What is the Cycle of Anxiety?

  • When left untreated and unaddressed, anxiety has a tendency to grow. This is explained by the cycle of anxiety.
When the uncomfortable symptoms of anxiety feel like too much, one of the simplest ways to feel better is avoidance. This means avoiding the source of anxiety, or numbing the uncomfortable feelings. The good news is, avoidance works... for a little bit. The bad news is, the relief that avoidance brings is temporary, and the anxiety tends to come back worse than before.

    Cycle of Avoidance or Anxiety
    1) Anxiety - when first confronted with the issue
    2) Avoidance - emotional or physical
    3) Short Term Relief Anxiety
    4) Long Term Anxiety Growth
Break the cycle by facing your fears and brain learns the opposite experience.

    • @babybunnie8669

@@perkyharvester5182 How I know what it is, is by the reaction I get inside my body and mind when the situation arises for what I need to face in my life. It is facing issues outside of the 'comfort zone" Are you afraid of heights? Long term life long relationships? attending school full time? Going the the doctors and only going when things get really bad in life? You know the fear by not wanting to face the issue and saying "I can't do it" or possibly saying " I will do it when an emergency happens or need to".
Sometimes it comes from the childhood trauma or experiences in life. People dream more often of the circumstances that will change their life for the good but don't put the dream into reality. Being real and honest with oneself is not easy. Finding practical steps that is not within comfort is when I know what it is.

So i cry because idk how to deal with all the stress and my muscles are so tense i cry more. Anxiety hits me very hard, school is a whole different story. I'm scared that i get a 4, i literally cry. NON-STOP and my hw i do it so quick...Outside it looks like I have the BEST life, but in the inside...I have the worst...I always ask my mom if she has the house keys, cuz I dont wanna be locked outside. When she wants to go outside...cuz of corona we are no allowed to be more than 2 people, but we go out as 5, so I split up with my friend...I-...I wanna...have a normal life...like my friend! She always has the best...and brags to me...I'm scared that we are gonna lose money..and then end up homeless...my father once said "what about rent?" And I.. started crying...I always think negative...And that gives me anxiety...They say "GO FOR IT!" But i cant! I CAN'T DO THAT! Dont put pressure on me!...And i- I dont like myself...insecurities...its hard to live, to even breathe! I calm myself with music...Sometimes online friends do more than people around you! Try propranolol (google it) and get a therapist (you might want to try 5-10 therapists before you find the one). Also, find others with similar fears and talk about it. You might want to find someone who doesn’t have these fears and learn from them. You are in control of your brain 🧠

For me it's the fact that I don't know anyone and I don't want to go to school because I know how terrible I feel there. But I also know that I need to get credits in and courses done. It's even harder because I go to a more flexible school where I only have to be there 3/5 of the week, but I know that if I just say "oh I'll just go tomorrow" I never will... The cycle of anxiety is ruthless.

This so important for people need to know. Yes healthy fear is good of life threatening things.
Also good to know subconscious programming is what causes anxiety to cease re-ocurring. I used 3 step to teach my brain to release anxiety triggers from re-ocurring. You can face your fears just in the mind...with 3 steps. Brain starts to learn it and can be easily used anytime to start eliminating anxiety triggers.

Very nice video. Be careful what you feed your mind. To feel better reduce negative thoughts and overthinking. Avoid comparing with others, reduce negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives relief from stress-anxiety. To relax sit on a chair or lie down, neck straight, eyes closed, avoid moving too much and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Never meditate with expectations but with awareness. Don’t fight your thoughts. With daily practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Observe your breath sensations before sleep, in college, at work, taking a walk, etc.etc. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a better life. Best wishes--Counsellor.

Great in theory, but...Try having anxiety that goes much deeper than just sweating or trembling. When you can't think straight during a panic attack your body freezes, and turns into extreme stomach cramps and or diarrhea. I've lived with extreme anxiety for years before, and after imodium advanced hit the market taking it daily. I faced my fears for decades, and it continued to get worse. Not all anxiety is the same, and I'm tired of these quick fix anxiety videos all over TH-cam. Nothing new, and nothing original here

Hi, Kevin. I understand exactly where you come from. Unfortunately, my anxiety makes me very rapidly faint and or vomit. So, as you can imagine, facing my main triggers head-on is extremely difficult, and counterproductive. it'll only make you worse. However, he had the answer at the end of the video. You have to introduce yourself to a smaller version of your fear. For example, if you are afraid of needles, start off by just looking at a still image of a needle. If that to much practice with somebody just saying the word needle. Then use all of your Anxiety tools such as mindfulness to calm yourself. Once you are then confident with that first small step, you can move onto another step, slowly building up. It may take many months to work through 10s if not hundreds of small steps until you can confidently face your major trigger. It's also worth keeping a journal so you can take note of any positives when you experience panic. For example, most people come away from a panic attack thinking how awful it was. Yet, many forget that actually, even though you thought you were going to die, you didn't. Keeping a journal forces you to think positively and record those positive thoughts about even the worst experiences.

Thank you! This is exactly what I have been thinking about. I'm so sick of doctors & professionals saying the same generic line that going to a quiet room to deal with a panic attack is avoidance. I feel like it is such a lazy answer when a dr does not know how to help or treat a patient who has severe anxiety & panic attacks. There is no "one size fits all" solution, everyone is different. Some of these health professionals need to smarten up and actually listen.

What about a fear like one I have: I’m terrified at work of customers asking me questions b/c if I can’t answer it, I don’t know who to refer them to, and/or if they don’t like my answer(meaning they don’t like the fact I’m simply relaying), etc., they’ll get angry at me. I’ve of course had more than plenty of times where that hasn’t happened, but despite that, I’m still often a little or very terrified whenever a customer asks me a question. It’s part of why I took the job I have(I grab items for online pickup orders at a grocery store). Because on top of being better paced, the customer interaction is significantly less than say a cashier.

Are there other types of emotional avoidance, a.k.a. 'numbing', that don't involve substance use? Most of the examples I hear about are people using substances like alcohol or drugs to 'make them feel okay', but I wonder if there are cognitive methods people use as maladaptive coping strategies.

The instant cure for anxiety is to understand the fact that there are infinite amount of possible outcomes in this universe and our brain only thinks of a handful . A bad outcome can become the means of a good outcome in the future. Just like that a good outcome can become the means of a bad outcome. For example, you lost your job (bad thing). But then you got a new job which is better ( bad thing led to a good outcome.) It's an endless cycle. So just go with the flow and don't think about it . 😄 Goodluck.

This is very much me. I'm having a lot, A LOT of anxiety right now to the point where I feel helpless. I feel like there's no escape. So much so that what I initially thought I wanted I don't know if I want that anymore. How do I know what I actually want compared to anxiety that tricks me?
I don't know what to do, I have to decide whether to stay home and do university or leave home and go to a different university with accommodation. But the main thing isn't even University I just think that going to another place may make me feel less lonely as I'll be forced to meet new people. I have people back home but I still feel lonely. I don't know what to do it ain't really about university it's more to do with the freedom of being able to socialise better. But I have no idea if moving will make my life better, worse or it won't be that much different to staying home. Time is running out, and I feel helpless. I often think of suicide cos the feeling is sooo much. I've just done my first year ALL online cos of covid and it was so boring and bad. I'm so alone. I did my first year at home cos I thought if by the end of the year things get better we'll actually have a normal first year and if I like it I can't stay home. But that didn't happen we just stayed online. No one can help me, and I feel helpless. I don't know what to do.
If I feel like I make the wrong decision i.e. what choice has the best outcome? And choosing wrong will result in me being more depressed and lonely which I don't want.
I'm breaking down and I'm lost.

I know its been 5 months since you posted this comment, but I wanted to let you know as strongly as I can, that you are not alone. That sounds like an empty cliche but it is nonetheless true. If you do some more research into anxiety, you will discover that it is by far the most common psychological issue in the western world. Knowing that doesn't instantly stop the loneliness, depression, dark thoughts and frequent confusion. What it can do though, is to allow you to begin to see that your not a rare case of being 'broken' or defective in any way. You are, in fact, obviously a person who has high standards and good expectations for yourself and others and that is actually the basis of a fine person. When I feel bad, I try to slow down in my head and get outdoors and try to sit quietly and actually see the world and other people rather than just look at them. This gives me a better chance of showing myself that I'm "ok normal crazy" like so many, many others. I find this usually gives me time out from my self detracting thoughts and maximises the chance to chill out in my own head space.

I helped him/her write song of his/her life and simply had fun with it... reached the deepest feelings I had.... I set the bar high! but I was brutally beaten down by life and people in it! have hard time trusting anyone! now how does one deal with that? I take chances and each time something doesn't go my way I feel as if one struck a dagger in my chest yet I endure the pain and go on as if nothing ever happened :( well thats my life :( sometimes people even think im crazy simply because I can take so much but pain is there and I ought to live with it and forgive others just to move forward and focus on life and days that matter... I do the unthinkable and succeed without ever caring to take credit for it.. I set the bar and it feels like each and every time I battle myself! now when you are so sick good people like to look for your weak sides and explore your weakness to humiliate you etc.. this is what real life looks like! there is no medication that will ever help you with anxiety you just have to find the balance and set the level low just so next time you attempt whatever you leave yourself room to beat it and not over impress everyone else....

What therapies like CBT get wrong, demonstrated by a simple recipe for happiness.
Essential to all psychotherapies is the principle that core affect (feeling bad or good) is dependent upon restructuring what one thinks about, or the ‘normative’ aspects of experience. However, for the field of affective neuroscience, core affect is instead dependent upon ‘how’ one thinks, or the ‘abstract’ aspects of experience. If this is true, then the personal control of positive affect can effectively bypass psycho-therapeutic interventions and make ‘happiness’ simply a matter of rearranging abstract aspects of one’s perceptual world. The virtue of this approach is its simplicity, predictive power, and testability, so it has a low shelf life if wrong. An exemplar of this is a ‘recipe for happiness’ proposed below.
In affective neuroscience, it is well known that behaviors that involve continuous high and positive act/outcome discrepancy (gaming, gambling, creative work) correspond to elevated dopaminergic activity and a feeling of arousal, but not pleasure. However, for many individuals engaging in similar activity, a feeling of pleasure is also reported, but only when their covert musculature is inactive (i.e., a state or rest). Because relaxation activates opioid systems, and tension inhibits them, it is postulated that dopaminergic activity stimulates opioid activity, but only during resting states.
This hypothesis can be easily tested and is described in greater detail below. If correct, it will demonstrate for the first time that elevated and sustained arousal and pleasure, or ‘eudaemonia’ or ‘happiness’ can be induced easily through simple modifications of abstract perceptual properties of behavior that anyone can easily do throughout the day.
THE CONTINGENCY MANAGEMENT OF POSITIVE AFFECT
    AFFECT AND MOTIVATION
Opioid and dopamine systems represent bundles of neurons or ‘nuclei’ in the mid brain that are respectively responsible for the affective states of pleasure and attentive arousal, and sub-serve the neural processes that govern motivation.
OPIOID AND DOPAMINE SYSTEMS ARE ACTIVATED BY DIFFERENT STIMULI EITHER VIRTUAL (COGNITIVE) OR REAL
Eating and drinking, having sex, and relaxing or resting all activate opioid systems, whereas the anticipation or experience of positive act-outcome discrepancy (or positive surprises or meaning) activate dopamine systems.
OPIOID AND DOPAMINE SYSTEMS CAN CO-ACTIVATE EACH OTHER
Taking our pleasures increases our attentive arousal, and increasing our attentive arousal accentuates our pleasure. If these systems are concurrently activated both are accentuated or affectively ‘bootstrapped’, as both pleasure and attentive arousal will be higher due to their synergistic effects.
OPIOID AND DOPAMINE SYSTEMS CAN BE CO-ACTIVATED THROUGH THE ARRANGEMENT OF SPECIFIC ACT-OUTCOME EXPECTANCIES OR RESPONSE CONTINGENCIES
As characterized by the well documented ‘flow response’ (pp.82-86), consistently applied contingencies that elicit pleasurable resting states and consistent attentive arousal result in self-reports of heightened pleasure and energy. This emotional experience can be easily replicated by simultaneously applied contingencies that elicit rest (mindfulness protocols) and meaning (imminent productive behavior and its uniform positive implications). To achieve complete rest and accentuate positive affect, these contingencies must be applied for periods of at least a half hour or more. Just as one sets meditative sessions to last for a set time period and frequency to be effective, so mindfulness and meaning sessions must be similarly arranged, with cumulative sessions if possible charted to provide proper feedback of efficacy. Finally, the intensity of positive affect will scale to the importance or salience of moment to moment meaningful behavior, with the more meaningful the task the higher the pleasurable affect.
    IMPLICATIONS
Affect is as much an aspect of how information is arranged as what information is, or the abstract rather than normative properties of behavior. It follows that as a positively affective state, happiness is not just a product of what we think, but how we think, and derives not only from our pleasures but also from our incentives. Positive incentives can accentuate those very pleasures that we wish to maximize, and conversely, associated pleasure will increase the ‘appetitive value’ or ‘liking’ of incentives (or in other words, increase the value of productive work), and all sustained by simple choices within our grasp, as is ultimately happiness itself.
I offer a more detailed explanation in pp. 47-52, and pp 82-86 of my open source book on the neuroscience of resting states, ‘The Book of Rest’, linked below.

That may work dandy for social anxiety and GAD, even the OCD, but I can't ever imagine it working on something like somatic symptom disorder. If someone say has a sinus headache and they are consumed by fear its tumor, how does a therapist "safely" expose them to the trigger? By injecting them smaller doses of nitroglycerine? Smacking them around their nose? Making them sniff pepper?
Or lets say a person has palpitations, and are scared it's a dangerous arrhythmia? How does a therapist expose one to that? CBT is a wonderfully useful and versatile, but by no means a cure all!

I overcame it when I did exactly the opposite of what I thought I should do, I went running, even though I was very scared, I didn’t die so I kept doing it. I even had a panic attack while hiking at high altitude and thought I would die, I didn’t and so I guess my subconscious learned that there was no threat and no problem. It’s not easy but unfortunately this was the only way to overcome this for me.
