On May 1, 1969, Fred Rogers was allowed to testify at the Senate's Subcommittee on Communications to secure funding for his series "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood". The hardened chairman of the committee Senator John O. Pastore of Rhode Island, who supported drastic PBS budget cuts and was unfamiliar with Rogers' work, began Roger's testimony being visibly coarse and impatient with the children television presenter. However, he was so moved by Rogers' passionate, yet soft toned testimony about the need for social and emotional education of America's children that public, non-commercial television provides, that he unexpectedly rethinked his position, ending the hearing saying "Looks like you just earned the $20 million!"

The coolest part of this is you can tell the Senator has his mind changed. We need politicians freethinking like this, not simply aligned with a party's agenda.
Sadly can’t be like that anymore because it’s now an us vs them mentality and both sides think like this now.
@@christopherh4891 His "opinion" would have already been bought before he stepped foot in the court. The us vs them is all just a smokescreen for how it really works, corporations and the elite pay for their votes/decisions. I can't tell you how many times a Republican CEO has "donated" to a Democratic politician because the CEO works in entertainment and his business was going to have to pay more in taxes because of a possible new tax law being pushed by a Republican opponent, or vice versa.
And their reasoning would be something like, "Sorry, Mr. Rogers but you're talking to adults here not children so we can't help you. We have adult problems to handle not kid problems, like yours. We wish you luck though, we mean that. 😉" and then everyone in the audience claps

Nah you are free to do so, he would have valued you expressing your opinion! There's just really nothing negative to say. I'm sure there's someone out there with a story of him being mean or rude, but dude frequently admitted he has bad days and gets in foul moods too, it's just human.

There are a couple of wonderful people in this video. Fred Rogers is his usual beautiful self. And Senator Pastore shows a transformation you'd be hard pressed to get out of anyone in public these days. We'll never have another Mr. Rogers, but I'd be satisfied with a few more Senator Pastores in government.
Agreed. Sadly, the days of a functional government led by open minded politicians are long gone. Forget giving $20 million to children's television. These days, it's more like $20 BILLION given to defense contractors and corporations. If Mr. Rogers were alive today and gave this same thoughtful and compassionate speech to Congress, they would laugh in his face.

This plays out like a movie. I often feel impatient with the way Fred Rogers speaks, despite watching his show religiously as a child. But there's this weird power and honesty in the *way* he speaks that draws you in, and compells you to listen.
I think it’s because it’s like he takes a small breath before each word he speaks. So it makes you wondering what he’s going to say next. It’s like “it draws you in” like you said haha
I always feel when people talk slowly like Rogers that it shows they truly value what they are saying.

Im convinced Mr. Rogers is actually the main protagonist and everyone else was living in his world. Explains why the world got worse since his death.
Maybe it's me , but when the senator says "I think its wonderful " 2x and then cuts the joke of the 20 million dollars he had to either cut a joke or weep . Mr Rogers could evoke such beauty and power with words . Terrific human being . I still think lady Elaine from his show needed a nose job I still have nightmares and I'm 52. 😂

Even nearing my golden years, anything Mr Fred Rogers has ever said still makes me stop and reconnect with my inner child. A wounded inner child that needs compassion, and Mr Rogers has the strength and power to show me how to get back in control of my anxieties.
Anyone with any type of anxiety can benefit from Mr Rogers' wisdom.

No human could fake that level of sincerity. That's the secret, that's the "trick", the only way to come off like that is to actually be the person who would say things like that, to be that person every day, at work or at home. Damn I can’t stop rewatching him, what a great example of how to communicate one’s message, what an amazing person to choose for a role model, I’ll try to spread that to everyone I know, hopefully we can all heed the words of this song and instead of venting anger just try to stay in control.

mr rogers was the closest you can get to what jesus is described as, just an all around good man who truly "love(s) one another as i have loved you" (gods commandment over the other ten)he genuinely cared about each individual and found them special, and made sure they understood their self worth from their beginnings.

I think I know why Mr Rogers came when he did. It's going to take a lot of people to figure out how to handle the crises that we are going through as a species. Mr Rogers came before things started heating up, both literally and figuratively, in order to give us the tools to do that. It's up to us whether or not we take them.

I remeber laying in my room watching his show and be at ease. Whatever was going on in my life it would shut off The moment mr Rodgers came on tv and just make me feel at peace.

I can’t believe they’ve cancelled all his shows , this man was a godsend and todays society thinks what he says is evil , I think people need to take a hard long look in the mirror.

Mr. Rogers became undeniable in his goodness, his rightness. He speaks to the child in all of us.
What do you do with the love that you feel?
Mr. Rodgers was especially important to me, because when I was 18 months old I fell 6 inches and broke my leg. There was something badly wrong with my tibia (long story) and I would spend the next year and a half in a hip spike (A cast the starts at your hips and runs down your leg to your foot) going through painful surgery after painful surgery. Eventually, about a week after my 3rd birthday my leg was amputated. I was fitted with a prosthetic leg and learned to walk, run and play. I never could run very fast, but other than that, I didn't have many limitations that my friends didn't have.
I remember nothing of the trauma I went through but it still had an effect on me. It was Mr. Rodgers who was a huge factor in my recovery. He meant a lot to me.
He was himself 24/7 not acting like a nice person or behaving like a righteous person. That's the way he naturally was. A true and honest person. Where boys and girls were taught alike. how to be true and honest.
Man how could anyone dislike this.
Congress needs a good pep talk like this today, but with current issues.

I grew up with Mister Rogers too. What a wonderful person he was. I'd like to think, if I may say, that many of the good parts of me are there because of him. Listening to him speak, he inadvertently reminds us of the bad parts as well, and that's a good thing. There will never be another like him, and the world today proves that a kind and gentle soul like his is dearly missed. I hope more people get to know him as time goes on! :)

Its absolutely amazing to see Mr Pastore go from screaming "Shut Up" to the audience and being hateful to Fred, to him lowering his tone and sounding almost childlike with Fred. Fred used his power of persuasion in one of his finest hours!

My sister and I would sneak to watch his show if Dad was home. He had a calming effects on us.....until Dad came home.
This is a true representation of what America should be working towards together and United. God bless America and God bless the United States.
Nearly all of the school shooters for the last few years have come from fatherless homes and homes with zero guidance with respect to their inner emotional turmoil. These kids could’ve used a Mr. Rogers in their lives and that’s not an exaggeration or minimizing any of the tragedy that has occurred, I think it is the truth.
