I've had this Heavy Menace distortion for 3 days and it's impressive, the sound reproduces every note perfectly, cleanly, even with a lot of gain. Thanks to the "weight" button, the palm-mutes come out huge, heavy. The highs come out without being aggressive or tiring. The gate is also super well calibrated! I had many hi-gain distortion pedals (Blackstar Dist-X, Boss Metalzone, EV Metalmuff, Guyatone MetalMonster...) and the Empress HM is far above. It transforms any tube amp clean channel into a Hi-gain channel.
Okay, after only two days with this pedal, I'm 100% on board, experiencing giddy delight and total joy from the sonic delivery of this pedal. Yes, I have a few other "metal pedals" that I still love and adore however, the Heavy Menace now sits at the top. Other metal pedals are great, of course, but none deliver the mind bending metal experience better than the New King of Metal Pedals. Thank you Empress, Sweetwater, and of course Nick for a phenomenal review!!!
nice playing sir! thanks for micing this pedal correctly. The other reviews make it sound fizzy and lightweight, much more akin to ordinary gain pedals which this obviously is not. rawk on !
I have the 5150 80w iconic head into the 5150 iconic 4x12 cabinet. Should this pedal go through the front of this head or the effects loop? Thank you!!!
Thanks for your message, interesting question. I suggest trying both placements to see what you like best. In front of the amp you can use it almost like an additional channel, overdriving or enhancing the clean and crunch channels. In the loop, you have control of your output volume since the pedal is after your preamp. Either attenuating or boosting your channels depending on how you set the gain and volume. It could also act as a lead tone, depending on not only the gain settings but the tone as well. Lots of possibilities. Please contact us direct with other questions as you have them!
