Two videos so close together. You're spoiling us!
That's a great selection of albums. For once I know all the artists, albeit there are a few albums I haven't heard. The main thing I took from this is how many great records I have that I haven't played in a decade, or more.
I loved Back Door. I met Colin many times as he came from the same town that I was born, and still live in. He used to play every weekend at a local pub, with his band, Bradawl, which featured another local legend, Lloyd Watson.
I'm a huge fan of Fanny too. I even have a couple of Barbra Streisand albums they played on.
And I want to do a third - a quick thread response for Rob Ison - you'll soon be sick of the sight of me if you are not already!
So many great records not played for so long, tell me about it. In many ways I miss the early days of my youth when I had a lot less in the collection and each record would get played a lot - nowadays then can often get a couple of plays and then disappear into the racks - it's ridiculous really. I'm the same with books - there are so many would love to reread, but I keep adding new ones to the collection.
Loved the first Back Door album, so I'm hoping the 2nd is up to the same standard - Colin is a superb bass player.
All the best... Pete
Good evening Pete. I seem to remember something about Gary Holton. Didn't he have a small part in the movie Quadrophenia? That McLaughlin is one of my favorites from him. As you already know. His playing is extraordinary. Ah. I did like the Monkees Headquarters. But Pisces, Aquarius. Cap & Jones is their best. In my humble opinion that is. {smile} I would say that you did excellent at the fairs. Thank you for sharing them Pete. The best in the New Year to you. Look forward to sharing and corresponding more~
Rob/Boston
Hi Rob, Gary Holton could well have been in Quadrophenia - I'll have to check. That first McLaughlin is highly rated by all it seems - looking forward to that one. You could very well be right about your evaluation of the Monkees. I need to get a copy of Head sometime (and give the movie a watch too). It was a really productive couple of weeks at the two fairs indeed. I hope you had a great Christmas, and wishing you all the very best for 2024.
Hello Pete - quite the assortment of fair finds! The opening track on that Leon Russell album is really great--"Stranger in a Strange Land." The Lol Coxhill album is a trip, a real smorgasbord. The Steppenwolf surprisingly finds them getting into a bit of very weird free-form jamming unlike anything on their other records.
I did go a bit mad at the fairs this last couple of weeks, but you have to take the chance to pick up some decent records when it's presented to you. I gave the Coxhill a spin last night - as you say quite a smorgasbord, I can't say that I enjoyed it a lot, but it warrants a couple of more listens I think. The Steppenwolf sounds really good from your description - looking forward to that one. Hope you had a great Christmas, and all the very best for 2024 (when we'll be expecting a new album from you)... Pete
Lovely collection of goodies there. Revisited a couple of those very recently. McLaughlin, Dregs, Mayall
Love Frank Marino. Have all his stuff. Underrated IMo
Struggle with back Door. Got that Lp at a record fair a while back. Couldn’t get into it I’m afraid.
Great haul my friend, Chris (The Vinyl Orchard)
Thanks Chris, it definitely was a good haul this last couple of weeks. I agree about Marino - this will be my 3rd release by him. He deserves a better rep, and not just the Hendrix clone comments. I did enjoy the first Back Door album so I'm hoping to enjoy this one too. I thought you'd enjoy the McLaughlin and Dregs. I've heard particularly good things about the McLaughlin. Hope you had a good Christmas Chris, and I wish you all the very best for the New Year... Pete
Hi Pete - great to see Back Door - not for the faint hearted , the debut album is amazing and I also have Activate which was produced by Carl Palmer . Some great picks and like the Paul Fenton story . Thanks
Thanks Graham. If the Back Door album is as good as the first I'm going to enjoy it very much. I didn't realise Paul was the drummer with Carmen until I checked him out when I got home - their Fandangos in Space is an excellent album. I'd have asked him about that if I'd known at the time. All the best... Pete
Blimey that's a stack Pete! Some decent looking UK-related jazz albums there. First Base is on my want list (as are Frumpy). Both those Graham Parker albums are great. Nice Nic Jones find for half price. Enjoy spinning all of those...cheers Dale
Did go a bit mad there Dale, but as you know if the opportunity is there then you have to take it 😁. I was particularly glad to get the Nic Jones. It'd been there for months, but couldn't resist it at half price. Cheers...Pete
Hey Pete. Great Babe Ruth, Leon Russel. By the way, Hood and Hawkins are superb Muscle Shoals rhythm session players. They’ve backed everybody who’s ever recorded in those Alabama studios. Two of the best Graham Parker albums. Been trying to find Fanny albums for awhile now, no luck so far. I must play Zip Gun again. Fantastic finds and at budget prices to boot.
Hi Jack. It was really a productive time at the record fairs this holiday season - the half-price deal helped too. That's I think the first Fanny album I've come across in the wild. It's good but it could have benefitted from a harder edge from the production. Zip Gun is usually considered their weakest album, but I thought it, on the whole, was a decent album. Cheers... Pete
Fine discoveries, for my part I found this Steppenwolf 10 months ago and was very agreably surprised by this early prestation more various than what they did after.
I search also this Edgar Winter but never saw it ,nor that T.Rex the only one I miss ,T.Rex,Creedence and Janis Joplin were my first teenage discoverings and even I heard after other kinds of music I still listen them time to time with great pleasure.
Hi Gerard, I'm looking forward to giving the Steppenwolf a listen - heard good things about it - especially the 21 minute version of The Pusher. T Rex, Creedance & Janis... that's a good start to anyone's musical listening journey. The albums you start off with I find always remain as big favourites through the years - I think it helps that you played them a lot more in those days and subsequently got to know them better than later purchases when your collection is bigger and each album doesn't tend to get played as much.
Really nice haul Pete, I could barely keep up!.
Lots of quality looking stuff there.
Heavy Metal Kids is an interesting one.Gary Holtons' band..I loved Auf Weidersein Pet back in the day..
Some interesting Jazz titles.
Reading Festival 1973 will be an interesting listen.
Your excitement was palpable, hence you couldn't speak..😅..
I really like Leon Russell, he covers well but wrote some decent songs too.
I remember Frankenstein from a compilation album of my brother's back in the day..heavy stuff.
I know of Nic Jones, but unfamiliar with his stuff..i'm aware it will definitely be in my wheelhouse.
Monkees are always a fun listen..Pisces, Aquarius & Jones Ltd is a good one.
Happy new year ( again )🎉
Hi Rob, It really was a productive period!
The Heavy Metal Kids is a really good 70s hard rock band if you like that kind of stuff - well pleased with it.
You shouldn't make fun of an old man and his speech problems! I can't even blame it on false teeth 🤣.
Only know Leon Russell as a sideman, so I'm looking forward to see what he produces as band leader.
Frankenstein is the only track I think I've ever heard by Edgar Winter (from the OGWT performance) - hope the rest is up to that standard.
Was so pleased he'd reduced the Nic Jones LP by half - been eyeing it up for months but it was just a bit too expensive.
Love the Monkees - great pop fun.
All the best... off to do my vinyl tag video - look forward to seeing yours... Pete
Many interesting pickups Pete! I have Hapless Child by Mantler (with Wyatt and Rypdal on the same album, it was a must explore), and should explore more. Found the Dixie Dregs album on a Japanese release CD this fall, but need to explore it still. I have found some nice used albums this year I am very happy about, but nothing that comes near your discoveries. A version of King Kong certainly is a draw to attention for Babe Ruth. (There is an excellent Tasavallan live version on TH-cam with great audio from not quite 20 years ago). I also need a diet. Too many sweets in the stocking. Take care, Richard
Hapless Chikd is a great album. I have a live album by Mantler where he dies some of the songs off it. The band on the live album is made up of Rick Fenn on guitar, Don Preston on synths, John Greaves on bass, Nick Mason on drums, and Jack Bruce on bass. Very good, but I prefer Wyatt singing those songs as his vocals seem to fit the weird stories so much better. So we'll both have the same new year's resolution 😂
Hi Pete, i like the variety of Vinyl Lps that you have purchased, i agree with the Babe Ruth album is their best album...i am friends with both Helen and Paul and they are lovely people, i have been trying to get to Helens shop in Grange but not got there yet. i hope you have a good New Year.
Thanks Alex. I'm not sure I've heard ant other Babe Ruth albums, but played that first one last night and it was excellent - a really worthwhile purchase. Helen and Paul were indeed really nice and friendly, Getting to their shop might be a bit difficult, but I hope they come to Windermere again. I didn't realise at the time that Paul had been the drummer with Carmen so I'd like to ask him about that. All the very best for 2024... Pete
@@soundsfromthewestcoast9939 Thanks Pete, it is worth watching on TH-cam footage of Carmen in concert from 1973 especially Paul's drumming because he had to learn a different pattern of drumming that was different compared to when he was in Christie. Also watch on TH-cam watch Johnny Wakelin In Zaire (1976) you will also recognize the drummer!I wish you all the best for 2024 as well. Alex
Hi Pete.
Double record fair action!
Might have been me showing Lol Coxhill as I did so in my recent Canterbury connected video. I don’t have Ear Of The Beholder but do need it. £7 is a fantastic price for a Dandelion label original. I guess you know Joni Mitchell’s song ‘For Free’ is about Lol Coxhill?
The Nic Jones album is a rare find.
Need to get some Back Door. I found a copy of their first a while back in a shop in Scarborough, was about to buy it but spotted a deep scratch on one track. Oh well, the search goes on.
Great line up on that John McLaughlin album. Love Tony Oxley.
Good luck with the New Year diet. After an overload of turkey, pork and chicken I resorted to fish fingers this evening. All the best for 2024!
Hi John, a very productive couple of weeks with the record fairs, thankfully though for my wallet the next ones won't be until February.
Played the Coxhill last night - don't really know what to make of it, I think it'll need a replay.
Was very pleased to find the Nic Jones. He's had it for months but it wasn't until the price dropped by half that I jumped on it. Given his reputation in the folk world I don't know why his albums (with the exception of his last Penguin Eggs) have not been reissued. I do remember my friend Nick who ran a record shop in Manchester, telling me of some guy who owns the rights to a lot of classic folk albums and just sits on them - maybe Nic Jones is one of those artists effected.
The first Back Door album is well worth getting - hopefully the 2nd is up to the same standard.
I cooked a gammon joint for my Christmas meal and that's seen me though 4 more meals! Hopefully the weather will improve sometime and I can get out and walk off some of this extra weight.
Best wishes for the New Year... Pete
I’ve also heard that about the fella who owns the rights to lots of great UK folk recordings. Apparently when a re-issue of the Watersons Bright Phoebus came out he blocked it and it was withdrawn.
@@baggyhi-fi8628 I know that Bob Fox and Stu Luckley had to rerecord their album in order to get it released on CD. Luckily I had both their albums on vinyl already. Don't understand what advantage there is to just sitting on the rights and not rereleasing the albums.
curious to hear what you think of the Claypool / Lennon. I've had it for years its great! nice scores as usual, thx for sharing. cheers!
Thank you! I have the other 2 Claypool / Lennon releases which I love, so I expect this one to be up there with them. I don't know why it's taken so long for me to add it to the collection. Cheers... Pete
