- An ordinary metal hardware store washer becomes a funky piece of jewelry with nothing more than decorative paper and Mod Podge Dimensional Magic.

Supplies:
Large washer
Origami or other decorative paper
Scissors
Quick Hold craft glue
Dimensional Magic
Pencil
1 yard - Leather cording
Leather clasp
Flat nosed pliers
Large hole punch
Steps:
Begin by making a copy of you decorative paper using a laser printer. Only a laser printed image will work with this project, as it will prevent the colors from bleeding when the diamond glaze is applied.
Trace the washer on the laser printed paper. Cut out the center with a craft knife, then cut out the rest.
Place the washer smooth side down and glue the paper to the rough side using Quick Hold Craft Glue.
Apply the Dimensional Magic Mod Podge to the top of the washer and use a wood skewer to spread it out and make sure it covers the entire surface. Allow to dry for 24 hours.
Cut your lacing to the desired length then fold it in half and feed the folded end through the center of the washer, loop the loose ends through the folded end.
Take a bead and feed both ends of the cording through it, and slid eit all the ay down the washer.
Trim the ends of the lacing to fit your neck. Attach a jewelry clasp to the ends using flat nosed pliers.
I'll make one for me-black
and my wife-white. lol.
love this idea
actually, washers WILL cause irritation on the skin in anyone with a nickel allergy. The metals used have variable amounts of nickel and a LOT of people (more women than men) are allergic to it. Ever get a rash from non-gold/silver jewelry? I react to even the earrings marked as surgical steel... because steel has nickel. Why they don't do both sides and add something to coat it is beyond me. It is actually a LOT nicer to do what is called the reverse water bottle technique for earrings... look it up, then do the same thing for this. Cut a approp circle from a sheet of clear plastic, use fabric fusion to glue fabric first to the plastic and then to this washer. Do the same with the other side. Easier and lasts longer. And no rash
@Treasures4Food Scrapbooking stores usually have Diamond Glaze. Michaels carries Dimensional Magic by Plaid - it works great too!
@Treasures4Food I get it at local scrapbooking stores. Also - Dimensional Magic by Plaid is available at Michaels.
How can he cut the middle so perfectly?? I've been cutting a little slit in the side and using scissors . I've been making little ones and using a hole punch...
What kind of paper did you laser print it on to? is it regular paper or cardstock?
@longevity4skin I got some hemp type cord and it irritated my neck like crazy. Finally found a nice cording in the ribbon secton at walmart. I was going for plain ribbon, the kind about 1/4 inch wide, but found the cord instead. I still got the thin ribbon, plus a sueded ribbon just to try out. The cord I got is rounded and works great!
This is awesome
If you don't want to use Diamond Glaze, you can also use a 2-part epoxy such as Envirotex Lite. You can get it at Michael's, Hobby Lobby, etc. (Make sure to use a printable online coupon!!).
Love it
@selenaluverMMT I went to a hardware store... and they come in all sizes from quarter size to big ones like in this vid.
Where do you get washers big enough that don't cost an arm & a leg? I can't find them big enough without ridiculously high prices.
hi Cathie & Steve , I really like your show. I'm fond of art and watching you both for making jewelries is very interesting. Can I make it as reference for making my own project to start a business one day?
@WaNNaBeT2008 diamond glaze gives a better sturdy effect almost like resin... modge podge is super thin and isn't as nice to work with.
Holaaaa, no sé sí veréis este comentario. Deciros que me gusta todo lo que hacéis, quería que me dijeras qué medidas tienen las arandelas. Gracias.
WHAT "ALL PURPOSE" ADHESIVE WAS USED TO ATTACH THE PAPER TO THE WASHER? THANK-YOU!!!
how do you get the "laser print" from the piece of scrapbook paper?
What do call the first thing she clipped onto the end of the cord please?
@memphisjayhawk You can get them at any hardware store and they cost less than $1.00 per washer.
why do you need to laser copy the scrap book paper? why not just use the scrapbook paper?
Kirsten Houseknecht I think because of concerns of color bleeding with the Diamond Glaze?
Wow that's pretty cool.It looks like a big washer what size is it.Thanks (0:
Why can I not find Diamond Glaze in the stores? I live in a large metro. I guess you have to order it online.
