If you read the book 'Little Girl Blue' you will, perhaps as I do view this video as the story of Karen's life. First mommy dearest says when Karen asked if she thought she should marry this man, her response was that Karen was old enough to decide for herself. Fast forward, Karen finds out that this man is a liar and desperately wants to call off the wedding and all of a sudden mommy dearest is back on her broom telling Karen that the invitations were out, people were coming from all over, and a small fortune had been spent (hmmm...wonder whose money?) and that Karen ***would*** go down that aisle, that she 'had made her bed and now had to lie in it'. Agnes Carpenter was a controlling domineering shrew and the book is toned down because little Richie doesn't want his family's image tarnished. We will never know the true story of Karen Carpenter. Thank you for posting this, wish it were better quality but not your fault, and just watching it knowing the back story makes it very very interesting.

I'm glad to know he did not receive anything from her will. Sounds like a total scoundrel. Never have trusted real estate developers!

Putting aside the details of Tom's character and personal situation for the moment; why couldn't they have adopted? They had enough money to do so. Plus the main point of raising children is being able to bring them up with good character and values enough to bring honor and a sense of accomplishment to the parents' lives-to impart something of yourself to them to make their lives successful and happy. Wow, these comments are so interesting. I never knew the story behind the beautiful voice of Karen Carpenter. No wonder why she struggled with illness that ended her life!!! The underline melancholy we are hearing in her voice is from her longing to be accepted by her family. I can very much relate to this. To me, Karen was one of the top three female vocalists that has ever been in my lifetime.I would have liked to see her play the drums. I understand that was her instratment. She was awesome beauty other than not having enough pounds. I don't know the " real" story. Whatever caused her to not like her body weight I thought was the issue. I'm adopted and I'm 17 years old. And my birth moms name was Karen Lee Carpenter. I love this singer because of her voice we look similar too though I wish this lady was still around so I could ask her if they are related in any way my aunts name is pat hunt.
It is sad she never found the love she deserved. In fairness, Richard said some of her rules about guys-like she would only date men who made as much money as she did, so she’d know they didn’t want her just for her money-cut her off from 99% of all potential men, one of who surely might have done so. I’m sure her health issues presented a challenge or strain to the marriage as well. When I hear “Goodbye to Love,” now it breaks my heart, because it sounds like her own personal autobiography. It was a hopeful day, but as with many marriages, it was not to be. But even now, 40 years later, Karen is perhaps the most beloved female vocalist if all time. Wherever she is, I hope the power of our love for her reaches her heart, for her fans still adore her.

Wow, these comments are so interesting. I never knew the story behind the beautiful voice of Karen Carpenter. No wonder why she struggled with illness that ended her life!!! To think of singing such perfect songs of love, and if it's true that her life and marriage was a pretend to a man who didn't really love her... that's the saddest story. That means every song she sang for us must have reminded her every time she sang, that her life/marriage was a secret living a lie, and that's what ultimately killed her, as it would have killed anyone!!! No wonder why some of those songs are so incredibly sad!!!
Whenever I listen to their songs like Solitaire or I Believe You, I cry. Her voice was so beautiful in these ballads. Yet you can hear her sincerity and pain at the same time. It still haunts me.
Her marriage came within the last few years of her life. Her most famous songs were recorded long before the marriage. The underline melancholy we are hearing in her voice is from her longing to be accepted by her family. I can very much relate to this. It's like I said years ago... the biggest heartbreak of my life wasnt from a lover....but from the ridicule, lack of acceptance and ultimate dissolve of my family. I know exactly what it's like to be controlled by a family of assholes.

To me, Karen was one of the top three female vocalists that has ever been in my lifetime.I would have liked to see her play the drums. I understand that was her instratment. She was awesome beauty other than not having enough pounds. I don't know the " real" story. Whatever caused her to not like her body weight I thought was the issue. I really hope and pray she knew the Good Lord before she died. What an amazing voice she had!!!!!!!!!
I had no idea she got married on August 31st, that's my parents' anniversary. Although they tied the knot in 1991, not 1980. But that's still a really cool coincidence!

It is sad she never found the love she deserved. In fairness, Richard said some of her rules about guys-like she would only date men who made as much money as she did, so she’d know they didn’t want her just for her money-cut her off from 99% of all potential men, one of who surely might have done so. I’m sure her health issues presented a challenge or strain to the marriage as well. When I hear “Goodbye to Love,” now it breaks my heart, because it sounds like her own personal autobiography. It was a hopeful day, but as with many marriages, it was not to be. But even now, 40 years later, Karen is perhaps the most beloved female vocalist if all time. Wherever she is, I hope the power of our love for her reaches her heart, for her fans still adore her.
Karen Carpenter's life is a cautionary tale. It is meant to teach and her voice is healing to whoever hears it.

I think one of the reasons Karen waited so long to marry was because she was told all her life to be afraid and that all men were after was her money, and now this? Her brother Richard and her family wouldn't let her fall in love and be happy with anyone without their interference and without the family's approval, Then they somehow approved of this jerk by the name of Tom Burris. Probably a friend of Herb Albert or Richard or the Family. Karen was more than ready at this point to be a happily married wife and mother and then this Carpenter family approved crumb bum came along and accidentally failed to inform Karen that he just had a vasectomy. Karen was devastated and she deserved so much better than this. I bet the honeymoon was over 2 hours after the wedding.
