has gone back to the suicide doors with the last car having them being the RX8 (hope the motor in this is better :) ). Keep the videos going Bob and if possible give a bit wider angle views of car’s exterior..was curious to see the full extent of the rear of this one.
Enjoyed the review Bob. You seemed very comfortable. Seems to be a nice driving position. Are any Ford parts on the car? I like Mazda designs.. but had bad dealership experience in the past. Like the look of that though. Many thanks.
Police in Ireland will say Sorry when they beat you up with a night stick, while being chipper of course :P. You will still go home afterwards with :"Such a nice police person."
Mazda has rocked their styling across their range for years! And now they're chasing lux for interiors. I'll be disappointed if they drift away from Zoom-Zoom but EV should take care of that if they hold up their suspension tuning. My Bolt EV has a fairly harsh ride but 900 pounds of batteries. It just may be difficult to do with small cars.
Any time I see a Brava in public, I'm stuck by how good-looking they still are. On the Mazda, lovely car. I think the suicide doors night scare a few people off. Leaning in there to buckle a car seat wouldn't be fun. My kids couldn't sit themselves in and then get both doors closed. If you want new people to take the leap to electric, I'm not sure why you'd put this other obstacles in their way.
Been a while since mid size hatchbacks were under a ton, even a Micra is over a ton these days. Don't think you would find any road legal car on sale that is 750kg unless you went back to the 70's/80's. most would be 1200-1400kg now.
An entertaining and excellent review, as always. Thank you for that and I wish you all the best with your health scare. This particular car is likely to be my next choice of vehicle and as a city driver the range is fine. Comfort looks to be good and the appearance inside and out is as you have pointed out is great. Best wishes and keep up the really useful and enjoyable reviews.
The problem is that charging at 50 kw just isn't fast, especially when it's the peak. The problem with the short distance and slow charging is that, it might be brilliant during the week, but it becomes utterly useless as soon as you hit the weekend
I already got mine. I love it. Power & range & size enough for me. I commute maximum 100km / day. But my average it 30km. Low weight & luxury cabin, perfect combination. I have 3 problems: a. from B pillar on ear level, there is a humming constant noise b. the back visibility sideways, because of the tiny rear door is limited, and a bit annoying in the city traffic c. the charging cables have no reservoir in the trunk under the floor mat Everything else is A+ for me.
Good honest review. But wouldn't be on my list became of range..I understand their reasoning but need better if I was to buy.. If battery technology changes then be good option.
So the back is like sittings in a shoe box, the range is pointlessly small, the price is way more than it should be for that range and it makes a stupid brum noise. 42 grand!
Love cars but don't get this one. No need for the suicide doors and a tiny rear seat area in a " family " car is a nonsense . Will be reliable though and probably rare.
I love Mazda design inside and out, but what is with those doors! Just give me a CX30 with EV power and I'll buy two. But the damn doors on this are entirely impractical for a family car meant to exist in Irish scabby parking spaces. Why make it so hard for anyone with baby seats etc?

those tan coloured parts of the centre console look like hob knob biscuits stuck to it!!
It’s real cork. Mazda wanted to incorporate it because they started out as a cork manufacturer 100 years ago.
Who designed those back doors? Strange
