A minute in an I already love this woman! My mother taught me as a kid how to do brakes, oil and fluids. She also taught me a lot of home remedies and being good with my hands. I’m thankful for that because it lead me to where I am today. I love working with my hands and tinkering. I’m here today because I haven’t touched drum brakes in over 20 years. Need a refresher. All of my vehicles have been disk. Super easy. I’ve always found these to be slightly more daunting.
FWIW, anytime I go to Home Improvement or Auto shops, I’ll always try to talk to the woman that is working. 9/10 they’re on their A game. They know where everything is and I find them to be more helpful and knowledgeable than the men. Always pleasant and patient. Shout out to all of you bad ass women! 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼

Thank god for this video...my wife's cars drum brakes are starting to wear down and I told her I could replace them and said no wait until they start squeaking I'm like no babe that's dangerous....not only that but I like gaining experience from doing something like this and saving money
My wife is gonna learn sooner or later bad brakes dont last long at all

Drum breaks almost never come with the metal tabs that squeak. They do sometimes squeak when the drums surface is really damaged like the ones in the video but driving like that is dangerous

For disc brakes only. Once I hear the warning whistle, as I call it. I start saving money up for the brakes. Depending on how much you drive, or brake,,should be about a month. 2 Easy. But not guaranteed. Gather up the money. And if I have the money already, I go ahead and buy the brakes and throw them in the trunk. I personally will let the warning whistle go for a while. But as soon as the brakes grab hard, within the next seven or or eight days, I replace my brakes.

I've never had to adjust a brake cable doing that job unless the brake cable was too loose. And to adjust the brake cables on a system like that, you put on the new brakes, you close the adjustment so that the brake drum slides on uncomfortably but not too tight. Take the vehicle to where you got a lot of room and drive backwards up to about 10 or 15 miles per hour and then slam on the brakes. That will automatically adjust the shoes inside of the brake drum. Caution. Skilled drivers only

I just did this on a '67 F100 last weekend. I watched the video to see if I missed anything. What I noticed is the truck you were working on is far more rusted than mine and its nearly 60 years old. This one has been in OK and TX since it was made. Need to do something about all that rust.

Just put new wheel cylinder brake pads drum on driver side.
The old one had a yellow plastic spacer in between the drum and hub..
Turned the wheel bearing and drum get a grinding sound 90% sure it's not the shoes. Pretty sure it's the backing plate.
Do I just put a new spacer or is there a way I can figure out where the grinding is on the backing plate and drum?
Do you have a video showing this process??

I just removed both my rear brake drums for the first time ever! My secret. I used my $200 rubber sledge hammer from "Mac's Hardware." It is a 12 lb. Deadblow hammer that is 36" long. The drum had rust welded itself to the shaft that centers your wheel on the hub. 5 good whacks all over and it came right off!

Everything is so well explained, except for the use of eye protection before starting the job. Its really really important to work eye protection while working in a car, especially on brakes, as you will never know when those springs will fly off and hit your eyes. There is a high chance of dust and fluids from the brake getting into the eyes. So please, please always wear eye protection before messing up with your car.

My truck has the stock push nuts on the drums at around 130K, but the drums look great and I was almost tempted to not even replace the pads. But I'm in Texas, have owned the truck since 20K, and don't brake aggressively.
The slave cylinders both weep around the seals though, so I'm going to have to order them and go back in.
