    I actually had an AES when I was a teenager in the 90s. Saved up and bought a used one through the mail. I remember ordering it over the phone -- probably found out about it in a game magazine since the Internet wasn't really a thing for most people at the time. One of my all-time favorite systems, for sure. The sound and graphics were extremely impressive compared to what we had on consoles back then.

    Many years ago, I found a classified ad selling a complete in box AES with Fatal Fury and Last Resort for $200. It turns out it was a married couple who bought the system for their 10 year old son, not realizing that it didn't have the "Mario" games that he wanted to play! I wasted no time taking it off their hands. lol...still though, it blows my mind that a 10 year old kid was rocking a Neo Geo.

If I just wanted to buy the game I would get it on the PS store for like 40x times cheaper. But, for me and most collectors its about having history/unique items that make it desirable. Plus, a lot of these collectors things are only going up on value, so it can be seen as an investment.

      Probably a good thing you never got one. I remember games being $250AUD retail. An NES game retailed for about $90AUD for a AAA title, with older titles and the non-AAA's going for around $40 - $60AUD. So for the price of ONE NEO GEO game, you could pick up 4 or 5 NES games including some AAA new releases in there. And - $250AUD in 1990 equates to $473.17 in 2016. So it's the equivelent of paying almost $500AUD for one game.

I was heartbroken when he sold his collection to buy an engagement ring for some dumb slut who wound up cheating on him within 5 years anyway. It was completely out of the question for my mom to spend that kind of absurd money on games. I could barely get her to buy snes cartridges.

    I just built my self an OMVS, and I love it!! Taitoc labs, and Tian Feng made this and released it open source to the world. Laser bear makes a case to put it all in. All you need is a MV-1C arcade board, and some slight soldering skills to fix the sound and you have a Neo Geo arcade console! Plenty of guides on TH-cam showing how to to do this. You can buy the boards pre-made, or if you have the skill and time you can order the boards from OSH park and build them. The pre made boards are really nicely priced and well worth the it. I built my own because I wanted to, it’s just my jam, and very satisfying (so much SMD, mmmm yes please). Honestly, I probably spent just as much on building it than I would’ve getting it pre made. Any way, I love it! I haven’t read the comments, but probably somebody has mentioned this project. I just wanted to give it a bump because these guys made it and released it to the world and that makes them awesome! I can FINALLY get my Neo Geo on!

    I remember reading articles about NeoGeo when it first came out in my monthly subscription to Gamepro magazine back in the early 90s, it was like the Fender Strat from Wayne’s World. Man...my friends and I laughed about it because of the freakin cartridges’ memory size being Soooo much bigger than everything else currently available at the time. Genesis and SNES touted “16Mb huge!” Meanwhile NeoGeo started at like 45Mb with a max of 330, we didn’t even know it went up that high! Considering the cost of memory at that time, it really explains (mostly) the price tag on those carts. My father didn’t even laugh when I showed a magazine ad of NeoGeo to him and jokingly suggested I wanted it for Christmas-he just instantly became visibly annoyed, shook his head and walked away without saying a word. Good stuff.

    The Neo Geo AES was one of my most sought after console. From the sexy look, to the arcade perfect games, large satisfying cartridges, and the arcade like joy sticks, I really wanted this thing. But alas, I can't afford it so I ended up buying a Neo Geo CD with both the Model 2 Joy sticks (two of them) and two of the regular control pads. Games included were Samurai Spirits, KOF 94, and Quiz Fighter. For an extra 130, I picked up King of Fighter 97, 98, some other random game, and Top Hunter (total 730 CAD)! Going to start collecting more and more. Going to focus on my Vita, Saturn, and NeoGeoCd games once I have the chance.

    • @ManulTransmission

      Are the graphics just as good on the Neo Geo CD? Is the problem really only the load times? For me that is worth it since the AES has always been so expensive, but I'd love to have anything that's as close graphics and game playing wise. The load times are pretty slow on some Saturn games but the performance blows away the same title on Playstation (for some games like the Real Bout series).
      I passed up a few chances to get a Neo Geo CD on my recent trip to Japan but now I'm looking at them on ebay.

    After 25 years of loyal gaming service my Neo Geo AES has finally died with the dreaded red screen of death!! I will now undertake the expensive task of replacing the system as I have a large collection of now valuable cartridges for the system. I highly recommend one of these systems if you are a fan of arcade games... very little diversity in way of genres for the system (mainly fighters or shooters) but the quality was extremely high. A niche console but quality nevertheless.

    I've had an MVS 2 slot cabinet for about 10 years now. I bought it from a skateland that was going out of business for 250 bucks because it had Metal Slug 1 and Samurai Showdown 1. I was so stoked when I got it home, opened it, and realized the games came out It's all modded out now, competition sticks and buttons, low resistance switches, pause button, credit button relocation, internal shelving replacing the coin boxes. Couldn't be happier, it's still one of the favorite things in my video game collection. Great video Metal Jesus!

    So much nostalgia with these Neo Geo games. Never owned the console myself but I sure wanted to. I remember thinking as a kid it would be like spending all the time I wanted in the arcade without the quarters

  • @andychow5509
    @andychow5509 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    As a kid, I remember just seeing those prices and not getting it. Yes, it may have been the same quality as a real arcade cabinet, but those were NeoGeo cabinets, which had the cheap games that were like 2 games per quarter. The graphics were nothing compared to most other cabinets. Only as an adult did I come to appreciate Metal Slug, but my local arcade probably didn't even have that one.

    • @tarstarkusz
      @tarstarkusz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Most of it is just marketing BS, but back in the very early days of computing, everything was measured in bits, especially ROM and RAM chips. It's also a race to the bottom. If one ISP does it, then they all have to do it. There's also that magical phrase "up to."
      The computer industry has been full of lies (deception, more like). They couldn't even be honest about the size of a monitor! Nearly ALL 14" monitors were about 13", for example.

    • @DefyingZero
      @DefyingZero 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      tarstarkusz So basically back in the 90s, bits was like the biggest thing before MB and GB in gaming? Can you fill me on this please, its weird (sort of).

    • @tarstarkusz
      @tarstarkusz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In the early days, ram was usually 1 bit wide and so you would need 8 or 9 4164 chips to get a single 64kB bank. Each chip was 64kilobits. This was back in the days of the dual inline package or DIPs as they were called. But as to video games, they used to bit so the number would sound big. A 128 kilobyte game sounded MUCH bigger and better as a 1 megabit game. Unfortunately, once one asshole does that, they all start doing it. It's nothing more than marketing bullshit. Which sounds better, having a single dollar, or 100 cents. That is literally what they are doing.

    • @DefyingZero
      @DefyingZero 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      tarstarkusz Wow, so it was just for marketing, lol. After hearing this, that numbers in the Neo Geo cases seem stupid now.

    2:55 It outputted pure RGB video, but unfortunately for the USA, and many other NTSC only regions, we had a hard time displaying that perfect RGB signal on our TV's. Of course now we have some nice options, such as the Framemeister, OSSC, to display RGB through a SCART connector and display out as HDMI HD. Or use an HD Retrovision component (YPbPr) cable to tap into the RGB signal and output onto a CRT or HDTV with component inputs.

      I was hoping somebody had corrected this in the two years since this video came out :)
      The same trick is used when ISP advertise their speeds. "200 MEG" etc., meaning 200 Megabits which is like 25 MB.
      Incidentally you can usually tell what is being referred to by the notation. "MB" = Megabyte and "Mb" = Megabit. So again ISPs would notate it as "200 Mb/s" in the hope you mistake it as 200 Megabytes per second.

    • @herranton
      @herranton 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Your isp isn't trying to trick you. Back way before your time, we measured transfer speed in a measurement called _baud._ My first modem was a 2400 baud modem. When it would connect with my isp it would perform a handshake where it would make a bunch of beeps and buzzes. Basically, they (the modems) were agreeing on what protocols and speed to use when talking to each other. The _baud_ number referred to how many times my modem could switch its state per second. Each time it switched it was pushing one _bit_ through. So my modem could handle 2400 _bits_ per second (and in fact, _baud_ simply means bits per second). The fastest consumer analog modems maxed out at 52,000 baud, which at the time felt like it was blazing fast. Modern modems use bits per second too. We have always used bits per second.
      And when modems were first being introduced, no one could have told you that 8 bits making a byte would be a thing. In fact, if the Chinese had designed everything there would probably be 16 or 32 bits in a byte because it makes more sense with respect to simplified Chinese. There are eight bits in a byte because that is just about the variation you need to use all the English characters and punctuation. If you simplify it down, you could use a 6 bit per byte system, and in fact many early systems did.

      @alfredofettuccine9425 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      herranton1979
      The beeps and buzzes were not from the modem, but from the computer internal speaker. It was a feature to let you know you were going online. It was important to know back in the day when people used to pay for internet access by the minute. The feature could be disabled in the modem settings. Most people didn’t know and just learned to live with the annoying screeching sounds...

    My grandmother got me a Neo Geo Gold AES system for my birthday back in either 1990 or 1991(I just remember having it before the Terminator 2 movie came out in theaters). I did not get a game for it as often as I did a Genesis or NES/SNES game as Neo Geo AES games retailed for $299/each. About 3 - 4 years later, I traded it with someone for a Sega Genesis + Sega CD + about 300 games. heh... I will say, I regretted getting rid of the thing. ---- However, many many years later, I picked up another complete, boxed Neo Geo AES Gold system off of eBay. I still have that system to this day and considerably more games than I used to have back in the 90's.
    On a side note, John talks about how Neo Geo US & JPN games are interchangeable, but the game(s) will run in whatever their native region is. The US Neo Geo AES Gold system I have now does not have a UNIBIOS installed... yet regardless if I play US or JPN games, the games always play in the US language/region. As for Neo Geo games prices, they were becoming expensive when this video was released in 2016... but today(2022), most US(Dog Tag) games start around $300+ and most of the more desirable titles average around $2,000 - $5,000... even then, there's a lot over $10k. There was even a US Metal Slug 1 that sold not that long ago for nearly $60k !!!

      Neo Geo launched at $643 in America and PS3 was $499. Neo Geo at $643 in the 90s was insane for them to think it would sell well back then that'd be like shelling out $1000 for a console in todays market.The SNES and Sega were like $200 at the time why they thought they could comeout with a system that had a $400 markup and do well I'll never understand. It's documented also that Sony didn't make a profit on the PS3 til they dropped the price.We had the Neo Geo arcade at one of our local restaurants in Louisiana and I loved playin it but unless your family had a ton of disposable income back then no way a kid could talk his parent's into getting the home console for them back then.

    What's the best way to sell neo geo games? I have the US AES version of Ninja Commando and was not sure if listing and shipping via eBay was the best route?

      most likely that - forums like neo geo com are toxic and Facebook neo geo groups are not always beginner friendly either

    I really enjoyed this video. Neo Geo MVS is one of the first things I collected for when I started collecting video games. I'm missing just one more MVS game for the full set. (pleasure goal)
