  • Getting back to the basics. So time to do and update as I have a lot of new viewers and lots of my hammock info is buried in my video archive.
    Hope it gives some insight.
    Mandolin tune is me playing my Northfield mandolin. It is a tune by Mike Marshall called "Big Man From Syracuse."

      Shug has really been a big influence in my life he's turned me into a full time hammocker and he has shown me that it's perfectly normal to be a introvert and act strange 😆 plus I was lucky enough to see him a couple times at the circus shows.

    Thanks for the refresher. It's amazing how many variables can affect one's hammock comfort. Width, length, height, and angle of the hammock, the location, and even the fabric can make a difference. I've learned so much about all this watching your videos, and I'm proud to say after watching many videos and a couple of years of experimentation, I've almost perfected my outdoor lounging experience! Had to get this out - there is a budding singer/songwriter with a coarse sandpaper soul embedded within, waiting to spring from you with volcanic force - no, really ! Shug, just wanted you to know that for the first time in a while, my wife and I got together with my son and his family for some outdoor cooking. He and I hung our hammocks in his backyard, built a small fire in his fire pit, and lollygagged for a while. Right before we left to come home he said, "Dad, come out to the truck with me. I've got something to show you." So, I followed him out to the truck and he had a brand new "Lollygag Life" T-shirt for me. He had ordered one for himself and got me one too! Whoooooo buddy! We look double good because there's two of us sporting those shirts!! LOL! Maybe we'll see ya on the SHT one of these days. Best regards from Kansas.
    P.S. He and I have been hanging, separately, in our own backyards and doing some "in town" camping just because we got that itch! You have inspired us.

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For success read the Hammock Set-Up part of this carefully written by Warbonnet......www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/hammocks-101/
      "The BB/XLC/Traveler is designed to be laid in “off-center” so that your head is very close to the head end of the hammock while your feet are a lot farther away from the foot end. This allows the fabric under your legs to spread out properly when laying on the diagonal. To do this you’ll want to lay so that your eyes are aprox. even with the farthest side tieout (BB or XLC). Once you are laying in this correct spot you will then determine if you want the head/foot end higher or lower. Most people will want it setup so that when your eyes are even with the tieout that you are basically level/horizontal from hips to shoulders, so if your upper body seems too inclined or declined simply move the webbing up or down the tree trunk to adjust."

    I'm in my mid 40s, I brought my wife, then girlfriend, camping when we were 17. She has never slept in a tent since. She hates them. Yesterday it was a warm day, so I set my hammock up in the garden, and when it was empty she asked if she could get in. I was stunned. I got her in, got her comfortable, a few minutes later she was asleep. She was in it for over two hours. She loved it. I've been teaching young people how to camp and hammock for years, and that was my proudest moment!

    Down here in the south, make sure to NEVER hang your hammock on any trees covered with hairy vines! Those trees are covered in poison ivy, and you don't want that urushiol oil to come in contact with anything as that residue stays active for a while! It may limit where you can hang your hammock, but so be it. Love your videos!

    I have to say, for a backyard/backcountry shooter your home spun production value is pretty amazing. That opening shot in this was really cool...no idea how you did it. I have been dipping my toe in the water of this youtube thing with an older GoPro...because I like to be out in front of a trend, and I really think this youtube thing might catch on...
    ...anyway, I look at the stuff I am shooting in the backyard or when I'm out and about and comparatively it is like watching a monkey pounding a coconut against a rock trying to get it open.
    Your sense of humor still catches me off guard too. When you did that woodpecker impersonation I just about fell off my chair. I'm sure my neighbors heard me burst out laughing...and the closest one is a quarter mile away. That's right, not a Lol, a Bol, which is high praise.
    Also, the places I work are very remote so I get to camp out a week at a time. I am bringing a cheap Chillax hammock that I have had for a while but never really use. It's kind of short for me at just over 9 feet (the hammock, not me [I know how you think]), but using my new found Shugspertise I will give it a go. Making myself a simple underquilt today and bringing my usual camp gear so I'll have an air pad along. Looking forward to it.
    Thanks Shug.

      @@shugemery Agree. I've been putting off testing suspension improvements to my hammocks for the last couple of months. Had hand surgery in late Feb and haven't been able to manipulate until last week or so. Last time out my whoopie set up took a beating during a severe wind storm. Wind gusts reached 40 mph and my hammock and tarp got all tangled up before I could unfurl it. Toggles were almost impossible to release that night. Have couple knots to try. Hope we all can get out before long. In the meantime, your videos are a welcome respite. Thanks much many times over.

    Shug,
    I watched another hammocker and he recommended your TH-cam channel for learning about hammock camping. He was right on the money. Your You Tube videos are fantastic and loaded with humor, knowledge and wisdom. I watch your videos every night.
    My question is this. As throwing up a tent, ones looks for level ground. As you know the beauty of hammock camping is that level ground is not a requirement, however trees become an issue. I have a 12 foot Onewind double hammock. Just went out to set it up for the first time. Awesome. That is all I have to say. I think I will become a hammock camper from now on. However, the hammock, let's say faces north to south, the incline starts east and declines going west. I am 6 foot and a 250 pounder. The hammock was sagging low only inches from the ground. I had to raise the hammock ropes higher than my height, yet my Ridgeline upon sitting in the hammock becomes very tight. Can you give any advice in maintaining that 30 degree hang, also with your advise on the footend being higher? Thanks for your time in advice and knowledge. Keep up on those videos they are great and love watching and learning about my new style of camping in the outdoors. Whooooooooo buddy.

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Slopes and tree spacing are tricky. Sometimes I have a tight ridgeline on some hangs. You just have to push the suspension higher up the tree. As to footend higher...it varies for everyone but it slides me into my sweetspot and I don't creep towards the foot end. Enjoy the hammock quest.

  • @reaganl.5113
    @reaganl.5113 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I use steps to estimate space between trees. Most adults have a heel to toe measurement of 30-38 inches. If you approximate 36 inches (3ft) I use 4-5 steps (12-15ft) to get the right tree spacing trunk to trunk. This gets me a pre-selected set of trees before I start hanging the hammock. Less bumbling around getting my gear up.

      @@shugemery Have you ever considered a video on using the pull outs on a hammock? Is there a way to use them without them being a tripping hazard? Sometimes you see them used on the head and foot ends - sometimes in the center of the hammock. Is there a right or wrong way? Lazy ground sleeping with a semi-sore neck. Funny my jammock is always with me. Now & then it feels nice as a soft sheet on the shore. Sure is a handy device. A camp chair, a flag & more.
