You can 100% tell Karen was trying to fake being happy and excited about this wedding. I just wish she was able to find true love and have had the life she so desperately wanted and deserved.

Oh, I think he did. The one thing he had not considered was her rewriting her Will and giving him only a small portion while the rest went to her family. Thank goodness she did that! And she made sure he wasn't left homeless. But what a rat. In one of the biographies it is mentioned that he did show up at the funeral home and threw his wedding band into the casket. What a wicked, evil thing to do.
Karen learned just a few days before the wedding that Tom had had a vasectomy and didn't tell her and knew she wanted children. Karen wanted out, and her mother said: the plans are all made, it's too late to back down. So Karen did not want to be at this wedding. After the wedding, she learned that Tom was penniless and lied about that too. He also mistreated her horribly. Their marriage ended after about a year. She never recovered from this devastation, and her anorexia accelerated and she died about a year later.

Books, magazines, newspapers, and television shows all delve into the who's, what's, where's, and when's of celebrity life. Karen didn't escape that notoriety. Consequently, neither did others in her family, nor friends, business associates, and even simple acquaintances. So much of her life is revealed and captured on so many types of media that scrutinization only naturally followed. None of that demeans her professional work, recordings, or stage and television performances over the years. But it does show a different side of her life that those who only know her by her professional work are reluctant to acknowledge. She had many short lived relationships. She was human. She made mistakes. And she died from a Hyperosmolar Coma, not anorexia, with a blood sugar level of 1110 (no typo). No one is throwing rocks at Karen, but those that stood by and watched her erosion deserve what is thrown their way.
She could have gotten the help she needed I would say anytime 1978 or before. If only someone could have made her see that her brother and mother were the problem.

Fortunately, she shared her gifts with the world and her calm and soothing sounds continue to heal souls. She succumbed to her personal struggles in a sad way, but her passing brought attention to eating disorders and now others are able to get the help she couldn't access in her lifetime. So Karen's life, suffering and early death were not in vain after all.

Why do so many good young people with so much prosperity, success and bright futures end up sad, down on their luck, unloved, rejected by the world, unhealthy and even dead? It makes me want to cry for them. Karen had everything to live for, yet she did things to make herself die. Even Reverend Robert Schueller had so much success his whole life ended up broke, with his family fighting for control of his church. I know so many people who lost their jobs, the homes they worked to make comfortable for themselves, their belongings and their hope. A lot of them worked for years on the same job and now they can't afford food, let alone a mortgage. Praying relentlessly helps your spirit, but doesn't solve your every day troubles unless you are really lucky.
He was a decent and upstanding guy --- loved him -- who, I am sure if Karen told him she changed her mind, would have not hesitated to tell her to run like heck.

I think that had she lived longer, she could have gotten better help with her eating disorder. then she would still be with us today. there just was not any real knowledge of how to combat this sickness. here we are in 2015 and the throphy is much better.

Such a sad situation, Karen’s mother was little short of same, preferred her son to daughter, incredible how this can affect a person, some cope, some don’t. How people deal with this rejection/abuse is very individual and unfortunately Karen turned on herself to deal with the loss of the most basic love of a mother. I am fortunate to have had a loving mother, not always good at times, but incredible in comparison to others I know personally or about. Yesterday, Sinead O’Connor died, another woman with such an unfortunate, tragic relationship with her mother, and the effects resounded throughout her life. Bless Karen and all who go through these terrible trials in this life, maybe there is another one that is better
It’s almost unbelievable how beautiful she looked on her wedding day and just such a short time later, she left us. So sad. The whole solo album being shelved and this marriage being so bad for her. I think if one of those situations were different, might have made her fight harder to beat that terrible disease. If her solo album had been released with Richards blessing, I think that would have really done something for her. Terrible how Richard actually did release her solos the year after mother Agnus passed. Shoulda released it while Karen was still alive and proud of her new work.
At the time Karen passed away, she was still married. She made Tom sign a pre nup because she found out he didn't have any money and couldn't have children. He was only after her money. Yeah...everyone laughed at that nervous little laugh right when they were confirmed married, but that was...a hollow laugh. The kind of laugh you give when you get what you always wanted, but it's not at all what you wanted, you're trapped, and everyone you care about is watching you, still wanting the best. Probably redux here, but in a nutshell, she wanted kids, but found out Tom couldn't have any because of a vasectomy and he refused to reverse it; so she called her mother, Agnes, about it, but Agnes forced her to go through with the wedding because...Agnes was Agnes, and she frankly cared more about not wasting money than wasting her daughter. Try as she might, Karen just COULDN'T get herself to face it; ironically, if she had not starved herself, she might have realized this and made better decisions in life. Namely, not letting people push her around and forcer her to prostitute her talent for their benefit... Again, probably reduxing what everyone else has collectively already said.

If you read the book little girl blue the life of Karen Carpenter, she was very unhappy and an article in there said that she had a few bruises. Tom just threw his wedding ring in her casket. I suspect Agnes was jealous of Karen since her childhood. Probably teased her for being chubby as a child and it affected Karen. Agnes was no.means a saint. She bullied Harold too.
I think Agnes started starving Karen in the womb. She didn't want another baby after Richard and I think she tried to terminate the pregnancy, but failed. Karen was determined to be born. I think that's why Karen was premature. I don't think they were able to bond properly. It matters how you treat your kids, even before birth. They can tell when they are not loved and unwanted.

The truth is Burris told her a week before the ceremony he had a vasectomy. She wanted children. Karen Carpenter was never taught self love, so she learned self contempt. She was so gifted and so special. Fortunately, she shared her gifts with the world and her calm and soothing sounds continue to heal souls. She succumbed to her personal struggles in a sad way, but her passing brought attention to eating disorders and now others are able to get the help she couldn't access in her lifetime. So Karen's life, suffering and early death were not in vain after all.
It's unbelievable that in less than three years after this she would be gone...

Karen never would have even dated Tom Burris > if involved with Solo Album & Shows & becoming her own Healthy Woman, while Richard took off 1979! Then a 2nd Meteoric Rise would have launched “CARPENTERS” Together Again! How Sad it never happened while she was still with us.

I highly suggest that you read the book "Little Girl Blue: The Life of Karen Carpenter" by R. Schmidt... For all the smiles... Karen was acting the part of "bride"... she didn't want to be there.. wanted to call off the wedding... but her mother made her go through with it... due to the fact that she didn't want to suffer the embarrassment of calling off just because her future son-in-law had had a vasectomy... "He can have it reversed Karen... You made your bed.. now you have to lay in it!"

Why do so many good young people with so much prosperity, success and bright futures end up sad, down on their luck, unloved, rejected by the world, unhealthy and even dead? It makes me want to cry for them. Karen had everything to live for, yet she did things to make herself die. Even Reverend Robert Schueller had so much success his whole life ended up broke, with his family fighting for control of his church. I know so many people who lost their jobs, the homes they worked to make comfortable for themselves, their belongings and their hope. A lot of them worked for years on the same job and now they can't afford food, let alone a mortgage. Praying relentlessly helps your spirit, but doesn't solve your every day troubles unless you are really lucky.

I truly miss that voice. there can never be another Karen Carpenter. I think that had she lived longer, she could have gotten better help with her eating disorder. then she would still be with us today. there just was not any real knowledge of how to combat this sickness. here we are in 2015 and the throphy is much better.

It was her death that brought anorexia into the forefront. Most had never heard of it. That's why I say that her death has probably helped to save MILLIONS of lives. This young lady is an angel, I don't care what anybody says.

Such a sad situation, Karen’s mother was little short of same, preferred her son to daughter, incredible how this can affect a person, some cope, some don’t. How people deal with this rejection/abuse is very individual and unfortunately Karen turned on herself to deal with the loss of the most basic love of a mother. I am fortunate to have had a loving mother, not always good at times, but incredible in comparison to others I know personally or about. Yesterday, Sinead O’Connor died, another woman with such an unfortunate, tragic relationship with her mother, and the effects resounded throughout her life. Bless Karen and all who go through these terrible trials in this life, maybe there is another one that is better
It’s almost unbelievable how beautiful she looked on her wedding day and just such a short time later, she left us. So sad. The whole solo album being shelved and this marriage being so bad for her. I think if one of those situations were different, might have made her fight harder to beat that terrible disease. If her solo album had been released with Richards blessing, I think that would have really done something for her. Terrible how Richard actually did release her solos the year after mother Agnus passed. Shoulda released it while Karen was still alive and proud of her new work.
At the time Karen passed away, she was still married. She made Tom sign a pre nup because she found out he didn't have any money and couldn't have children. He was only after her money. He only got the Condo and it's belongings inside, no money.. soo sad Karen couldn't find a good man.. rest in peace 🌹 🕊 🙏

Yeah...everyone laughed at that nervous little laugh right when they were confirmed married, but that was...a hollow laugh. The kind of laugh you give when you get what you always wanted, but it's not at all what you wanted, you're trapped, and everyone you care about is watching you, still wanting the best.
Probably redux here, but in a nutshell, she wanted kids, but found out Tom couldn't have any because of a vasectomy and he refused to reverse it; so she called her mother, Agnes, about it, but Agnes forced her to go through with the wedding because...Agnes was Agnes, and she frankly cared more about not wasting money than wasting her daughter.
Try as she might, Karen just COULDN'T get herself to face it; ironically, if she had not starved herself, she might have realized this and made better decisions in life. Namely, not letting people push her around and forcer her to prostitute her talent for their benefit... Again, probably reduxing what everyone else has collectively already said.
Reversal of a vasectomy was unknown in 1980. And to my understanding she did not find out about the vasectomy until after they were wed.

I agree that Tom was an asshole all the way. He just wanted her for her money. If you read the book little girl blue the life of Karen Carpenter, she was very unhappy and an article in there said that she had a few bruises. Tom just threw his wedding ring in her casket. I went to the funeral, and after Tom left, I gave him the finger. Karen deserved a lot better. I hope she is in heaven waiting for his coming and then she would let him have it.

I think Richard and Harold really did love Karen, Richard to the best he could and Harold unconditionally, but he wasn't the alpha in his own marriage. Karen really showed her acting skills here.

I'd recommend reading the biography, Little Girl Blue: The Life of Karen Carpenter. The marriage was over before it started.
It is hard to think of words harsh enough or a punishment severe enough for a man who terribly mistreated Karen and made her deeply unhappy (and may well have exacerbated the other problems which led to her untimely death. As we know, she asked perfection of a quite imperfect world, and it was his duty and privilege to provide exactly that. He clearly failed abysmally.

Karen was in the battle if her life. Maybe that helped doom her marriage. I recall that when one experiences mental sickness marriage fails even when the other partner fights to keep the family together. Very tragic.

Very Tragic on many levels
I suspect Agnes was jealous of Karen since her childhood. Probably teased her for being chubby as a child and it affected Karen. Agnes was no.means a saint. She bullied Harold too.
I think Agnes started starving Karen in the womb. She didn't want another baby after Richard and I think she tried to terminate the pregnancy, but failed. Karen was determined to be born. I think that's why Karen was premature. I don't think they were able to bond properly. It matters how you treat your kids, even before birth. They can tell when they are not loved and unwanted.

After 41 yrs., it's still heartbreaking, crushing actually, to see this puke like imposter of a man using the alter of God & what should've been a true blessed even as the camouflage of an evil heart. The truth is Burris told her a week before the ceremony he had a vasectomy. She wanted children. She felt cheated and wanted to call off the wedding and her POS mother told her her Karen in her cold, creepy tone "You made your bed, now you have to lie in it." Then after the wedding she noticed she was going broke. The day she was going to finalize her divorce; was the day she died. How sad is that?

From going by the books like the Little Girl Blue biography it was more of a toss, then he just took off and left. It was described as not very pleasant like it was kind of angry too. I guess the only people who really know were there but Randy Schmidt interviewed a lot of witnesses who were present.

She dated him for 6 months and this was a hurry up and hastily planned wedding. Not untypical for 1980. Looks to me like this was planned in a space of a short time...again, not untypical for that time -- there are lots of couples who planned a large wedding in a brief period of time.
Karen needed to turn around and run, at the last minute. Simply vanish. Let her mother puzzle it out.
