They are both good but they second ones skin just looks so much more 'real' with the tone, shading and highlights in it. I feel like the 2nd colouring has so much more depth and reality in it then the first
Commenter84 I prefer the first one because it looks better to me. why make reality a factor on what I enjoy? it's an artstyle. it doesn't have to be super realistic.
Yes I know that, but a person will still have shadows no matter how pale they are, they might be a blueish shadow or very slight grey-ish shadow. You can shade any skin tone. The first tone looks nice, I just prefer how she has added the highlights in the second tone, showing depth..
The first one looks more cartoony, I guess? Pop culture and imaginative. The second looks more realistic and tied together. I like both, but for my drawings that are always all over the place, I'm definitely gonna enjoy my two free months of happiness.
I adore both of these drawings, you're very talented (in my opinion at least) and both the colour schemes look great. From an aesthetic point of view, I'd have to pick the first drawing, just because I'm a sucker for pastel hues. The second one is definitely more cohesive and professional looking, the lineart fits really well with the earthy tones. Overall, and amazing video Waffles! :)
How about a question to shake things up? What kind of drawing tutorial would you like to see from me? I've made a couple different ones and I'd love the input. :) Thanks for reading.
well I'm 196K and... 393-th... or something :D so Congrats Waffles with almost 200K :D in 8 months after :) i find your videos EXTREMELY useful!! :) and your voiceover is great and adorable :3 have a nice tasty waffle : >
The first one looks like a sketchbook idea turned into an actual drawing. The second one looks like a character with a name, a purpose and a fleshed out story.
At the end of the video I looked at both drawings and though the first was much better, then I noticed the combination of colors of the second one makes a good harmony in the drawing, it's not just random colors it all is related and makes sense ! interesting video :)
color theory isn't too hard to understand. The two drawings just have different feelings. once people unserstand the psycology of the colors it's easier to pick colors for specific projects. Adobe color is a great resource to use if you are trying to make cohesive color schemes btw.
Wow - I didn't think it would be all that better, but at the end when you put the two side by side, I could really see the difference! The second looks more vibrant and everything fits together ^^
I like doing that tip: taking colours from moody images that you want to replicate. I usually do it with photography but it's real helpful for illustrations! I also have default colour, so don't worry!! XD
at first I saw the first coloring and im like "thats not so bad!" then you compared it to the next coloring "thats soooo much better!"......it was amazing! great job
I dont know if I ever said this, but I have a kitty named Waffles. I came across your channel after he was born and we named him :3 He's my precious baby, born premature and I had to hand feed him every 30 mins for eight weeks before he got healthy. He's nearly a year old now and sucha little rascal but I adore him. I LOVE your channel, artwork and of course, the name lol ^^
The second one looks so much better honestly, even though the first one also looked really cute. I liked the shading on the first one better but the color scheme of the second came out better. I'm definitely going to check out the skill share website, thanks for that too :D It's been awesome watching you improve over the years btw!
Color Theory is a wonderful thing to know about. I feel like knowing it helps art look a bit more realistsic, as shown by your second drawing of the girl. I've known it since I was fairly young and thank my magic powers of color perception everyday!
This was an incredible video! Efter the first colouring I thought"well she can't top that, ske doesn't need colortheory" an then you made the biggest improvement! So cool to see you improve so quickly! I really liked this video :)
Dang, Waffles! I also struggle with color theory, and now I really want to try out Skillshare. Your first color job really wasn't bad, but the second one was awesome!
herberguligulushhhhh! I agree. I adore both and love how much the colours stand out on the first and the colours are so nature-y and earthy, but on the second, it's kind of calm and peaceful with a lot of complimenting colours. I have a christmas song stuck in my head from my mum and it is 'fairy tale of new york.'. but I'm watching this video around christmas so that explains it.
I put this video off for like a month and forgot about it. Ugh, I wish would've watched it now! Also, totally gonna sign up with the promo! 😍Gorgeous illustrations! I like the 2nd too!
I agree that the second one was better. first of all, she does seem like she might be a responsible/hard working character, and the second one reflects that more. the first one just looks like a pastel-y princess.
In graphics design we learn color theory in terms of complimentary, contrast, and feeling. So we would look at logos and stuff and try to explain what the designer was trying to convey. Like why did they choose this red or that blue. It helps me with my art cause then accent colors are easier to find, like blue jewelry on a dessert princess. The pallette would have a lot of browns and oranges, and since the opposite color of orange is blue, a little blue jewelry or a slightly bluer sky can help the character stand out more and the colors don't blend into each other too much. Looking at a basic 8 color color wheel helps to learn the basics for these. And then WHAM, cool little spoofs of a different color do much more than you think. It's also a pretty fun to realize these techniques in other works of art, it's like "hey, they use that technique too, OwO"
I like yours better. It is just very creative and I really like all the colors, they go really good together. But, it doesn’t matter how you draw, it just matters that you have fun drawing it!
They both look great, but my eyes are drawn more to the second one. The colors compliment each other and are more cohesive on the second one. And OMG! it's free!!!!! YAY! I have never attended an art class in my life so it is probably about time XD Thank you so much for giving us this opportunity
Ahh, this is awesome! It's crazy how much difference the colors create. Both of the drawings looked so different and gave off very different vibes . :)
Both of them look great! But yeah, the second one, feels better, like the colors belong! By the way thanks for the 2 months on skillshare! Just signed in with it!! :D
7:02 they look like sisters who get paid to dance for the royalty and the wealthy They are so good at dancing that the people they perform for end up offering to pay more for them to dance another time
When i do backgrounds i usuallually take the color thats most of on the character i drew and then take the color thats on the opposite side of the color wheel of that color. For exampel: I drew a character that had allot of puprle and blue therefor i made the background a light saturated green and a desaturated yellow wich are both on the opposite side of purple and blue. I believe theese are called complimentary colors.
You should like sell merch of this drawing as a sticker or pin or iron on thing idk but i love it and would buy it in a heartbeat its so gorgeous (the second one is my favorite and the one i would prefer to get but i love both you do an amazing job)
Both look amazing, however, the first art looks like a drawing, where as the second art looks like it could be seen in real life or perhaps a film. The difference is there, but no in a bad way. You pulled this off sooo well!!💗
I love both of them! Each one is unique and beautiful. The second one has the darker tone all around and looks really neat, while the first one is lighter and the hair and skin share the same colors, making it unique but not *as* pretty. Both of them are super cute tho so I mean :P
It's really either one can be professional because both of them have compliment colors or mix really well. atleast for your example actually is a good example of color theory since it brings in realistic color to the drawing. Though for my technique it's usually find a good color and use its values and give it a pop out color to make it more interesting.
I love both :') the girls hair is so nice in the first and I really likes the different colors. the second matches more and I loved that too. they were both different but they're so cool and I loved each equally :D
I like the after better. but not because of the technical colors, but more because I thought the colors from the mosaic fit the character/drawing better.
Huh, I suck at coloring but I always enjoyed it and am willing to learn more. Anatomy is the bane of my existence. I like both but for some reason I like the skirt in the 2nd one more, but the hair on the 1st one more...
I think they both look good. Before has me personality to it but after meshes better. I like the hair of before size it's like a personal choice but the skirt of after just looks better.
Have my like, and my sub, and I'm definetly using your code to check those color theory classes, I need them more than oxigen. Also, I really really love both results, the pink haired one is so fun and querky, and the other one looks so natural, it's amazing. I can't wait to be able to do that.
I like the second one. ;D And that technique of cloning colors is brilliant. I am a longtime subscriber to skillshare, so of course I went off and watched this course. I think it's a great intro to color theory except for one thing: it uses the outdated/nonscientific primary color scheme red/blue/yellow instead of magenta/cyan/yellow. Since you can make red from magenta, it's not truly a primary color, but nothing can make magenta. That means it's the true primary. Otherwise, there were some awesome tips, although I felt that in her first example for cloning colors she really missed the mark by not using the cherry red that dominated the original piece. Also, she didn't show us her colored illustration! What?! But I continue to try to learn from everything I see and there were some excellent tips there. Thanks for the link!
I do something similar, except minus the extra filter step. I just eyedropper, plop it on as base color, and slowly eyedrop and paint around the colors + some dodge and burrrnn. :P I have read (and watch) that some people get mad when they notice their colors get... heavily sampled. Not the painting techniques or styles, but colors, and... the way they're used? I dunno how a person can say someone stole from color ramps alone, at least. (unless pixel art, but people don't complain about that kinda stuff as much for pixels...)
I like the first colouring more, and I think it is because the colours feel softer. I can see why the second one would be overall more pleasing to a lot of people though.
I like the first skirt and hair and the skin of the second :D I think both are good, the only difference for me is just that the first one is more like a pinkish.
I REALLY love how you added all the freckles on her. You are honestly the first EVER person I’ve seen draw freckles on a characters. Yes, I’m socially awkward.
the second one looks better i think YOU DRAW SOOOOOOOOOO GOOD I WOULD HAVE TOTALY MESSED IT UP I CAN'T DRAW SHADING AND FOLDS AND WRINKLES AND ARGHHH EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I gotta check this website out soon. Sounds so helpful and fun I love the drawing, the earthy tones and the pallete remind me of Loish. :) Or maybe it is the dreads.. the only thing I can critique is the hand that is supposed to be behind looks off and I keep thinking she has two arms attached to one shoulder. xD
2:50 that's an integral part to learning that the education system of today seems to lack. application. people ask "well how i am ever going to use [insert thing here] in my everyday life?" and the answer is along the lines of "well, i dont think you will, but its what we have to teach." but, if we are given application in the lesson, it then isnt just regurgitating information, its using that information productively, in a way that would stick longer than just till the end of the week so that you get an A on the test.
Ahhh I'm new to your channel but I am already in love with your art and your videos! It's all so interesting and pretty and easy to follow, and it's awesome listening to you talking out your thought process! Keep up the amazing work! I'm here to stay now :)
Both look nice, the original looks more like an illustration, though the hair colours don't quite work with the rest, but it still looks nice. The second one looks more natural and flows more. But it works either way, it helps with preference as well :)
I have this one friend I would always show my drawings to them. And one day they said that I knew color theory well cause parentally my colors usually compliment each other, but I didn’t even know what color theory is XD and I’m still not totally sure but mehhh.
I definitely prefer the second one! The colours compliment each other better, and it just looks really nice!
isabelle maya douthwaite yes it also looks more realistic and blends together more well
You should do a challenge where you have to make a person that looks as realistic as possible, except, instead of a regular head, it's a waffle.
hahahahah, you really earned your title, Commander!
+DrawingWiffWaffles but please do this! That would be so fun!

Commenter84 I prefer the first one because it looks better to me. why make reality a factor on what I enjoy? it's an artstyle. it doesn't have to be super realistic.
What if the person is albino or really pale then what? You can make it look real with correct shading and shadows
Yes I know that, but a person will still have shadows no matter how pale they are, they might be a blueish shadow or very slight grey-ish shadow. You can shade any skin tone.
The first tone looks nice, I just prefer how she has added the highlights in the second tone, showing depth..

Both look nice, the original looks more like an illustration, though the hair colours don't quite work with the rest, but it still looks nice. The second one looks more natural and flows more. But it works either way, it helps with preference as well :)
I like them both but I like the second skirt better by a lot.
I have this one friend I would always show my drawings to them. And one day they said that I knew color theory well cause parentally my colors usually compliment each other, but I didn’t even know what color theory is XD and I’m still not totally sure but mehhh.
YES HELLO HOW DO YOU DO THOSE FRECKLES?!
I MUST KNOW.
The second one looks so much more distinctive as a character.
i love both of them but i think i like the second one a bit more!
