Grinding Teeth (Bruxism) - A Major Cause of Gum Recession

  • Bruxism, or grinding teeth is one of the major causes of gum recession. This condition is also known as TMJ. Grinding teeth at night can cause the teeth to shift, move and become more likely to recede.
When you clench or grind your teeth, you put pressure on the blood vessels that supply nourishment to the gum tissue and the bone. This causes it to become more fragile and makes the teeth more susceptible to recession or loss.
WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS OF BRUXISM?
Age - it is common in younger children but they will usually grow out
    of it by maturity.
Personality - Anger and frustration as well as aggressive,
competitive or overactive personalities may increase the
    chance of grinding teeth.
Medications - Medications, such as some anti-depressants, caffeine,
alcohol, smoking or recreational drugs can increase your risk
    of bruxism.
Stress - Increased apprehension or worry can lead to teeth grinding.
    Also, anger and frustration.
Genetics - Surprisingly, bruxism can occur in families. If you have it,
other family members may also have it or have had it in the
    past.
Other Causes - It can even be linked with several medical and
mental health conditions like dementia, gastro esophageal
reflux disorder (GERD), epilepsy, night terrors, Parkinson's
    disease and ADHD.
HOW TO PREVENT DAMAGE FROM GRINDING TEETH?
    1. Get a mouth guard/night guard, this minimized the damaging
    forces from grinding.
    2. Occlusal Adjustment. This is reshaping the teeth which also
    minimized the damage from bruxism
    3. Eliminate grinding triggers. This option is best exercised through
stress therapy and changing habits that might contribute to
    Bruxism.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE GUM RECESSION?
The Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation Technique is an excellent option for treating gum recession. It is generally pain-free and lasts a lifetime.

Ok so I have extreme anxiety. At work I get so stressed I clench the whole time. I just got back from work today and my jaw and teeth hurt so bad and it feels like I'm not getting any circulation at all and feels like my teeth are going to fall out. I read the ebook and did the technique where you breath out longer then breathing in, and in a few minutes my gums and jaw started tingling and getting blood flow back. I'll be doing this 3x a day. Thank you very much.

The only long term solution is that sufferers of bruxism learn to keep the tongue on the roof of the mouth, pressing upwards against the palate, with the teeth only slightly touching. This has to be the permanent default position the tongue should be in. Thus forcing the maxilla upwards and in place and reducing the need for clenching the jaws. It's the only thing that helped me long term. Correct tongue posture will also help keep the face from lengthening, which is a common result of orthodontics.

What about preventing clenching at night while asleep?

    • @stefaniedonauartisanobject5207
      @stefaniedonauartisanobject5207 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@stop08it , if you haven't had your tongue pressing up on your palate naturally, you need to train it. It took me a long time to get it right at night, but I made it a priority to the point of naturally waking up when it wasn't in position. Practicing it during the day also helps tremendously to make it a new habit in stead of clenching. Once in a while, when I'm overtired or too stressed, it goes back to clenching at night, but it's 90% resolved nonetheless. If you want to know more about tongue posture, look up Mike Mew on utoob. Feel free to ask me more about it if needs be.

Of course, eventually, if the problem gets too bad, grinders will end up using a mouthguard at night, the only treatment so far that definitely works. “At least it protects the teeth against tooth wear,” Lobbezoo says. “But it only reduces muscle activity during the first few weeks.” - what does this mean, reduces activity only in the first weeks?

Mouth guards are temporary fix only. Get to the root cause. Some say getting the tongue in the place will help. But I need to test this. I am getting CT scans and MRI to diagnose mine with DTR / T scans and TENS to relax my muscles. Then I am going to find the most relaxed natural position for my jaw and teeth. This is extremely expensive but it is needed.
All this started after I got my two lower wisdom teeth very badly impacted.

Hi, I suffered from bruxism for a few years and after a very stressful period, recently it was almost gone and under control.
Unfortunately, about 7 months ago, while performing a cleaning, my dentist's assistant, after I told her that I had some pain in an upper molar while eating, most likely caused by receding gums, decided to file down one of my teeth and that procedure caused me an occlusal problem since then, which resulted in severe bruxism and a lot of damage including a chipped tooth that had to be bonded.
I've seen another dentist that made me a different mouthguard but it doesn't seem to work. In the meantime, my gingival papillae retired visibly on several teeth, forming black triangles in a few months.
What can I do to fix the situation, keeping in check the grinding again and, later on, repair the estetic damage, covering the interdental space?

    Same thing as Invisalign aligners?

    • @josephrnemeth
      @josephrnemeth  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

No, they may look similar, but they serve two different purposes. A bite plate is meant to prevent your teeth from rubbing together if you grind them. It keeps your teeth from chipping, breaking and may limit jaw soreness. Invisalign is made specifically to slowly move your teeth into the desired position. They may look similar, but don't expect a bite plate to make your teeth straighter, and vice versa.

@@josephrnemeth I am also curious about this. Will an invisalign help with the grinding while going through the treatment? My dentist has said I need a root canal and a filling on two teeth due to grinding wearing down my enamel really badly. He suggested using invisalign to bring my overbite into line so the canines take more of the chewing forces. But that doesn't sound like it'll help much if I'm also grinding overnight. What can I do about that? Anything other than a nightguard?
I asked the dentist about applying tooth sealants but he seemed to think they'd be worn away in a matter of months rather than the usual lifespan of them.

Will this cause decay in the other teeth due to such dryness and would having a Humidifier next the bed help with dry mouth?

Hello Amy. Gum Recession usually takes many many years to develop. It is a progressive disease. I have seen recession in young adults as old as 20 years old, I have also seen it manifest in older adults after years and years of Bruxism. It really depends on your gum tissue and the degree of your Bruxism. The progression of gum recession can be slowed with proper oral hygiene and good habits. Do you use a bite plate when you sleep?

I'm really late but i've read that you can't wear guards like these with braces unfortunately. However, they do make these anti grinders under the "Plackers" brand. They're really cheap and they fit on your back teeth enough to prevent clenching. Once your braces are off you'll be able to get fitted for trays like the ones in the video.
