You and the rest of the MJR crew are the reasons why I enjoy this so much and I hope to one day have a collection that would make you all proud.
I have to disagree about these being “underrated”. I feel like underrepresented would be a more apt term since the people who have bought these 5 really seem to love them.
I would disagree in the sense that if you asked the average-casual gamer what was better the 3ds or vita the majority would say 3ds, but they would be wrong.
But just looking at the low sales for most of these would tell you they are underrated. They often gain cult followings but will never be talked about in the same vein as the PS2, Wii etc simply because very few people actually own these 5 in comparison
Matthew Champion sales have nothing to do with how something is under- or overrated. It’s an extremely subjective and relative term. For example, if only 2 people played game X and hyped the hell out of it, but you didn’t like it when you got to play it, you’d think it was overrated. Same thing would happen if it was 2, 200, or 2m people.

Oh wait I misread as you saying you dont think.....nvm. I hard disagree, when it first arrived in stores it sold nearly as much as the ps2. Had difficulty even acquiring it later down the line until my cousin sold me theirs. Dunno, just always believed Gamecube was equally popular as the PS2 and only XBOX being unfortunately underappreciated until the 360 cemented it as a truly milestone of a console. It played PC Ports that the ps2 and gc couldnt handle. Did make me envious.
Does anyone else think if Nintendo would've changed the name of the wiiu to the Wii 2 it would've done better? People would of known it was a new console! The confusion was that people didn't know if it was a new console or just a new controller addon!!
Should have dropped the Wii monitor completely, and called it the Nintendo Duo, or Nintendo remote or something that described it better, and divert it away from the Wii
The Sega Dreamcast was my first 3D console. Was disappointed to see it end. I played Soul Reaver, Tomb Raider, and Rayman on that system -- among others.

Seeing the vita at the top of this list brought me an unbelievable amount of joy. It’s such a great console and there’s so much you can do with it, especially if you own a ps3 or ps4
for me it was metroid prime, re remake, re0, and re4. some of the most amazing games of their time and prime is still one of the most amazing games ever. i still kick myself for getting rid of my gamecube.
Starwars rogue one and rebel strike Smash bros Mario kart Double dash Viewtiful Joe Mario Sunshine Metroid prime 1 and 2 Zelda windwaker MGS remake 1080 Avalanche Eternal Darkness F-Zero GX Wave racer blue storm StarFox Adventures Phantasy star online Resident evil 1 and 2

I bought way to many Vita games, glad I modded mine. Allows me to play some games that I wouldn't have access to any other way like translated Japanese games :)
What killed the Vita was the price of the memory cards. You HAD to have them in order to play, but they were crazy expensive. Sony really should've done something about that, but rather than address it, they just abandoned the Vita.
They had the answer all along, the PSPGo came with 16GB of storage on it and you could also use Sony memory sticks with it. I don't know why they didn't give the Vita at least the same amount of storage; a lot of people would have bought it if they didn't need to buy a memory card right away.
Ehh I wouldn't say so, they stopped releasing games for it after 3 years, in both Japan and in the west, is just that japanese third party developers loved making games for it and sold well enough to keep making games for it.
Saturn was AMAZING. I LOVE Street Fighter Zero 3, X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Radiant Silvergun, Burning Rangers, Sonic R, Sega Ages (compilation), Sega Dream Works Yu Suzuki Vol. 1, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter.
Batsugun, Hyper Duel, blast wind, astal, silhouette mirage, guardian heroes, Dragon Force, Keio flying squadron and sonic council. Just a few games which I loved, for me it was the best console I owned.
The dreamcast was pretty much perfect but then the PS2 murdered it. The thing that I love about the past eras is that there were differences in the games on each platform, each platform had its own unique style and games. And now, its fairly homogeneous. Here's hoping the amico spices things up.
@@Myjacob99 I guess I just think that because I bought mine so late that even the Vita was coming to an end. And I had really never known anyone that had one.
@jose ramiro reynoso ruiz I just responded to the last guy explaining to me how it isn't underrated. But I'll give you my brief explanation as to why I thought that. I was extremely late to the game and didn't really hear about it before I owned one.

Later I came back and started collecting again and found out about guardian heroes, deep fear, astal among many others. Truly a great system. I’ve always had a theory. Sega used to base their consoles around bringing the arcade home and by the time the Saturn came out the arcade was in decline and eventually faded out and so did sega around the same time... shame I really loved the sega consoles

But i kept hearing the stories about SEGA. And then came the dreamcast. It obliterated PS1 & N64 in everything. I just loved it when i tried it out. I then had enough money for one. My dad said "no Get PS2". my mom said "buy whatever you want". My dad got suckered into the PS2 hype, and so did i... I never forgave myself. The Dreamcast was great, but it just didn't have what it took to compete with the PS2. And the fact that you could play burned games from a CD ruined it too. I was guilty of it myself. When you're a kid and have very limited funds, you just can't afford buying the games you really want.
I have been a gamer since the Atari 2600, and just recently found you Channel! Man do I love the content! And you have stirred up old flames now I want to collect retro !
Y’all done messed up. Atari 5200 is easily the most underrated. The standard controllers are the absolute worst but there are other controller options and a huge homebrew community.
@@MetalJesusRocks And yet the CX53 5200 Trak-Ball Controller is one of the greatest accessory controllers of all tyyyyyyyyyyyyyme! It's a shame Warner forced Atari Inc to discontinue the 5200 - whose shortcomings were due to Warner's own decisions over Atari's engineers' wishes, like not including 2600 backwards compatibility from the start and releasing non self-centering analog joysticks - because the same engineer [Dan Kramer] who designed the Trak-Ball Controller was going to create a 5200 Driving Controller [based upon Atari's arcade Pole Position steering wheel/pedals/shifter] and then a 5200 Yoke Controller [based upon Atari's arcade Star Wars Yoke; Parker Bros would've released an updated version of "Star Wars - the Arcade Game" for the 5200 to take advantage of it]. But Warner listened to GCC - who had programmed a lot of the 5200's games and had designed the new MARIA graphics chip - who insisted that their next-gen console [which became the Atari 7800] would be more powerful than the 5200 and cheaper to build and thus Warner forced Atari Inc to discontinue the 5200. Warner CEO Steve Ross was getting pressured to do something drastic about Atari due to its bad press hurting Warner share price so he foolishly broke up Atari into pieces and sold it off which allowed Nintendo to take over the industry without much hostility [except from the retailers in the first year]. Atari Inc's Consumer Division's assets [gaming consoles and computers] went to Jack Tramiel's Trammel Technology LTD [which renamed itself "Atari Corp"], Atari Inc's arcade division became Atari Games [later launching the infamous "Tengen" sub-brand] and was sold off to Namco, and the AtariTel Division with its breakthrough video phones was sold off to Mitsubishi. The proto-Apple Stores known as the "Atari Adventure" stores didn't open, the Atari/Androbot partnership fell apart, the Atari/Lucasfilm partnership ended, the Amiga Corp's Amiga Lorraine chipset - which became the Amiga computer line - was stolen by Commodore and thus didn't end up becoming the Atari "Mickey" 16-bit console for Christmas 1985 nor the Atari 1850XLD computer, the Atari OMNI chipset and the AMY sound chip weren't completed, and the Atari 7800 got delayed from being released until early 1986 due to stalled negotiations between Atari Corp, Warner, and GCC over ownership, development costs, and royalties. [Jack Tramiel wanted to sell it for $59.99 at Christmas 1984 while GCC refused and demanded it sell for the original $149 price so they'd received their promised royalties]. And the rest is history...a bitter history at that...
@Major Gear Ha! The Intellivision controllers were the worst. And the system was barely more powerful than the 2600. It was nowhere near as powerful as Atari's custom chipset [ANTIC, GTIA, and POKEY] at the heart of the 400/800/XL/XE/XEGS computers and the 5200, or the Colecovision's chipset by TI.

I remember playing the GameCube at a friend's house and loving every game I played, today I still have like 30 games I still need to get for it! Such a great library!
I definitely believe that the Sega Saturn is CRIMINALLY underrated. The Neo Geo AES has some amazing arcade style games, if you enjoy fighting games and shooters it’s a must own. Most of these titles are thankfully readily accessible via eshops and steam for a much, much more affordable price than the massive carts. I’m also a fan of the Turbografx 16 and PC Engine, thankfully a mini console was released but there are still some odds and ends missing.
Great list again and Vita is such a great console. The d-pad being one of my favorite on any controller and the travel range of the analog sticks is actually great. I still miss my Dreamcast to this day. When they discontinued it I decided to get a PS2, but my parents said I couldn't have both so I sold the Dreamcast to get it.... I had everything for that console, coloured pads - keyboard and mouse - microphones - steering wheel.. all the VMUs and vibration packs etc, the only thing I never got was the arcade stick set up... I had many games for the PS2 but I never ever had as much fun with it or in games as I ever did with the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast gave me my first experiences of online gaming too. Something some people forget started in consoles with the Dreamcast. Even my dad played battleships online with it, it was always fun playing against people of other languages and attempting to communicate with each other, and laughing playing the game. I was heartbroken with what happened to the Dreamcast and sega due to the hype of PS2 and the DVD issue, such a great console for its time and graphically could hold up to the PS2 (in my opinion).
It breaks my heart to see the dreamcast go out so soon. My favorite memories about it has to be phantasy star online (or PSO). I still have friends I made there.

Mobile gaming took a big bite, too. DS and PSP sold a combined 240 million units. Vita and 3DS only 90 million. Even the Switch might end up at 120 million, half of what PSP and DS did a decade ago. Phone gaming hurt dedicated handheld and even Nintendo got hurt by it.
@@johnlawful2272 Absolutely. It's almost as if I'm the only who has realized this, but back in 2011-13 phone gaming, as this "real" alternative to consoles, was at its zenith, so Vita (and even the 3DS, from 150 million to 70m) launched at the worst possible time. Also Playstation doesn't have franchises like Pokemon or Animal Crossing. Blaming Sony is for the most part ridiculous. Masses were not interested. It wasn't selling well enough. The end.
I think the Nintendo 64 should have a spot somewhere, it was at the time CD's where taking over cartridge but here in the UK the N64 was holding on, especially with 007 Goldeneye
That was here in the U.S. as well, Nintendo included the Analog stick on their controller which completely transformed the 3d action/platformer game. Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, Perfect Dark, Shadows of the Empire, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask etc... great experiences on the N64. They also had 4 controller ports making it a couch party console out of the box, I'm sure you remember 4 player battles in Goldeneye, Mario Kart 64, and others...
It was also one of the most powerful 8-bit consoles of the time. It was rocking a Motorola 6809 CPU... that sucker ate the 6502 and the Z80 and still asked for more...
@@TheJeremyHolloway Interesting! I never really compared it like I would any other console because it was so unique. I miss my Vectrex... going to have to check prices right now.
The Vita was great but it came out after mobile gaming blew up, was poorly marketed and the memory cards doomed it. It was far more impressive for its time in 2012 than Switch was in 2016. Imagine if GTA had come out on it.
That was never really a factor because by the end of 2000 DVD players had dropped from over £500 to under £100 and in late 2001 around the time of the Xbox release you could pick up a dvd player for £50

The Turbografx 16 was another underrated system. Its games were fun to play and had useful peripherals such as an TurboCD which let you play disk games and CDs. It was ahead of its time.
If you meant underrated in terms of sales, here’s my list (no particular order): 1. Turbo Grafx 16 2. Wii U 3. Sega Master System 4. Nintendo GameCube 5. Dreamcast I personally thought the Saturn wasn’t very good; it was expensive, had a terrible frame rate with first person shooters (I.e. Doom, Hexen) and the 3D was done poorly compared with the PlayStation/N64 (due to it being very hard to develop for). The controller didn’t suit my big hands either. It 100% should’ve had backwards compatibility too.
Just got a Wii U earlier this year and the gamepad may be my new favorite controller. I haven't used the Wii U Pro Controller yet, but I love the joystick placement on the gamepad with the Nintendo button arrangement. Also, being able to adjust inventory and view maps without pausing in the HD Zelda remakes was an absolute game changer. I wish they were able to do that with Breathe of the Wild, but if they did it would have been better than the Switch version.

A guy down the hall from me in college sold me his Dreamcast the day the he got a PS2. It’s such a great system and I still have it til this day
@MetalJesusRocks I've recently gotten into game collecting and just wanted to thank you for your videos. Whenever i need to know something about a console I'm considering buying, the first thing I do is look to see if you made a buying guide for it, and go off of your recommendations. You and the rest of the MJR crew are the reasons why I enjoy this so much and I hope to one day have a collection that would make you all proud.
I love your channel MJR. Always so wholesome. Thank you for keeping us sane in these times
So nice of you. Thanks 😎
I have to disagree about these being “underrated”. I feel like underrepresented would be a more apt term since the people who have bought these 5 really seem to love them.
Grey Cart All 5 people.
I’m just kidding. I have bought all but the Sega Saturn.
Mr Semantics has arrived in his mobile carriage.
I do think that the gamecube was underrated when it was in stores, but it has a pretty big cult following now.
The Dreamcast was an amazing system.
I know it's superficial but the colour didn't help, made it look like a toy for toddlers and young kids, also it's NOT a cube
@@TheGingerburger really? I think the Platinum, purple, etc are all iconic system colors now. If they made a switch in any of those colors then I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
Dude yeah I thought the same! My friends either only had a ps2 or gamecube or both. The very few which included my cousins owned an Xbox......after already owning a ps2 and gamecube first!
@@kevin1337ninja They do look great.
But history kinda shows that the majority of people will only ever buy black, grey or white home consoles.
Luckily now it's sorta made a comeback. Online works again and there's always been indie/homebrew games made for it
I love the Dreamcast back in the day! Really, it is a great Consol that still stands up today.
Nailed it. I collect hard for the Dreamcast, and own a modded PSP. I considered the Vita, but after this episode I'm definitely gonna dive into one. Great material as always MJR!
I have a Vita and, a PSTV. My eyes are going from all the pc work and gaming. I prefer the PSTV. Plus it’s easy to mod, so you can whitelist it to play all vita games.
I still play my Dreamcast almost every day. Playing skies of arcadia atm.
Seeing the vita at the top of this list brought me an unbelievable amount of joy. It’s such a great console and there’s so much you can do with it, especially if you own a ps3 or ps4
I don’t any games I can remote play on ps3, but I use mine a lot for remote play on my ps4
BEST D-PAD EVER
z beshears i played most of Persona 5 on Vita in remote play. Doesn't work too well with action games though.
so glad you mentioned the turbo grafx 16 personally one of my favorites
GameCube worth it for Metroid Prime and Mario Sunshine alone.
for me it was metroid prime, re remake, re0, and re4. some of the most amazing games of their time and prime is still one of the most amazing games ever. i still kick myself for getting rid of my gamecube.
And smashing drive
And Eternal Darkness, a highly underappreciated game.
Starwars rogue one and rebel strike
Smash bros
Mario kart Double dash
Viewtiful Joe
Mario Sunshine
Metroid prime 1 and 2
Zelda windwaker
MGS remake
1080 Avalanche
Eternal Darkness
F-Zero GX
Wave racer blue storm
StarFox Adventures
Phantasy star online
Resident evil 1 and 2
Unless you don’t like Metroid like me. I’d recommend double dash tho since it’s far and away the best Mario Kart game. Paper Mario was awesome and the GBA add on seals the deal.
#5 - Got at launch. Loved it dearly. #4 - Got in ‘97 while working at a game store. It was a rental unit and I paid $25 for it. #3 - I kept my controller...not sure what I’m going to do with it. #2 - Got at launch. Kept until about five years ago when I was really strapped for cash. #1 - I have two. Both are well hacked and well loved. Haha
I love my vita I have collected 70 games physically for & I’m finding new games everyday to buy they can’t kill something that’s immortal #vivalavita
Yes, and there's still SO MUCH on the PS Store for Vita, some really great deals.
I bought way to many Vita games, glad I modded mine. Allows me to play some games that I wouldn't have access to any other way like translated Japanese games :)
The biggest regret in my entire life is selling my dreamcast.
Mine is Saturn. I sold it will always regret it.
You can add an sd card to it now, connected to the cd
just buy another one lol
What killed the Vita was the price of the memory cards. You HAD to have them in order to play, but they were crazy expensive. Sony really should've done something about that, but rather than address it, they just abandoned the Vita.
They had the answer all along, the PSPGo came with 16GB of storage on it and you could also use Sony memory sticks with it. I don't know why they didn't give the Vita at least the same amount of storage; a lot of people would have bought it if they didn't need to buy a memory card right away.
It's SONY, they wanted your money.
companies and their proprietary crap!
Vitas have been sold bundled with 8g memory cards for very long and it didn't affect the sales at all.
@@thrice1987 8g isn't near enough.. 32 to 64 really needed lol wish they had 128 ones

Get one. The prices are on their way up.
I bought a great new third-party battery locally for my Vader PSP about a year ago. My original Sony battery had swollen.
Get a vita you'll love it. I have 2
Sony didn't quickly loose interest in the Vita as a whole, just in it's viability in the states. They fully embraced it in Japan for a long while.
Very true! When I went to Japan, I was SHOCKED to see how many new physical games where still on shelves.
@@MetalJesusRocks hello
I really love how it's a controller for the ps4
Ehh I wouldn't say so, they stopped releasing games for it after 3 years, in both Japan and in the west, is just that japanese third party developers loved making games for it and sold well enough to keep making games for it.
Love that you showed footage of Baten Kaitos and Tokyo Mirage Sessions. My favourite Gamecube and Wii U games.
Saturn was AMAZING. I LOVE Street Fighter Zero 3, X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Radiant Silvergun, Burning Rangers, Sonic R, Sega Ages (compilation), Sega Dream Works Yu Suzuki Vol. 1, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter.
The controller, the first party games, the fighting games...
One year later and it looks like the Amico is wet noodling it rather than spicing it up. Too bad, really. I was looking forward to it.
@@esperagothe amico was about as spicy as a glass of milk
I've never played a Vita, but I would definitely say the PSP is underrated. I absolutely love mine.
My psp is modded with over 3K games, I live playing Pokémon and Mario Kart on it
I don’t think the PSP is underrated especially if you look at sales it sold amazing
I wouldn`t say that the PSP was underrated, it was very popular with teenagers and older gamers. The PS VIta on the other hand is defo underrated
Nice feature on you in Retro Gamer magazine this month, dude!
I loved the Saturn: Virtua Fighter, Nights into Dreams, House of the Dead, Myst....Some absolute classics.
I had a Saturn and the kids who had PS laughed at me. Saturn's first party holds up far better than anything else 32 bit.
Omg I loved it as well. I got it around launch and ended up with virtua fighter 2 , Daytona USA, panzer dragoon and Night into dreams.
I remember being in 7th grade (around 2002), getting off the school bus, and running home so I could play Resident Evil: Code Veronica on Dreamcast in my basement in the dark and scare the hell out of myself. What a wonderful time.
The Dreamcast didnt let us down, We let it down...
I began gaming when i was young with a PS1. Yet i heard the stories of SEGA well. My dad's buddy brought over his megadrive and it was infact Sonic & MD that became my first gaming experience. I asked my dad for a MD. But he wanted a PS1. Eventually i got one and i loved it.
I now have a Dreamcast, and its one of my favorite consoles. In some ways i think it even defeats PS2... I am sorry we let you down, Dreamcast.
Exept for the noise you make when you read a disc, holy bejungas...
We bought into Sony's false hype of PS2 having Pixar in game graphics.
@@paulclinton6414 not me, bought a dreamcast and a ps2 with Ridge racer 5 and Tekken Tag tournament all my friends was jealous with envy, dreamcast was good, but it couldn't touch the ps2.
The games on the 5200 are good, the controllers I hate.
To be able to play such great versions of arcade games at home in 1982 was a thing of beauty.
Nick O, When I saw the video, I too thought that Metal Jesus would have included the Atari 5200...
Great list. I still have my original Vectrex from when I was a kid too!

Well the PC-Engine got an honorable mention.

I would want one of the nintendo eshop as well. There are so many games that are japan exclusives.
The insanely expensive propriety memory is what killed the vita imo.
That is just part of the problem, Sony themself was the second part.
@@paulclinton6414 yeah phone gaming is easy access it's number one because of that
@@johnlawful2272 Absolutely.

I kinda miss mine too, but there really weren't a lot of games to play... at least not for me.
The Vita was great but it came out after mobile gaming blew up, was poorly marketed and the memory cards doomed it. It was far more impressive for its time in 2012 than Switch was in 2016. Imagine if GTA had come out on it.
Love your Ghalleon puppet in the background. Would have killed to have gotten one with my pre-order.
Best selling console of all time, PS2 due to the DVD playing factor.
Yep, quite the affordable DVD player at the time.
That was never really a factor because by the end of 2000 DVD players had dropped from over £500 to under £100 and in late 2001 around the time of the Xbox release you could pick up a dvd player for £50
@@TheGingerburger
Whenever I say that a different console will never surpass the numbers of PS2, someone mentions the DVD player aspect. It's one of those catch 22s.
Also it was a space saver, 2 in 1 factor was a big deal.
@@xflarearcadia1766 the reason the PS2 sold so many units is because Sony had gain the public trust with the PlayStation with it's great games, backwards compatible so customers and parents didn't feel fucked over, adding value to budget conscious people.if you bought a PS2 back in 2000/2001 you knew you could get a stack of second hand PS1 games at a sale for dirt cheap to hold you over till there were second hand PS2 games on the market

The Turbografx 16 was another underrated system. Its games were fun to play and had useful peripherals such as an TurboCD which let you play disk games and CDs. It was ahead of its time.
If you meant underrated in terms of sales, here’s my list (no particular order):
1. Turbo Grafx 16
2. Wii U
3. Sega Master System
4. Nintendo GameCube
5. Dreamcast
I personally thought the Saturn wasn’t very good; it was expensive, had a terrible frame rate with first person shooters (I.e. Doom, Hexen) and the 3D was done poorly compared with the PlayStation/N64 (due to it being very hard to develop for). The controller didn’t suit my big hands either. It 100% should’ve had backwards compatibility too.
I remember the Vectrex. My brothers friend at the time had one and it was fun to play.
