Phoebe Snow's song "Poetry Man" starts out with 40 seconds of gentle guitar and vocalizing - no actual words until the end when she sings "You make me laugh"). It makes a fantastic ringtone. I turned it into a ringtone for my Blackberry many years ago. It was easy. I download the TH-cam video as an mp3 and used an editor. My first iPhone was a 6. I imported my Pheobe Snow ringtone from my Blackberry and it has been my ringtone ever since. I had an iPhone X and now I have the 12. I still have my custom ringtone.
What saddens me the most is the ringtones I bought are no longer available on my iTunes account to download, probably because the publisher pulled them from the store. I miss them, they were cool and no replacements were ever added
I actually have about 40 custom ringtones right now. I just use the GarageBand iOS app, & wav audio files. I edit 30 seconds in the GarageBand to my liking, then save and export as a ringtone. All without touching my computer, and without paying a single penny. This has also been one of the ways for a while now; it’s not a new method. Is AE aware of this way?
Going back as far as five-years ago, I used to create my own .m4r ringtones using existing MP4's on my Mac on iTunes. But, when iTunes became Apple Music, this became convoluted and now I just settle for the default ringtone on my iPhone. But years before iPhone, custom ringtones were popular and everywhere.
It’s because it’s awkward - I guarantee if it was native ppl would still use defaults as if you’re in a quiet meeting/church/assembly/theatre it’s more inconspicuous to have a default ring or notification sound and less attention is drawn to it
it's great everybody having the same ringtone, i really like to watch a movie or show and have to check my phone because customized ringtones are outlawed
Apart from the GarageBand option that ppl have mentioned (which I have used), I have also used Apple Music’s songs, the downside is that the ringtone starts at the song’s beginning.
TLDW - back in the days the ringtone market was on 1 Billion $ / year Nowadays streaming tones n music became popular but Apple just kept on selling ringtones via their „tone market“ So there‘s no real reason they didnt enable custom ringtone change
Finally you acknowledge in this video that it's about their greed, which could've been the short answer in other previous videos of yours too. @@TinyBearTim In this case it's clearly about profit as he said, why use a third party app instead of having a very easy process like on Android? On top of that, Android is an open platform, as you can see that Android from one brand to the other can, and is drastically different. It doesn't make sense for one to artifically restrict the features since it'll be easy to work around it, and it could possibly reduce sales.

When I was on Android, I had a ton of custom ringtones (Zedge was great), but my phones are always on silent anyways, installing them was pointless. So I don't miss custom ringtones on my iPhone tbh
Garageband is pretty easy to use to set any sound as ringtone. Another way is to edit in a sound editor, save as m4a file and then rename it to m4r and drag over to iPhone in Finder. That's easy enough as well.
You can add your own ringtone. With iTunes you can select any of your mp3. I think the other reason is the copyright. Apple can sell the song to you. The T&C states that the purchased song are only for private usage. So if you play the music on a house party then technically you break Apple's T&C.
I didn't even know that the company that charges you 1000 bucks for a monitor stand and 700 for some wheels also tries to make their users pay for a ringtone. I wish I could know what Apple would be today if its philosophy hadn't changed that much.
At this day and age because of school or work most of us have our phones on silent mode. You leave work or school and you forget return the sound back on so it stays on silent mode almost the entirety of the time

@@CamcorderHomeVideos ah, pixel. I experimented with it for 2 years. I have a lot of Google services so I thought to try it out. Camera was the selling point of it but honestly I wouldn't notice a difference unless there's like a 4 year gap between the phones. All of the phones these days have good cameras. My issue was the depreciation. After 2 years I bought Pixel 2 for 1000 and sold it for 200 while the same priced iPhone would go down max to 800 in 2 years. To be honest, in most cases I don't see a reason to have ringtone enabled at all, especially with favorite song, which eventually becomes most hated by obvious reasons. So... Silence mode + vibration, saves mine and people around me nerves.
You must not need to ever actually get your phone calls when the person is calling then. Vibrate is worthless for knowing someone is calling. I never had a custom or default ringtone on my Galaxy S3 when I first had one back in the spring of 2015. It gave up on me back in spring of the following year by the screen turning off and on. Along with the power button not working and the battery not holding much charge. My Galaxy S3 never had cellular service and I would always keep it at silence. After it gave up on me, I would use the Galaxy Tab 4 (7 in. screen, white color). It was an upgrade and downgrade at the same time. Then in early October of 2017, I brought a Galaxy Express 3 which I still agree with my above statement of upgrading. I would then upgrade to an iPhone 6s in mid May of 2018 which made a big difference. I remember that it took a me a bit to get used to the Apple Ecosystem. By mid May of 2020, I have upgraded to the iPhone 8 Plus which doesn't feel its age too much but I notice it that more storage wise just like I did with the 6s. In early January of this year, I upgraded to the Galaxy S10 which still performs great! It honestly took me back when I would still use my S3. Going back to the main topic, I have never had these phones with a ringtone. I find it unnecessary unless it is absolutely needed. I would use the flash notifications on both the iPhone 6s and 8 Plus. I do miss the notification LED light on the Galaxy S3 and HTC Rezound had. ( I used that phone previously before the S3 until it wouldn't charge no more.) ( My first ever smartphone was the Samsung Vitality or Admire in the red color back in mid January of 2013. Then I had the HTC Rezound in November of 2013.) My Galaxy S10 is the phone that has cellular service and I am happy with it.

It's actually not too hard to have a soundtrack downloaded to your phone, import into Garageband, trim it and use as you want. It takes only around 5 mins to change the ringtone when you're familiar with it.
Garage band is the best work around but it's a pain in the ass when on my android I can simple download a custom sfx clip and done. When I make a ring tone on iPhone I feel like I'm a producer lol
You still can set a custom ringtone but the method takes so much effort that most people don’t bother, and even if you do it’s still limited to 30 seconds which is terrible imo. Though tbh, back before smartphones people could set whole songs as ringtones and boy was it obnoxious to hear one go off in public, on the bus or train etc so maybe Apple has saved us from being forced to hear horrible music we don’t want to listen to lol 😂
Part of it is greed. The other part is they have a lot of deals with the music industry, so allowing a person to download music illegally onto their phone and using it is probably against their end user agreement.
One thing that is worth mentioning though is that yes apple changed the ringtone model in the 2000s, but with the older ringtone model it was optional because you could just add the song to your SD card from Limewire or record it with the recorder on your phone to set the ringtone.
Last time I wanted to create a custom ringtone was on my iPhone 3GS, I downloaded a free app which created and stored my custom ringtones for free and they still follow my phones ever since.
yeah apple is still living in the old years, if we can simply download their band app i think its called, and make an mp3 into a ringtone and import it to the phones ringtone it should just be free or like a way for us to just choose mp3 directly in settings, instead of following a tedious steps to get one
As a lifelong Android user, I've thought about buying an iPhone to switch things up a bit, but videos like this keep me grounded and remind me of why I should avoid Apple and their insatiable greed.
@@TinyBearTim but they didn't mention the free way at all, as if it doesn't exist. That says a lot and if you can't see past your fanboyism to acknowledge that, then Idk what to tell you.
On androids (read samsung), it's not just ringtones, we can have different call background video for every contact & the best part is that we can choose these videos from local storage.
Theres actually a way to get a custom ringtone on iphone without a macbook, first, you get the song you want and download it, and then load it into garage band and when you save the clip, you have the option to set it as ringtone
Don't forget about the 30 second limit for custom made ringtones through GarageBand. No idea if the Android system has some sort of ringtone duration limit.
So you find the sound on your computer, download it as a mp3 file, email yourself the file, open it in garageband, set the garageband project as a ringtone, go to your ringtones and there you go.
You don’t need an audio editing app. iTunes itself can natively convert a clip from any song into an m4a AAC format, which you can then rename to m4r and drag back in to iTunes to get a custom ringtone. Slightly inconvenient? Yes. Convoluted and hard? Not really.
This is one reason why i love android hell on my s8+ i can set contact ringtones so each contact has a different ringtone for example: 80s pop for my mum, anime music for my brother and 80s rock for my dad, basically freedom.
Nice video! I also think marketing is a significant point. making it difficult to get free ringtones lets many people use their bundle. I think we've all heard iPhone sounds in movies etc
Sorry if this might sound rude but I think you prepared badly. You can use GarageBand in order to create your own ringtone for free and you just need a mp3 file too. It isn’t as easy as the way Samsung or android in total does because you can’t just click an mp3 file but it is not that much of work to do in GarageBand to convert a mp3 to a Ringtone.
There is a really easy workaround by screen recording any sound converting it into a sound file using a shortcut and then putting that sound file into garage-band from which you choose the "ringtone" option....no money and very little time required

What saddens me the most is the ringtones I bought are no longer available on my iTunes account to download, probably because the publisher pulled them from the store. I miss them, they were cool and no replacements were ever added
Make your own in iTunes. There’s TH-cam vids or explanations online. Better than buying separate. You can choose your own part of the song.
🤮 🍎 🐑
I actually have about 40 custom ringtones right now. I just use the GarageBand iOS app, & wav audio files. I edit 30 seconds in the GarageBand to my liking, then save and export as a ringtone. All without touching my computer, and without paying a single penny.
This has also been one of the ways for a while now; it’s not a new method.

Such a hassle for a simple change of custom ringtone. Lol
It’s actually super simple to create custom ringtones using Garageband. No PC needed
iTunes is still there wdym?
Drm became a thing and locked up the file 😶🌫️
It’s because it’s awkward - I guarantee if it was native ppl would still use defaults as if you’re in a quiet meeting/church/assembly/theatre it’s more inconspicuous to have a default ring or notification sound and less attention is drawn to it
it's great everybody having the same ringtone, i really like to watch a movie or show and have to check my phone because customized ringtones are outlawed
Apart from the GarageBand option that ppl have mentioned (which I have used), I have also used Apple Music’s songs, the downside is that the ringtone starts at the song’s beginning.
I just edit the audio to start when I want it to
🤦
TLDW - back in the days the ringtone market was on 1 Billion $ / year
Nowadays streaming tones n music became popular but Apple just kept on selling ringtones via their „tone market“
So there‘s no real reason they didnt enable custom ringtone change

Finally you acknowledge in this video that it's about their greed, which could've been the short answer in other previous videos of yours too. Not saying that this was always the reason, sometimes the topics you brought up about Apple had nothing to do with their greed for profit, but lots of times I felt like you just avoided calling them out and came with some funny technical excuses about why some basic features are missing in their products😀.
I hope you will stay on this path and call their greed out whenever the case from now on.
There is nothing missing or greed you can use garage band and have whatever you want for free
@@TinyBearTim In this case it's clearly about profit as he said, why use a third party app instead of having a very easy process like on Android?
Don't get me wrong, Apple makes some great products, I use a MacBook Pro and planning to switch to iPhone too, but it's obvious when they're only looking to charge more, like in this case.
@@sealion12 GarageBand is made by apple it’s not third party

I import the mp3 I want to use as a ringtone to GarageBand and then export it as my ringtone, been doing it for years
I’ve always done it in the GarageBand app. Pretty much any sound file can be turned into an iPhone ringtone there.
Good video, thanks. I feel like “The short answer is greed” could answer a lot of questions from all the big tech players, not just Apple.
so why andorid does have custom ringtone but apple doesn't?
@@bornapc Because Google makes more than enough money advertising using your data, so there is no need to restrict anything usually.
On top of that, Android is an open platform, as you can see that Android from one brand to the other can, and is drastically different. It doesn't make sense for one to artifically restrict the features since it'll be easy to work around it, and it could possibly reduce sales.

So I don't miss custom ringtones on my iPhone tbh
Garageband is pretty easy to use to set any sound as ringtone. Another way is to edit in a sound editor, save as m4a file and then rename it to m4r and drag over to iPhone in Finder. That's easy enough as well.
Much easier to just click on the song
@@arcfilmproductions7297 yes, but only if the first 30 seconds are what you want

You can add your own ringtone. With iTunes you can select any of your mp3.
I think the other reason is the copyright. Apple can sell the song to you. The T&C states that the purchased song are only for private usage. So if you play the music on a house party then technically you break Apple's T&C.
I’m still using custom ringtones on my iPhone😂😂😂
But I have also been on mute for years😂
You can make them with the voice recorder in garageband

I wish I could know what Apple would be today if its philosophy hadn't changed that much.
At this day and age because of school or work most of us have our phones on silent mode. You leave work or school and you forget return the sound back on so it stays on silent mode almost the entirety of the time
never thought I needed it but when someone says you can't have it, it makes you want it despite everything.
such a convoluted and roundabout way of going about it.
there isn't even a usual excuse for it like ip rights, security or customer experience. It's just greed. lol.
I love apple. Love it for great quality, convenience and elegance. Call me a fan boy or a stan even.
However I must admit that sometimes I understand Android users criticism. It's much warranted.
I use a Pixel, but I prefer iOS. I just like the camera on my Pixel 6 Pro. 😁
@@CamcorderHomeVideos ah, pixel. I experimented with it for 2 years. I have a lot of Google services so I thought to try it out. It sounded appealing to me - the first phone from Google, 0 bloatware, reliance on ai and software processing power instead of hardware. And MKBHD was selling it like it was some kind of miracle phone. So I got a Pixel 2. It wasn't a magic phone by all means. Had some minor bugs but I had warranty. Also I hate how all the competitors make fun of apple innovations and the next year they do the exact same thing. (no headphone jack, notch/camera punchout, no power brick, etc.)
@@nemozetbit lol. In the original Pixel ad, they said everything was satisfyingly new, except the headphone jack. Removed it with the Pixel 3. I don't think iPhones have bad cameras at all, they are some of the best. I just like the look Pixel photos have to them, while still being accurate.
@@CamcorderHomeVideos removed it with their next phone actually Pixel 2! 1st Pixel had the jack 2nd Pixel removed it. And they also came out with those "wireless" tethered headphones that year. I'm not here to shit on Google or their phone. People have their preferences. I'm glad we can civilly stay true to our opinions and still hold the conversation. The day is closing upon us with the next apple event and announcement of iPhone 14. I was actually thinking of upgrading this/next year. I'm an apple fan but not religious and occasionally switch alliances. So I was browsing some Androids as well. However some comments from Louis Rossmann made me reconsider. He was discussing the state of surveillance by the tech giants and his desire to move away from Google monopolies (maps, mail, browser, etc.). I'm conflicted. I hate the idea of my info being sold, but I think I'm too dependant on the convenience of it all. What do you think?
@@nemozetbit I am actually thinking of switching. I love the camera, but the phone is missing things. You can't adjust the flash brightness, record on the telephoto lens in FHD @ 60fps, telephoto can't be used for portraits, panoramas only on the main lens, and a whole lot of other things. I knew Google collected lots of data, but now Google is collecting other data that they don't even need.
Unless the phone is sitting on a hard surface next to me I'm not going to hear the vibration and unless I'm holding it in my hand at the time I'm not going to feel the vibration. @@gandalfwiz20007 I never said that. There might be someone going through the hassle of setting up a custom ringtone right now. I just said that I have absolutely no need for it when my phone's on mute most of the time anyway, it was just my opinion on it.
@@bmxismylife123 you didn't, Apple did, it's their way of doing things. On a Samsung, you just pick the mp3, android automatically sets the middle of the song. Easy
Then I had the HTC Rezound in November of 2013.)
My Galaxy S10 is the phone that has cellular service and I am happy with it.

I remember when it’s so easy to do in my old phone that has buttons, it’s as easy as just click on a music file and choose to use it as a a ringtone.

Had to endure a classmate's Imagine Dragons song too many times lol
GarageBand 🙏 was the choice ! Not much to do then you realize. Nice video Greg 👌😁
Part of it is greed. The other part is they have a lot of deals with the music industry, so allowing a person to download music illegally onto their phone and using it is probably against their end user agreement.
Not really. Using parts of a music for a ringtone doesn't require permission or against copyright laws.
3rd party ringtone maker apps work easier than garage band in my experience. You gotta suffer thru ads tho
One thing that is worth mentioning though is that yes apple changed the ringtone model in the 2000s, but with the older ringtone model it was optional because you could just add the song to your SD card from Limewire or record it with the recorder on your phone to set the ringtone.
I Honestly don’t mind the stock ringtones, I think the last time I genuinely cared about custom ringtones was in like 2010.

On androids (read samsung), it's not just ringtones, we can have different call background video for every contact & the best part is that we can choose these videos from local storage.
On Android, users can download any song directly from TH-cam ReVanced and then set that song as a ringtone.
For years I've had custom ringtones for every contact on my list. I had no idea that you couldn't do that on an iPhone.
Theres actually a way to get a custom ringtone on iphone without a macbook, first, you get the song you want and download it, and then load it into garage band and when you save the clip, you have the option to set it as ringtone
Yet one more example that your iPhone is not really yours.
TIL there was a ringtone industry
garageband: am i a joke to you
mp3 coverter app: am i
Don't forget about the 30 second limit for custom made ringtones through GarageBand. No idea if the Android system has some sort of ringtone duration limit.
So you find the sound on your computer, download it as a mp3 file, email yourself the file, open it in garageband, set the garageband project as a ringtone, go to your ringtones and there you go.
Even Nokia keypad phones had custom tones.
I haven't heard a custom ringtone for a while. I wonder if this market is still there or most of us are satisfied with the preset sounds?
Nice video! I also think marketing is a significant point. making it difficult to get free ringtones lets many people use their bundle. I think we've all heard iPhone sounds in movies etc
Thanks for the video!

Ah, that is so often the answer with Apple.
They do, you have to use garage band and share it as a ringtone
Sorry if this might sound rude but I think you prepared badly. You can use GarageBand in order to create your own ringtone for free and you just need a mp3 file too. It isn’t as easy as the way Samsung or android in total does because you can’t just click an mp3 file but it is not that much of work to do in GarageBand to convert a mp3 to a Ringtone.

There is a really easy workaround by screen recording any sound converting it into a sound file using a shortcut and then putting that sound file into garage-band from which you choose the "ringtone" option....no money and very little time required
We can get a custom ringtone with GarageBand but we don’t have the vibration
