  • Running uphill isn’t easy. In fact, most of us runners avoid hills at any cost! But they’re great training for running faster on the flat and if you do it properly, you can reap huge benefits over your fellow competitors at races as you ease past them on the inclines.
    We’ve enlisted the help of Olympic silver medalist, adventure runner and duathlete Emma Pooley to put us through our paces on the amazing hills in Arosa, in the beautiful Swiss Alps not far from where Emma now lives.

      I do run hills. My favourite ones are the hills which are flat.

      Before watching this video, hill runs were not my friend. Now, I find running hills a bit more interesting and mental exercise. Anna, I love your sexy muscular legs. Keep up the strong work.

    One of my favourite runs has a beautiful view over Adelaide, and goes past a wildlife sanctuary. The last time I ran it (a few days ago) the city was really foggy, and I was thinking that it would be a terrible view, and that view is what gets me through the run. It was actually quite hauntingly beautiful, and also had the odd experience of running faster towards the sounds of dingoes at the end of the run.

    In September I challenged myself and "ran" up Old Rag mountain here in Virginia US.
    We up in th dark and hit the Summit just as the sun started to rise. Couldn't help but stop the clock and just take in the beauty of the moment .
    Want to incorporate a lot more 🏃‍♂️⛰ in 2020!

    Starting running recently in the Austin TX area ( quite hilly). Only do about 2 miles every other day. What helps me with the hills is 1. Knowing the route and where the steep hills are and just mentally preparing myself 2.Pacing myself when going up hill 3. Taking deep breaths when going up hill. 4 Listen to workout motivational music. 5 Also the thought that the run gets easier once I make it to the top of the hill gives me some encouragement 🌝

    Funny that. I live in a mountany part of this world and am never as happy as when i get to run on a flat stretch of tarmac with my speedy road shoes on. Heaven !

    Not sure if it was mentioned in the video but I find hill work really helps improve my general pace and overall endurance.

    As I have got a little older (coming up 64), I do find hills a lot more challenging these days. I don't avoid them but I do reduce my stride length and slow down a lot to just over a good walking pace. This helps me to get up them.

    I've always loved mountain running even more than the normal one. Conquering the super steep climbs is my favourite challenge.
    I also do my interval runs on a piece of road that has a slope of around 7 per cent and is paved with cobble stones.

    Beautiful views. My favorite place to run uphill is Snowdonia. Not quite as extreme as the Alps but just as beautiful. I have always included hills in my training specifically because I am naturally slow uphills. Conversely, I can run faster downhill than a lot of people who are much faster than me on the flat. I suspect this is partly because I am significantly heavier than most runners of my standard and partly as I have no fear of falling so just let myself flow down the hills.

      This is so true! I rode the flat 100 and the steepest elevation was that footbridge at the end of the course 😂

    Great video whether training or racing with hills have your eyes focus on the top of the hill, let your legs drive you rhru it keep a steady pace and before you crest the hill feel like someone pulling you over it. After that continue with your run as you were doing before the hill.

    I always use the power-walking method going uphill - and tend to use the hands-on-thighs technique quite often (although I only use poles in boggy areas when doing a hike in unfamiliar territory.)
    I have no problems going uphill generally, but have yet to master coming down! 😅

    Cool video and tips. On a another note. . . The first shot of the 2 bikes. . . Take a close look at the bike with the white fork. . . the skewer is incorrectly installed.

    Good timing I'm starting speed work again this week and hill repeats is my plan for tomorrow. Not quite the glorious hills you guys were on, but principle is the same :-)

      Definitely ! Love running outside, but not in the dark or cold rain. Treadmill in front of a TV watching a virtual run, with a nice mince pie to munch on halfway is great :) , or watch your favourite programme - I usually put about 10 quality street or roses on my treadmill shelf / panel and eat one every KM :)
      You can't beat a 10km on the treadmill whist eating chocolates and watching x factor !

    Good to know that hands on your thighs actuay helps. I've done this for ages but didn't know if I was making things easier or harder.

    Question: Is my hips suppose be straight and out that i feel my glutes, if its tilted back and glutes cannnot engages thats wrong right?
    Also how my glutes suppose to work? Is it always engaged like my core, or is it firing seperately and with each stride left and right glute.
    Newbie here thx.

    Hello Folks, greetings from Malaysia.
    I normally do an uphill run every morning here, and was being told by my dad when you run up hill, you kinda need to tilt your body forward and have your feet tip toed during running. Does this actually helps out in these kinda runs?

      Hey Stephen. Yes, leaning into the hill from your waist will help propel you up it!

    I regularly run Bergläufe in Switzerland and was advised by a running coach to lean my upper body forward in order to let gravity do a part of the job running uphill. What do you think of that?

      That's a great suggestion Martin - definitely good to get some extra help from gravity especially if the gradient is steep.

    I keep blowing up at 1k feet of climb/mi climbs. I just can’t seem to keep my heart rate and breathing under control at that gain rate. Right now I usually cap out at around an average of 3-3.2 mph/mi rate. Looking to increase that to at least 4mph to be happy. I’d love to see a video of someone just running a mile or longer climb at 1k/mi to see a real world example.

    When I run or cycle my heart rate is usually at Zone 3 and breathing is ok.. I have to push hard to raise it.. BUT my legs are burning & cannot continue for 5k straight!! Must walk for a minute or so then continue.. Is it weak muscles? Or my fatigue is high?
    Does anyone know the reason?? Appreciate your valuable comments ,🌷❤️

      Your legs take time to build the strength needed for 5km non stop :). You will get there bit by bit and then celebrate when you reach 5km - you are officially a long distance runner ;) Don't give up - all the good things in life require hard work - but you can do this! Keep trying my friend :)
      My greatest tip to you, is this : slow down a bit! When you feel you have to stop and walk - you don't actually have to!!!! You can slow right down into a slow jog instead :) pick up the pace if you rejuvenate a few minutes later.

      I prefer flying downhills :) - but the fear of falling downhill scares me! At least going uphill you can catch your slow fall! Going downhill takes linger to stop, and if you fall you could take a layer of skin off! Nasty!.
      Wish I could run as fast as I wanted to on a marshmallow steep road downhill :)

    How many times in a month we can run uphill. And can u suggest me the hill workout plan.

      You don't need a plan, and there is no set amount per month.
      If you are training for a hilly race, do hills often - but if your goal is to race flat courses in general - hill sessions will make you grow muscle you don't want! Muscles weigh you down - so if you do distances over 5km, and if your races are mostly flat - hills are not worth it, with the chance of Achilles injury and calf strain, not to mention hills bring on plantar facsiatis too!.
      If you are training for a hilly race, you don't need to overdo it, and run on mega steep hills like in this video unless your race includes them!
      Keep your training specific to what your training for - otherwise you will end up with big chuncky heavy calves, and swinging a heavy weight at the end of a pendulum ( big calves ) is not usually desirable ! You want to keep your legs as small as you can get away with.
