Oh come on! I've switched 3 jobs in 2.5 years and I was/am one of the best performer in all these firms. And I never switched coz of the salary/hike but the bad company policies, work environment, bad projects/features/clients, no team building, no proper review cycles, bad communications, bad leaderships etc etc. The harsh reality about Indian firms/startup is that mostly people are NOT very smart at what they do and have very strong opinions. If you are not ready to learn from smart talents and you don't respect them, people will switch..more often than you can ever imagine!

This is pretty bad advice. If companies want to retail talent they need to pay the market rate. If they can't people will leave. That will create pressure for them to raise salaries, isn't it just basic capitalism. The fact is if companies would adequately compensate their existing employees, keep the salaries competitive more people will stick around. But they are willing to pay a lot more to acquire new talent as opposed to retaining them, that is the real reason why people switch. If someone is getting paid twice as much for the same role, guess what he is not the sucker I am.

Usually, the salary hike we get on internal promotion is less than that of what a person gets if he comes to our company with level raise. Also, same for services/consultancy companies if you're not working on a good project then it's highly unlikely you'll be getting a good project anytime soon, atleast in most cases.
