Thank you! My research showed destroyers in various conditions from brand new, to ships that looked beat up as all get out!. I like to make my models look "used". I feel it gives them a little more life-like appearance. That, of course, is just my opinion on a much debated subject. Thanks for watching my video and for your comments!

@@curvedslightly6815 The USS Fletcher will be an outstanding build. My first build of this model was of the USS John Rodgers DD574. She was the last surviving round bridge Fletcher. She was finally scrapped in 2011 after a failed try to save her as a museum ship. My model of the USS John Rodgers is on permanent display in the model museum inside the USS Lexington in Corpus Christi Texas. I built the USS Heermann, DD532, for my personal collection. This time I decided to build a square bridge variant of the Fletcher class. Thank you again for watching my video and best wishes to you on your build!

@@curvedslightly6815 I am pleased something good has come out of the video. The oil caning is very time consuming. And yes, I was very concerned that I would mess up the hull. Before attempting the process, get some scrap plastic and a curved X-Acto blade and practice until your comfortable. However. no matter how much you prepare, the first scrapes on the real hull are scary! I have a construction video on the John Rodgers, maybe I should post it someday? Best of luck on your build!

USS Vesole! - She was a Gearing Class destroyer. My dad was on the USS Kendrick DD612, a Benson Class DD. Thank you for your comment and also for watching my video. I did a lot of research while building this model. I wanted to build a square bridge Fletcher and used the Revell kit as the foundation of the model. As I started conversion to a square bridge design, I started running in to more and more that also needed to be changed. The result was the model in this video. I plan on building a Benson class in the future and I'm trying to get as much details on the Kendrick as I can. Thank you again for your comment!

Made by consolidated steel, I’ve got some company newspapers from them announcing the launch of the Neumann K Perry. Volunteered on the Orleck for 5 years. In Orange the old station housing still exists in parts but the roads for the naval base are still available for foot traffic, when the area was reserve fleet.

Thank you for your comment, it is appreciated. In all honesty this is one of my favorite models. I spent many hours scratch building and researching. I built another one of these 1/144 scale Fletcher destroyers before this one. It ended up in the model museum on the USS Lexington in Corpus Christi Texas. I was happy to donate it but it left me with an empty feeling as I did a lot of work on that model too. I decided to do something I rarely do and build another Fletcher. This one would be a square bridge late design as opposed to the early round bridge design. This model is kept on display in my residence and I enjoy it daily. Wow! Is this as amazing as imaginable, or what? Details and corrections that I would have no idea as to how to represent. And the end results are a veritable smörgåsbord of features that augment this to a seafood feast! My sentimental favourite is that you have crewed the ship with a respectable compliment, breathing life into a machine.
I would build mine as an early version, in an ocean-going diorama in the eastern North Atlantic, engaging a Deutsche Kriegsmarine U-Boat Typ VIIc at periscope depth, at the moment in which a pair of depth charges has detonated just a few metres beneath the keel of that lurking submarine, visibly bending the hull of the erstwhile sea-hunter, the spray of saltwater just missing the doughty defender . . . .
To represent the DKM U-Boat Typ VIIc 1:144-scale model kit: 1) Trumpeter 05912 1/144 DKM Type VIIc U-Boat; 2) Bunker Studio (WS14401) 1/144 U-Boat VIIC Upgrade Set (for Trumpeter kit 05912); 3) YZM Model YZ-002 1/144 DKM VIIc U-Boat 3D Print (for Trumpeter kit 05912). I would acquire both detail sets, in addition to its use in the project, for the opportunity to assess them for their accuracy, suitability, usability, etc.
I also would build another as a later version somewhere off the coast of a fog-shrouded, silhouette of an island shortly after dawn in the western South Pacific, in a close-quarters surface engagement with a comparable enemy, as the destroyer’s 5-inch rounds rake the foe’s bridge and superstructure . . . .
I do not know how one might represent the adversary’s vessel. Perhaps a forced perspective diorama with the IJN warship in 1:350th scale. I must admit that I greatly would prefer the better detail that a 1:144th-scale kit would offer. If one could find none, would it be practical to attempt converting another Fletcher-class kit to the task, scratch-building the different features? Such would be miles beyond my capacity!

    • @modelsbymonte2431
      @modelsbymonte2431  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

You have a great idea in the works. It would definitely be a show-stopper at any convention. Great detail in your description of the events, too!
At 1/144 scale, that would be a very large display. It would be interesting to see this go from concept to completion.
The second display you mention is also a very interesting subject. I think your idea of forced perspective would be the only way to achieve this display in an area that does not take up a tennis court. At 1/144 scale the opposing ships would be too far apart to have displayed on a table top.
Converting a Fletcher to a IJN destroyer would be extremely difficult. That task is also miles beyond my capabilities.
You have some awesome ideas. I thing that these are both achievable in a different scale such as 1/350.
Thank you for your comment and for watching my video. Good luck on these ideas and best wishes!
Oh, on the destroyer model in the video. You mentioned the crew. I got a comment telling me that the crew was dressed to uniformly to be realistic. Some should have on tee shirts and others in various colors. Live and learn. Thanks again!

I have this kit... I'm planning on converting mine to the USS Bush, DD-529, which was sunk at radar Picket Station #1, Okinawa. My father's ship, the LCS(L)-24 picked up 42 survivors from the Bush. The Bush was converted from a round bridge to a square bridge and had the Mk.51 directors mounted in tubs that bulged out from the bridge splinter shielding. DD527, 528 and 529 all three received AA upgrades, replacing the forward 20mm tubs between the CIC and the 52 mount with twin 40mm guns, added two more 40mm tubs amidships. The midships 20mm mounts were retained and three 20mm guns were mounted aft in a triangular shield forward of the Depth Charge racks.

The Revell Fletcher Class Destroyer in 1/144 scale, out of the box, is a prime example of an early war Fletcher design. The design was modified and altered as the war progressed as I'm sure you are aware. Your build will require considerable modification to the kit. As I stated in the first video in this series, the aftermarket square bridge I purchased was nothing more than scrap resin, the casting was very, very poor. You may have better luck if you purchase one, but I would suggest that you scratch build the bridge as I did, you will get much better results. Aftermarket 40mm guns are available but you may have to scratch build the gun sights. Sounds to me like you have an exciting build. I hope you will post your results for us all to enjoy! Good luck on this conversion! Thank you for watching my video and for your comments!

The sailors are from Shapeways.com. Shapeways is a 3D printing service. You can find all sorts of 3D printed items including 40mm Borfors guns. DDE-449 sounds like it will be a good conversion project. I believe that she had the tripod mast and, if I'm not mistaken, the #2 5" gun was replaced with a Hedge Hog anti-submarine emplacement. A very ambitious conversion. You may find some of the parts you need at Shapeways, they have a lot of conversion parts available in many scales. Best wishes on you conversion project. I still wanted a Fletcher for my collection and this model was the result. I spent over a year building this model. Fear not, I do plan on donating this one to a museum before I depart this Earth.
