  • Believe it or not, you can do too much of a good thing!
    Over brushing can cause gum recession.
    Improper flossing can damage or injure your gum tissue.
    The Waterpik can be damaging if used improperly or excessively.
    Mouthwash can kill the good bacteria too!

    Retired dentist here. Totally agree. Whenever I saw a new patient, I could always tell if they were left or right handed, by the amount of recession and abrasion visible on left and right. We naturally brush the opposite side, longer and better.

      🤣🤣🤣 Mine have always been surprised by my even numbers! 🤣 Apparently, being ambidextrous and brushing with opposite hands for opposite sides of the mouth throws them when the numbers came back the same. Same with the dental hygienists. 😅
      Sadly, hasn't stopped the wisdom teeth only growing in on one side, though. 🤦🏽‍♂️

    I've been told by a dental hygenist to only use whitening products a few times a week.
    My favorite toothpaste is actually non-abrasive, it's by Weldental and it's basically a tablet made of soap, calcium phosphate, xylitol, and flavorings. It works well, provided you brush for several minutes twice a day. You don't need an abrasive toothpaste to get good oral health, and fluoride is just as bioavailable in a mouthwash as in toothpaste.

    Do you have any idea what the abrasiveness of carifree CTx3 gel is? My 5 year old son has had a lot of trouble with tooth decay, adverse reaction to his vaccines not me being lazy, so I brush his teeth after breakfast and supper and after lunch if the meal was what I call "sticky" in the sense that it might stick to his teeth. I always soften his toothbrush in hot water and use only three fingers holding the toothbrush. I lie him down on the island with towels under his shoulders so I can really see what I'm doing. How do you find that balance between leaving food on your teeth and wearing them down with all the brushing?

    Very informative video. I've always brushed hard, but I recently started easing up the pressure, even though I never had gum recession. That is, until I got Invisalign. It not only is causing gum recession, but also the black triangle you mentioned. I cannot get in to see my dentist for another four weeks. Should I be worried about these problems and not having a checkup right away? I heard that gum recession is irreversible unless you get grafts for thousands of dollars. Also, with Invisalign, you are supposed to brush and floss after every meal. Is this too much, or is it acceptable for the 15-month treatment period?

So, I've only been making things worse. 🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️

    I use a low abrasive toothpaste (RDA 30) called Curaprox Enzycal 950. I tried Dr Nemeth's suggestion of water only but it wasn't for me. I also use their manual CS 5460 toothbrush in the morning and an electric toothbrush in the evening. Again, I tried using an Xtra soft manual toothbrush twice a day with water only and using a 'sweep down on the top and sweep up on the bottom' technique as suggested by Dr Nemeth, but unfortunately it didn't shift all the plaque for me. So, I did a bit more research. The 45 degree angle is key when using a toothbrush. I personally do small circles rather than a back and forth vibratory motion (Bass method). Ultimately it depends on your gum health. I have what's been described by a Perio as thin, fragile tissue possibly due to genetics, ageing & overzealous brushing in my 20s. I have areas of gum recession and small black triangles. I'm not going to lie, it upsets me because I've always thought I had meticulous oral hygiene and have spent thousands on orthodontic work only to be faced with recession that is progressing despite doing all the right things now. Unfortunately there are unmodifiable factors at play too like genetics & ageing that I can't control. For anyone with rapid plaque & tartar build-up and gum recession like me I would suggest regular professional cleans, a waterpik, rinsing the mouth out with as well as drinking lots of water throughout the day & chewing Xylitol gum after main meals and avoiding snacking. I even introduced a 0.05% chlorhexidine (antimicrobial) mouthwash into my routine but you have to be careful because it can lead to reversible staining. Also, it's something that should generally be recommended by a dentist or perio before you use it. Hope all this info has helped someone out there in a similar situation to me.

      Nowadays some of the dentists are saying Chlorhexidine over use is causing problems by killing off the good bacteria.

      I have similar conditions and Problems.
      Therefore my question, do you just do the small circles or afterwards the sweeping up /sweeping down as well?
      And which Kind of Electric toothbrush do you usw? :)

    • @jheckmann
      @jheckmann 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A vet here on YT explained that the reason your teeth are polished after a cleaning is to remove the tiny scratches left by the tools used, which will attract plaque - which seems to be why plaque accumulates quickly between teeth where they haven't been polished. I wouldn't chew any kind of gum or use any kind of mouthwash especially chlorhexidine. We've all been sold a bill of goods with braces, metal bands and extractions rather than a jaw expander.

    I'm 23 and I'm here because I had a health scare where I thought I had gum disease because I felt an itchyness at my gums and a tingling sensation towards the bottom of my jaw. I ended up going to the dentist and everything was fine. No gingivitis or periodontitis. They did notice some irritation and came to the conclusion that I was flossing too hard and I used the waterpik incorrectly.

    What do you think of Listerine Mouthwash? I heard it could cause cancer because it has bensoat, which is not good. What do you think?

    • @awakeandalive4248
      @awakeandalive4248 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Listerine and practically all mouthwash can kill the good bacteria and if you have dry mouth it can be very harsh on your mouth tissue, hydrogen peroxide is a better option but you only need a little bit I put maybe an ounce in the water reservoir of my waterpick that holds 20 ounces of water and I can definitely see and feel the benefits my teeth are whiter and my gums and mouth tissue also feels healthy and my saliva glands seemed to produce more saliva and that helps a lot in reducing mouth dryness, I think people that complain about hydrogen peroxide is because they use too much, the only times I would diluted it half and half is if I had cold sores or accidentally bit my mouth tissue other than that a little bit is all that is needed.

    I've brushed my teeth the same way all of my life. Only started noticing recession in my mid 40s. Gum disease now at age 57.
    Gum recession and gum disease are caused by microbes. Better to treat the infection rather than blame the patient. If cows, chickens, and pigs can be prescribed antimicrobials as prophylactics, why not give them to humans, too? You might even save some lives by preventing heart disease. The jugular is right there, after all. But then again, doctors blame patients for that too. You eat too much saturated fat, etc... Stop blaming the patient and prescribe antimicrobials to save teeth, and even lives.
