    My favorite scene in Star Wars was when Darth Vader said "No, I am your father." and Luke said "Ugh, I lost my hand and now I find out my dad is a planet-destroying maniac? Great, that's *just* what I needed to hear this morning." it was so fun and quirky it really enhanced the experience.

    _"I'm talking to a cuff"_ is a really strange line. When I hear "cuff" there are three things I think of: cufflinks, handcuffs and that thing doctors wrap around your arm to take your blood pressure. Nobody really uses the word to describe a large bracelet.

      @@Memememe-is1yn oh yeah, forgot about that one. So that makes four major uses for the word, none of which involve large bracelets. But technically it's not an improper use, according to Merriam Webster, it _can_ mean a "wide metal band worn as a bracelet." It's just that absolutely nobody uses it that way, so it's more of a case of someone using very outdated definitions. The world in the game seems more medieval fantasy type, so the inhabitants might talk like that, but a modern girl from our world wouldn't.

      I prefer a silent protagonist. I can make the voice up in my head or base it on basic grunts and hurt noises they make. If its an RPG it leads to more dialogue choices because you don't need to pay a protagonist voice actor that tends to be to big of a name with to high a price tag. Not to mention for me their can be one or two NPC's that have flat or cringe dialogue and I can get past it. It the protagonist I play as ends up like that it will ruin a game.

    1) They’re still too vague about the game’s story/plot. They throw attitude, sassiness, and cheekiness at us, without giving us a chance to know who this character is.
    2) Their marketing teams aren’t working closely enough together. This would be their Social Media Team clashing with their Marketing Department. You’ll be surprised how disconnected both teams can be in any given company.

      Worse, I think they haven't worked out who the target audience should be. Either the mktg is trying to sell the game as something it's not (i.e. TWEWY meets Twelve Kingdoms), or they made a traditional epic fantasy game with a meta, Deadpool-esque MC, so neither audience will be pleased.
      Neither bodes well - either it'll be a good game that dies on the vine from mishandled marketing, or it's a confused/schizo game that can't commit to one artistic/tonal direction.

    This is a problem with a lot of media in general. So much of our entertainment tries to be "cool" and "hip" by trying to insert witty and quippy dialogue that only makes what they're trying to create far more lamer and annoying than if they were trying to present it earnestly and without any apologies. It seems like a symptom of people who have no faith in themselves and what they're creating. A consequence of self-loathing, if you will.
    Say what you will about Kingdom Hearts or Sonic, but I guarantee you they wouldn't have worked nearly as well if they were trying to be self-aware and meta about what their games are about. They have the audience they have partially *because* of how seriously they take themselves and how genuine and sincere they are with their premises. (Or with Sonic, at least initially from the days of Adventure 1 up to Black Knight.)

    So with the focus on the writing, one thing I want to point out is that the writing for this game was not done by Square Enix's in-house writers or any Japanese writer for that matter. The writing was outsourced to Western writers in a sort of oddball collaboration. It's not like collaborations like this haven't worked before, just look at Elden Ring, though if I recall the writing team at From Software only used GRRM to write the background lore and then they built on top of it themselves. Point being the writers on Forspoken are far from being GRRM. Amy Hennig is great, but she's hardly working alone. There are four other writers on this game as well in the form of Todd Stashwick, Gary Whitta, K-Michel Parandi, and Allison Rymer. They don't exactly have long or critically successful writing careers with the exception of Gary Whitta but the vast majority of his resume is being an editor for a news outlet. And that last person doesn't even have a Wikipedia page for me to look at, certainly never heard her name before. Point being the writing team has one large credit, and then a bunch of question marks and really no idea as to what each of them is responsible for. The dialogue itself feels like it's probably genuine to the personality of the character, but it still comes across cringy and annoying to the audience the game seems targeted at and strikes me as like, older people trying to imitate younger people because they think that's what the hip young people like most and don't get it at all. The music choices for the trailers also speak to this because they're playing licensed hip hop tracks or something over top of this fantasy action world and it's just this weird disconnect. When they play actual tracks from the games soundtrack, it works better, the licensed music just kills it.

    • @MrMightyZ
      @MrMightyZ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fully agree and the silly thing is older people shouldn’t be wondering what younger people think is “cool” and in fact no one should be communicating based on what they think anyone else thinks might be “cool” because younger or older the message becomes patently fake. People can communicate across generations by just speaking their truth. “I think this is beautiful because…” and this kind of nonsense should be consigned to the past. A “quaint” thing we used to do that’s pretty embarrassing now. Those were the old ways. Now it’s time to respect each other and speak truthfully.

    • @squirts1
      @squirts1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah I think that potentially is the game soundtrack ... There are multiple indications that this is what the game is... normal modern day teenager or 20 something transported to a fantasy world who suddenly has powers... That's exactly what it sounds like is happening here. The music, the dialogue, the tone, all speak to this.
      Marketing hasn't been clear enough I don't think so the problem now is people projecting what they want from the game based on the visuals alone.

      Really sad how annoying/unlikeable the MC seems to be because the game itself looks like it's going to have great gameplay.
      Honestly it might partly be the actress too as well as the writing. she comes across as a smug twat in everything I've seen her in, and her line delivery just exacerbates the already bad dialogue. If her personality doesn't develop past that in some way then I simply can't see myself engaging with the character. If the entire game is filled with her making meta-narrative commentary, or worse, injecting modern commentary into what is meant to be another world, I can't see myself engaging with the game as a whole, nevermind the world or the characters.

    I think this dialogue was lifted from a scene where the delivery made sense originally.
    PS: And if this is the case, then most trailers solve it by showing the frist snippet of the scene with the character talking, then cut away to the trailer. Then the audience understands the delivery makes sense.

    • @brianb-t4v
      @brianb-t4v 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      These lines were said in more context in an earlier trailer which had more dialogue overall and explained or hinted at more of the story.

    • @mugileaguegaming1769
      @mugileaguegaming1769 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Or the opposite -- show the action/gameplay first to hook the audience, then cut to the original scene on the last line of dialog to ground the audience so that they'll buy the scenes that follow. Superhero movie trailers do this, especially if it's their first movie.
      But honestly, I think people are thinking too much about this. It's likely the marketing team made a long version of the trailer that made sense, then are just trying to maximize their return by making a quick 30 second cut to be used on Twitter. They just grabbed the best parts of the gameplay and overlaid the audio without thinking twice, then added subtitles because most users seeing this are on mobile with no audio. I think it's unfair that people are getting the impression that this is what the game is, so hopefully when this game comes out it speaks for itself.

    I do agree that hip hop music in a fantasy game feels dissonant, but I feel that you can make it work if you do it along the same lines as Guardians of the Galaxy movies: use it as a character trait. In GotG the music isn't just a cheap gimmick, it also ties into said music being the one thing Peter Quill has from Earth, and thus he has his music player full of 70's and 80's pop music in it. They could do it the same way here to better show that the main character is not from the world they're now in.
    The trailer could actually work conceptually in trying to juxtapose a modern style with a fantasy setting since we are talking about a person from Earth falling into a mystical world, it just needs better scriptwriting and direction to better emphasize that.

    It seemed like they wanted to do a mix of a story and gameplay trailer, whereas they should have done them separate. Have one exploring the world and fighting without the need for dialogue, and another with more story detail. Show the character before entering the world, quick clip of finding the cuff (or even a bit of it talking) and showing why it may be significant, and introducing other (if any) characters you may see on your adventure (but not enough to truely spoil it).
