  • We talk about terraforming, ways to create maps, support for legacy hand drawn maps and some of the possibilities for planes as map makers and modders get more familiar with the systems.

I think that could easily be solved by adding symbols next to the fort/army/flag indicator to tell at a glance what terrain it is.

Yeah this could be done ingame by illwinter; or could be done by mapmakers reasonably quickly (compared to actually redrawing the map). Good idea @@coldmossonarock7743

@@LucidTacticsOnly drawback i can think of is that it would be pretty underwhelming to sink an entire damn province and have only a simple icon on the map to show for it. But maybe it could be reasoned as you being just a commander looking at a now dated old map. Maybe mapmakers could even play with that concept adding a desk with cartography instruments in the background.

Using Illwinter graphics for provinces that have been changed by terraforming seems like an ok solution for old maps, and it will have the advantage that it is easy to see that a province have been terraformed.

I love that Illwinter is adding more options and tools for people to get creative with how they use the system.
As someone who has messed with making Dom 5 maps in the past, I'd love to port some old hand drawn maps or create some new ones. The addition of planes makes me super excited for the possibilities.
I see many of the land province layers (like all wasteland) still have lakes as lakes. Do you happen to know if lakes will always be lakes on these maps?

19:00 yea, it's called Planar Australia and you can see it in Risk games. I think one of the things you can do to mitigate the risk is by never putting Thrones in their own plane and always keeping thrones on the base map layer. Maybe an underground strength 1 throne or two to balance out thrones in water provinces. It may also be a good idea to never have thrones near planar connections to avoid people just holding Siam from their planar australia.
A thought, if you can use magic to turn on or off connections to planes you could stock planes with an AI producing tons and tons of demons or undead or something which then emerge after a plane is opened this could create a risk vs reward or alternate source of attack as those "AI Owned" provinces which were your neighbors 2 turns ago could be fair game.
Edit: Another thought, if you can isolate Globals per plane that could allow you to do things like hold a plane and cast Illwinter on it and avoid a Vaettiheim situation.

  • @battlemode
    @battlemode 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I'm hoping the new map options will encourage more liberal, tolerant and adventurous MP gamers to start using the Illwinter maps again instead of MapNuke. I do love MapNuke for what it does, obviously essential for tournaments etc, but I prefer games on less balanced maps, it adds an extra element to diplo IMO. Definitely better for gaming groups than playing with randoms though.

@@EgorIvlev In custom maps, there's no reason why you couldn't make underwater be its own plane. However, I think that would be worse than the current implementation as it wouldn't support sailing (unless you're proposing a whole suite of new mechanics just for that) and it also wouldn't go well with the new mechanic of sinking provinces beneath the waves by terraforming them to sea.

For the Warhammer stuff, it would be neat to have ways to inflict insanity on troops and commanders maybe based on an end of turn MR check for stuff like the chaos realms to make them truly cancerous (excepting demons maybe). In other words it wouldn't work too differently from the old age mechanic setting off afflictions at the end of the year.

I would love an "exploration of the planes" mechanic. Where you travel to the planes but don't earn provinces that give you income/gems, by exploring the planes and defeating powerful indies, you get other kinds of perks (items, one time gold/gems, buff to bless, powerful units/mages, etc.) That would be an interesting question, do you risk your units exploring the indie challenges or do you use them to fight your opponents.

@LucidTactics One thing you can do for the Atlas is keep it as is, but add an icon for each province in the other folder. So if a plains turned into a forest, it would visually look the same but a little tree icon would pop up so you can tell it's different.
That would make bringing it over to dom6 much easier while still allowing terraforming to be visible - you only have to make like 5 or so icons and copy paste them over the tiles instead of redrawing the whole thing~

"set up shop in the realm of death and you can never get them out of the game, stream out of there and conquer the world"
Now see, i think its totally possible to still do this! Later on in the video you start talking about how for example, the Plane of Death would always have Rigor Mortis up? I think it could be just as viable to have a rule of planar travel for EVERYONE. Example, one player gets into Plane of Death and they're the only ones there, they summon up a massive army from no competition and try to conquer the mortal plane, but all of their units and leaders have their HP reduced. They inherently come from the Plane of Death, so they need MORE set up to actually conquer any other Plane.
The counter play for the Death Lord is to set up Death Scale across the plane they want to invade, from cultists. That in of itself gives every other player information on what they're up against. If an Ulm player starts noticing a large number of death cultists and Death Scale increasing for seemingly "no reason", then they know for sure that another player is actually cheesing the Death Plane.
And now you have an entire network of counters for each player while having entirely thematic and canon approaches to the different tribes.

29:00 ahh I see, so the maps are made in a set outline then it fills in that outline differently when you play it for each seperate game. So plains/forests and so on are unique to each game, that's cool.
I really like the blueprint for the landmass actually. I can't be dealing with 3rd party tools and stuff but I'm a fan of just generating random stuff and picking which ones seem the best sometimes, like windowshopping.
So being able to actually draw in some of the oceans as I want is helpful. Would be happy to see that built up some more over time. Something I'd like to see, I don't know if it's been added or whatever is a way to add some custom names to the province names for the map generation as well. It just adds a bit more uniqueness to the game.

One possibility to balance the planes is to make it so they don't generate any gold - you go there to get gems and if you want to stay you have to be really good at alchemy or have very powerful summons. I just think the possibility of fighting over the pits of hell just too good to ignore.

I think you're overestimating how difficult it is to support different terrains in hand-drawn maps. It would be a lot of work to make it look totally clean and bespoke in every case, but it's not hard to do a hand-drawn basemap and have terrain-relevant features on a different layer, and then for the terrain-shifted versions you can just take the terrain-free version of the maps and slap down terrain-specific stuff en masse, which can even be copy-pasted or a custom brush or whatever. It doesn't have to be the vanilla assets, since they could clash. The only part that gets iffy is coastlines.
Planes seem like something that could have a lot of cool custom stuff. Is there a support for a custom, potentially multi-province nexus? Loads of cool ideas coming to mind for me.
Can you flag provinces for all scales or just hot and cold?
I feel like globals being per-plane and having a command to have some native (or, rather, indie-controlled) globals would definitely be a cool way to make different planes distinct without needing too much by way of new mechanic structures. Globals that originate from a specific indie province and can be removed would also be cool.
