Almost 9 months sober. I was in Italy recently with my wife who enjoys wine from time to time. I didn’t drink at all despite some confused looks from those around us. I missed nothing at all by avoiding alcohol.
I used to drink tons of alcohol. My Italian father made wine. Beer, I drank lots. I slowly developed some kind of liver pain and I felt physically sick after taking a drink. I had liver tests except a biopsy. Liver tests were "normal." So I decided to stop drinking alcohol completely. And at 60 yrs old + and not taking in any alcohol I feel a lot better and no more liver pain!
Great video. Just a note, rum and cognac fall under the same category and I understand you didn't want to go into too much detail so I leave it here in the comments as a sidenote. Both rum and cognac have no added sugar most of the times. Under certain gi (geographical indications) rum is allowed to have small amounts added after distillation and cognac actually allows up to 7gr of sugar per little after distillation afaik. As one of the owners of a brewery, I could be expected to be a beer drinker. And yet I typically drink only 2 beers 🍻 a month, and only one at a session. And I almost never drank hard liquor. So I was surprised a few years ago to find that I had fatty deposits in my liver. Only recently through watching videos from doctors did I come to understand how that could be. So am now reducing sugar & carbs. I may still drink about one beer a month. But otherwise will stick to limited amounts of gin without any sugary mixers.
I can confirm about the gin. for the 4 years I was an alcoholic and for the best part of that time I was drinking only gin as it was the cheapest and I was drinking alot of it. easaliy going through a 750ml bottle a day and I never put on weight. I belive that if i was drinking the same amount in beer that I would be a 250kg+, and a dead man, I'm supprised im still alive to be frank... I am _so_ fortunate! I come from a family of severe drinkers (my mother was an alcoholic) and I don't _like_ the stuff. My only source of alcohol is the alcohol in my K'fir. And I'm not about to be too worried about that.
I can’t limit myself to 1 or 2 per day. It me 50 years to realize that. I have occasional pangs, but they go away fast because I know how bad it is for me.
They say once you quit caffeine you actually have more energy since there's no caffeine crash to factor in. Longterm health effects is another matter and I too would like Dr. Ekberg to do a video on that.
I drank heavy years ago. Quit for years and tried light drinking but found it thought consuming so just avoid alcohol altogether. Pointless and detremental to drink or even smoke pot.
Alcohol has lots of phosphorous in it which, in too high of dosage, will cause the digestive system, liver, kidneys, and intestines to not absorb nutrients and exhaust by-products properly while digesting food and other suppliments.
In Mediterranean culture, exposure to some wine mixed with abundant water starts in childhood, perhaps as alternative to milk. I personally don't recall being ever drunk in my almost seventy years of existence, and yes, no beer tummy...
I stopped drinking alcohol in 1990. Best thing I ever did for myself. I despise alcohol for all the people that I know that died from it. I never drank much but any is too much.
I'm a beer kind of girl, but since it's not the greatest thing for me I choose not to drink at all, hard liquor I've never been a fan of, it burns my throat

1 to 2 drinks a day x 5days = 5 to 10 drinks a week. Because I don't drink during weekdays, it mean I can enjoy few glasses of my whiskey on the weekend. Now keto is becoming more fun. Thanks Dr Ekberg.
I am cutting weight yes but it's too slow compared to what I have done for a year. I have followed all your instructions to the dot but I am losing to little in weight! I have lost only 20kgs from 110kgs to 90 in a whole year on keto, fasting, cardio and HIIT as you taught us.!! Frank
It's ok, I lost 27 kilograms in 4 years, I was 110 kgs in mid 2018, the time I stopped all types of alcohol, processed foods, sugar, juices and all bad / fast foods, now body health challenges have dropped to below 20 percent, which I think is ok at my age of 68 years .
Dr Ekberg, I learned so much from your video. It’s short but clear, we really like it. There is one question from me, some people say alcohol may cause esophagus cancer, is this true ? Say if two to three glasses of red wine 🍷 in a week, will this be a problem?
thanks for this, its nice to see that it's possible to be healthy but still live within some "social norms" with the right choices. a little sad about beer being compared to a donut though lol.
Dr. Sten Ekberg I try to look for beers that are very low in carb such as bud select 55, or michelob ultra. I’m not sure how good or bad they are but I’ll be doing more research on this.
Drink suggestion! You could make a coffee drink with vodka, brewed coffee, milk of choice(oat for example) and stevia 😀 So happy to hear that a couple of glasses of wine won’t mess up my health!
Sounds like a white Russian. I would probably use heavy cream for such an occasion. 😜Just make sure that you give yourself at least two non-drinking days per week😇
I’ve switched to vodka, sparkling mineral water with the juice of fresh limes and lemons. A spoonful of stevia or some fresh mint leaves is nice too. I used to be quite a heavy drinker but since doing Keto and IF, I drink every couple of weeks and my hangovers are way less since I switched to this drink instead of sugary wines and beers. Wish I’d have known all this stuff years ago!
Yes I just accodentally made this at home before a night out. I figured if I got merry at home on homemade pure drink I’d only need one junk drink in the bar sipped slowly. Moderate alcohol consumption has been shown to reduce both the acute insulin secretions and the "Long" phase secretions. This is probably the mechanism for the statistical findings that link 1-2 drinks a day to increased longevity. BUT stick with Dry Wines and Zero Carb Lite Beers...to "lean into" as much benefit as possible.
