  • This talk explains how stereotypes affect adolescents and how to break the cycle. I am a 13 year old student at Ravenswood, I enjoy art, music, and travel. I hope to be a doctor when I grow up. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Brazil has the same kind of issue, people seem to think Brazil is all about Samba, soccer(Neymar), forest... however we have plenty of things of our culture which defines Brazil a lot more, of course the culture of soccer is really huge here but it doesn't mean it's all about it. I suppose every country has the same issue when it comes to people's opinion from other countries.

Stereotypes are usually based on something. I went to France and I saw people like I was told. Of course stereotypes are generalization which means there are exceptions from it. For example my nation is known for drinking a lot of alcohol. I don't drink at all but I agree with that stereotype of Poles.

The problem with stereotypes are that it's an oversimplified statement. So much so, that the opposite of the stereotype is seen as the "exception" when it's really the norm. Stereotypes have power, even though they're built on lies or overgeneralization. The only way to counter it is to let go of our own negativity bias. Then we'll see the reality and ignore those stereotypes.
