The movie originally had a different ending, concluding with the cure and redemption of Mr. Freeze. The original ending was bittersweet, with Mr. Freeze being cured by the Wayne Foundation, and able to hold his beloved Nora again, but then being led away to spend the rest of his life in prison. Warner Bros. asked Boyd Kirkland and Randy Rogel to revise the ending. The ending was altered so only Nora Fries was cured, and with Victor to live in seclusion.
Must have been an early in development change considering Mr Freeze returned in The New Batman Adventures before this was released (because of the delay) so they must have been worked on around the same time. Would have been a good end but the change was worth it Batman Beyond Meltdown was a great end to mr freeze story
Before the film became about Mr. Freeze, it had a different script entirely, featuring Bane as a "terminator" esque villain, but Warner Bros. wanted the film to be about Mr. Freeze, as Arnold Schwarzenegger had just been cast as the character in the live action Batman & Robin film. WB had initially asked Kirkland and Rogel if they could keep the same script but replace Bane's role with Mr. Freeze, but a new script was written from scratch.
Originally this was supposed to be released in 1997 as promotion for Batman & Robin, but because of that movie’s failure it was delayed a year, resulting in The New Batman Adventures premiering and featuring a sequel episode to this movie even though the movie hadn’t been released yet.
According to Boyd Kirkland, the CGI Division employed for this film, Warner Digital, was set up out of a desire to incorporate CGI in the original run of Batman: The Animated Series. Though ultimately, they weren't able to utilize the team until Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. In his mind, the implementation of CG in the film "helped elevate "SubZero" visually beyond the normal TV stuff" by allowing the crew "to inject more excitement and a 'live-action' feeling by 'moving the camera' more during action sequences" as well as keeping "vehicles (such as the Batwing) more consistent and solid-looking."
I had to be 5 or younger when I first saw this movie, and for whatever reason, the ending shot of Batman hanging from the Batwing slowly being wrapped up in his cape is what I always remember about this movie.
Should be noted Bruce Timm, one of the show's creators, has gone on record that he didn't work on this movie and disliked the decision to have Nora be alive and on ice because in his mind the whole point was "she was dead" like is established in Mr Freeze's first episode. This is an odd comment however since Nora's survival was already established in the show in the episode "deep freeze" an episode Timm himself worked on (or at least is credited on). And before anyone says he's talking about her being cured at the end the full quote is "The one story point that always kind of sticks in my craw is that they brought Mr. Freeze's wife back to life. That's something that I never would have done, because in my head, she was dead. She wasn't just like, preserved and on ice... she was dead!". I also find it hard to believe Timm didn't work on this movie considering the suggestive scene with Barbara jumping on the bed. That to me has Timm written all over it considering his pretty obvious fixation on Barbara behind the scenes.
I don’t find it hard to believe that there were other horny dudes who wrote that scene in but yeah it does seem like a Timm move lmao Very weird that he would criticize this movie like that though. I guess he just forgot?
I mean I kinda believe Timm wasn't a huge part of this since it has Dick and Barbara together, and Timm has a history of putting her with batman despite everyone hating that
no, it makes sense. she's in the tank so we assume she's "alive", but he's saying that that's just false hope. it read to me like he is indeed talking about her being cured. and I get that. its make Freeze even more tragic if she never gets revived. plus, keeping her like that kept Freeze's motivation intact. if you are going to keep using him as a villain having her there is justification enough. otherwise he's just another random villain with a gimmick.
Its seeming like Blind Wave might not watch Superman TAS. If not, they should definitely watch World's Finest, aka the Batman Superman movie that introduces Batman to Superman for the first time in the DCAU. It was technically a three part episode of Superman TAS, but its easy to watch without having seen any of it, and it technically is what first introduced fans to Batman and Joker's new art styles.
I highly recommend watching Casually Comics' video on Nora Freeze, but to give a cliffnotes version of some of it, in the tie-in comics to Batman the Animated Series Victor did indeed stay away so that Nora could live her life. Nora got remarried, to the doctor who saved her life, but she still loved Victor and eventually the two were reunited again. Events happened and Victor was lost in the artic, trapped helplessly in a situation he couldn't get out of, and Nora's story ends with her dedicating her life to try and find and save him.
29:10 Mark! Originally, Barbara had dark brown or black hair, as did Yvonne Craig, and the red hair was a wig as part of her costume. (In person, Yvonne's hair was that way too, by the way.) In this version, her hair is the same red color for both identities! 😊
Mary Kay Bergman took over for Melissa Gilbert as Barbara/Batgirl in this movie & what would be one of her final roles before her unfortunate passing away.
@@ObscureSwan Yeah, I hate what they did with him later in this show, but without that we would've never gotten that amazing Batman Beyond episode. Sooo they cancel each other out? :D
8:42 - You don't need the license when you own the song. Bad pun alert: the romantic song playing behind Dick and Barbra was 'I Only Have Eyes (Ice) For You.'
I always feel bad about Mr. Freeze because he's one of the few villians that everyone to some extent can relate to. All he wants to do is save his wife.
The 2nd ever, DC and Batman animated film. It went straight to video. But it was incredible anyway. Released 26 years ago (March 17th) between the end of Batman:the animated series on Fox Kids and the start of The New Batman Adventures on Kids WB. Good story and storytelling. The title alone was awesome. The voice cast of course, never fails. Victor Fries getting some sort of happy ending was pretty cool. After all those years, he deserved a win. If one of the animated series' creators' Bruce Timm was involved, Nora Fries would've died. The prolonged cryo statis should've kill her. 2 animation companies in South Korea made it happen and it won an Annie Award (Best Home Video Animation). This was the last Batman animated home-release with cel animation. After the disappointment with Batman and Robin in '97, this was refreshing to watch.
Batman & Mr. Freeze: Sub-Zero, an animated movie that’s also a better version of Batman & Robin. Just without Poison Ivy and with a comic accurate Barbara Gordon. This movie is the reason Mr. Freeze is one of the most sympathetic villains ever.
Hey Blindwave I know U have a recommendation section at blindwave but this is a fan animation on TH-cam of Batman it’s called Batman broken promises very impressive for a fan animation just something I thought would be cool to check only 15min long.
THEY'VE NEVER SEEN FUTURAMA????????? JFC add it to the schedule! Batman TAS, It's Always Sunny, Battlestar Galactica, Fringe, Fargo, and Futurama.....now THAT'S a schedule. Goddamn.
20:04 Mark! Guys, hello! 😊 At this point, I got distracted by the notion of how one of those can be "abandoned" and still be afloat and in place because that movie about one being on fire, gave me the impression that they are all mobile platforms that require a crew to keep them in place! Before that movie, I presumed that they were built in place! In disaster movies, they fall apart like they are attached to the bedrock under the ocean floor. (The one in "Man of Steel" gives that impression, too, by the way.) The search results informed me of the several types that there are. Then, I got distracted by other links, et cetera. I should think that the scrap metal value alone is worthwhile enough for such a rig to not remain out there for that long! 🤔
the tie in comic batman adventures shows in issue 15 that Koonak is living in a orphanage following the events of the movie. Nora visits him and Koonak expresses doubt Victor still has good in him if he did somehow survive. That being said i know some of the tie in comics for the DCAU are of questionable canon.
Originally this was going to be a Bane focused movie Then Arnold Schwarzenegger was cast as Mr Freeze (would have been a better pick for Bane) so they asked them to use Mr Freeze They actually told them to just change the names in the scripts. Luckily they wrote a new script instead. Would be cool to see that Bane movie but really getting a continuation of Mr Freeze’s story was worth it Plus Bane’s first dcau appearance doesnt come anywhere near close as heart of ice or even deep freeze
And here guys is where you should take a break and start watching Superman:the animated series until the crossover episode Worlds's finest before continuing. The next Batman season was released after this episode (2 years had passed and many things had changed) . On any case, DON'T watch Joker's millions on the next season before watching World's finest. I got confused myself.
Thinking it over, no big deal,. Just an event from the crossover that it's mentioned in the Batman epiosde, but I still got confused. Anyway there are other crossovers after that and it's better to watch the episodes chronologically or you'll get confused again... Like I did. 😉😉😁
I was hoping you'd react to this movie. EDIT: Funny you should mention it, but there actually is an arc in the supplementary comics where Nora does try to find him.
Growing up with this version of Mr Freeze where he's a bad guy but sometimes he'll be an ally of Batman was fantastic. Then you watch Gotham's version and it's just such a slap in the face seeing what they did to Mr Freeze.
22:18 Mark! Huh? It was abandoned with those tanks full?! So, was it an emergency abandonment? 🤔 From what I've seen in either "Popular Mechanics" or "Popular Science" an oil tanker is connected to the platform to transport the oil away! 😮
Love that they teased some of Barbra and Dick were dating in this and love that Batman will always try to help Freeze he's the one compassionate villian tho I think Barbra should have felt bad about almost killing Nora lol but I get it she was captured and has no real connection to freeze and isn't fully into the Batfamily yet
As far as I’m concerned, this was the BTAS series finale. I don’t consider TNBA to really be a season 3 as it is very different in not just art style but writing as well. The "water, it's melted ice" line from Dick was so facepalmingly stupid, it went full circle into becoming hilarious.
The "They drew her so good, and he's cardboard" bit is so funny every time.
Eric being so distraught that Nora’s pod was broken really goes to show how emotionally invested they all got with this show
