I said it in the last Ventriloquist episode as well, but the goons know that Scarface isn't real and that it's Arnold. They're just also aware that they can't pull off as big of scores without him, so they play into his delusion.
Yeah, though I think Batman taking the blame for Two-Face's murders at end of Dark Knight is trying to help Harvey in death at least. Couldn't do much to help him when he was living but spent eight years protecting his reputation at the cost of his own. That's something.
@carn9507 I think that was more about the people in the city not finding out Harvey did all those bad things. He had become a symbol for good, putting a lot of criminals in jail and helping the city
@@markosmatrozos4175 yeah but it was still helping to save Harvey's legacy at the expense of his own. After someone's died, their reputation is all that exists.
I went go look it up - damn, you're right! And it's not even super well hidden either, how did i never notice that? Lol. Shame the guys haven't watched STAS yet so they didn't recognise them lol.
This is indeed a permanent rehabilitation for Arnold. The only appearances of Scarface in the DCAU after this point are from Bruce keeping the original Scarface doll as one of his trophies in the Batcave. Oh and an alternate universe version of them but I won't say where or when that happens but it's a long time before you get there.
To their credit, they actually hired little people actors for the little people characters in this episode. Billy Barty (the wizard from Willow) as Hips McManus, and Patty Maloney as Mrs. Segar (she played Lumpy in the Star Wars Holiday Special).
For some reason, the small detail of Hips stealing the milk and paper stuck out to me as a kid. Like they thought, “This guy is only appearing for a minute but let’s get across he’s a crook.”
I do feel bad for Arnold Wesker, he can’t escape Scarface but i like at the end he’s finally rid of him but shooting him down into the fan. But the scenes where Scarface is in the phone booth and Batman tries to sneak up on it, then suddenly disappears is super creepy
This was a great story. I love that Arnold does take back his life and destroys the Scarface puppet and putting that persona away. I believe we never see Scarface again in DCAU, which makes it a rare rehabilitation of a villain story. Bruce genuinely trying to help him and hiring people who have served their sentences is a great aspect that gets lost with Batman in other series. He recognizes how hard it is for former criminals to get jobs when they are out of prison. He really does use his wealth to try to help Gotham.
Big question though is which villain you do it with. The next The Batman movie will supposedly have Clayface as its villain. Many versions of the character are sympathetic but it's just as likely they could go with something more akin to the original Clayface, who was just a serial killer.
@@aros0018 I think the sympathetic version is more prominent these days - honestly, MOST of Batman villains have become at least somewhat sympathetic, with the exceptions of some like the Joker, Hush or Scarecrow, which make the occasion more notable.
In the comics Scarface is actually a possessed puppet that was carved from the tree where criminals were hung at before they renovated the prison. I feel like Batman hearing him talk to himself was a little hint they wanted to imply that was the case here too for comic readers.
its nice this Wesker gets a happy ending. His post crisis version wasn't so lucky, being killed by the second Tally Man and a woman named Peyton Riley finding the puppet and becoming a new ventriloquist. I would love him as a main villain in a batman movie. I could see him showing up in a "The batman" movie at some point.
It’s odd how Arkham rehabilitation is portrayed as positive in this episode. After all, it did genuinely help Wesker before his associates tried to ruin him.
True, although isn't it a case of Batman's rogue's gallery has to choose to rehabilitate for themselves? Although considering it's Gotham, I wouldn't be surprised if there were some that would go in just so as to try and get them out to continue their crime spree, but I'd like to think most of the doc's there genuinely try to help them. Like this episode is lowkey an encapsulation of how it can be like trying to rehabilitate yourself in Gotham. Even if you try to better yourself, your darker side and elements of the naturally dark city try to crawl it's way back into you. Honestly I could see a "trying to stay off drugs" allegory in it.
Penguin was also almost fully rehabilitated before he was pushed back into crime by people just using him in one episode. I think it comes down to Gotham itself is just a awful place in general.
You guys should DEFINITELY checkout the fan film "Batman: Broken Promise" Besides being a great short, it's a really dark and gritty version of the Ventriloquist. Plus Mark Hamill should play him in live action.
It must have difficult to write the final chapter for many of these legendary rogues, but this is a great sendoff for the bizarre duo of Scarface and the Ventriloquist. There's always this lingering uncertainty factor as to how 'real' Scarface is, with his men trying to convince Wesker by gaslighting him.
Random thought of mine that doesn't have anything to do with the episode really (and i should have said this earlier when it was more relevant to the discussions lmao) but - probably a controversial opinion - i've always thought The New Batman Adventures was better than the og BTAS series. Not that BTAS is bad of course - it's amazing - but every time i rewatch the DCAU i always come away from the Batman stuff thinking the New Adventures is more....consistent? Possibly because it's shorter but that alone doesn't necessarily guarantee it'd be more consistent. But with BTAS there's a loottttt of episodes where i'm like "i could just skip this one" lol. I think also the fact that TNBA has more Batfamily stuff in it is also a factor, i've always liked when Batman has a big Batfamily supporting him rather than him solo, makes for more fun and sometimes emotional interactions, but that's just me. I also don't mind the art change either. Both are equal to me. The og BTAS has much more detail and is more "intimidating" but often because of that, it's stiffer when it comes to (most) action scenes. Whereas the new art style isn't as cool looking or detailed but because of that, it's easier to animate the action scenes and they're better imo in TNBA because of that. Both have pros and cons. (I also like Batman's design in TNBA more, and think it's his best look in the entire DCAU but shhhh)
I’m right there with you! I always preferred TNBA a little over BTAS. I love and respect BTAS but TNBA to me is just more fun, fast paced and action heavy.

In the scene where Arnold was walking in the park, there was a brief cameo from Clark Kent and Lois Lane from Superman The Animated Series.
