When I was a kid, I got the comic where he teams up with Spider-Man. Spidey was my favorite superhero at the time, so that (and his grumpy nature) made Gears one of my favorite Transformers.
I read that comic too and was impressed at how badass Gears was along with how brave he was despite being grumpy. He even called Spiderman a friend as he fell hard to the ground.
Gears and Huffer were the first Transformers I ever got back at Christmas '84. They were waiting in Santa's stocking at the end of the bed for me to wake up to. So, I've always had a soft spot for the pair of curmudgeons.
easily one of my favourite characters. just the idea that without a chip containing half his personality, becomes a completely agreeable to a fault robot is hilarious
It's hilarious and was a really fun episode. My wife had been asking me to cover how they got to Africa in less than two hours from that episode too so I got two birds with one stone. Merry Christmas Lazy Eyebrow!
Gears has been recently revealed for Legacy United! He has the chest flip open to reveal the special circuit chip from the Changing Gears episode 6:43. And comes with a gun that looks like this 13:32.
I think Gears has an unique design, as well an unique color pattern, with that I mean is that how he is almost completely red in his robot mode but mostly blue in his pick-up mode.
Gears was featured in battle artwork for Kingdom! However some inside sources say that Gears and another character featured in the art, Polarclaw, never made it past concept stage. Hopefully they're wrong, I for one would love a new Gears!
As I've gotten older I've begun to understand Gears' grumpy demeanor, in fact I can relate to it. Now I'm the one that yells at all the other Autobots to get off my lawn!
Gears is so fun in G1 and his episode in Season 2 is amazing to watch. Definitely an underrated one and thankfully we got a toy of him from Legacy which is one of his best toys no question! A grump, but a fun character nonetheless.
Yeah I'm sad the rumor is they canceled gears and polar claw. Gears would have been a great new toy plus they could have easily gotten swerve as a easy repaint and new head mold. But here's hoping they go back and do a fan vote or something for him in the future so we can get a new toy of him.

Great retrospective. I love gears. I had him as a kid, but lost him somehow. “Changing Gears” was one of my favorite spotlight episode. When I first saw it i laughed my ass off. It was hilarious to me to see his personality reversed. Especially with Megatron politely asking him to aid in his evil plans and Gears pleasantly obliging.
After watching this video, I now have a liking for Gears. He’s a pretty badass and fun character, and I always have a liking for obscure and underused characters. And I do hope Gears gets a new figure in the Kingdom line. Also, could you do a video on Brawn? I think he deserves a little recognition, and a new toy. 🙂

Finally found the elusive Legacy Gears at a local Walmart (finally). Any time I pick up a new figure I check Rodimus Primal’s channel to see if there is a retrospective for them. Thanks for all the great content!!!
At first, I didn't know who Gears was. But after hearing more about him; his Mysterians beginnings, a grumpy personality, air compress feet, him teaming up with Spider-Man in the Marvel comics, and his G1 cartoon portrayal.... He really is a unappreciated character. So I really hope that Hasbro doesn't back down and gives us Gears in Kingdom. So he won't be a background character in that Kingdom poster, like in later issues of the Dreamwave comics. Probably be a deluxe class figure with Warpath and Huffer. Hopefully Swerve could follow as a Generations Selects figure. -Also it's interesting how his spotlight episode, with that Solar Needle draining power of the sun, is similar to the ROTF Star Harvester machine. Pretty cool.
Kingdom is ending. And Gears really didn't make the final cut. Hopefully in Legacy he will get a second chance. -Edit: Gears has been revealed for Legacy United.
My favorite Autobot of all time. I relate to him on a personal level because I can be a grouch at times and He will be my first G1 Toy (Obviously the reissue) and he's an underused character and i hope he gets a Toy in Legacy evolution since he was planned to be in Kingdom
Thanks, I actuallt didn't know much of Gears character, I know him from generations legends 2 pack. Now I know there is a lot of Transformers character that has different personalities and in this case grumpy Gears.
Gears was one of the first few Transformers I got back in the 80's. I always liked his color scheme. I was really hoping they were going to make his Earthrise figure since he was on the artwork. Here's to hoping Hasbro still does. I also like to think he survived Moonbase 1.
One more thing to note is that Gears' g1 toy was recoloured as the Gobot, Smallfoot for Takara's G1 Gobots. Not Cybertronians named after Gobots, but the actual Gobots themselves who took the forms of Transformers who had similar alt modes. Just wanted to mention that
The dialogue between Gears and Bluestreak in that Dreamwave mini was well-written and once again shows us how lamented DW's TF is. It also showed us lost opportunities on how those Bots could have been turned into a bickering duo a la Laurel and Hardy: one flighty and always joking, the other serious and always complaining. As Bluestreak HIMSELF wrote Gears' MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE bio, I consider them to be best friends. Also, the "Changing Gears" episode was so unexpected at the time! A 22-minute spotlight on sour ball-bot?? I wish Prowl, Jazz, and some of the other original TFs had gotten focused episodes before the cast had gotten too crowded. But hey, good for Gears! He may be forgotten now, but he can't complain about his star turn on the show! Oh, wait, yes, he can. 😉
You know what really grinds my gear not seeing characters like gears, hoist, grapple, powerglide and many others get the spotlight. I know there are popular characters but supporting TF characters matter even the littlest and minor one should get some treatment.

I am going to complain like Gears, that we need Gears! Come on Hasbro! If it was a budget thing, no one asked for those fossilizers. We want to complete our 1984 bots with the better, newer versions. Great video on an under used character from G1 in my opinion. The few times we do see him actually fighting he did kick some butt....probably why he was on the team in the 1st place!! Too bad if its true his toy was cancelled for KINGDOM but I am hoping for a recolor/retool and we get Gears in the new show/toy line!!

Gears deserves another chance in the spotlight he just grumpy to the Decepticon to never leave him and Autobots. We all know he always have a fight with his team about things but when he see his friends are in danger he will come back and safe the day. Not going to lie the another Autobot are afraid of Gears's nice side even Ironhide also got a Spark attack seeing him nice all the time in the Ark. Gears was my only Minicar in the '80s, so I cherished him and analyzed him from every angle. His color scheme is pure nostalgia for me. Badcube's MP Gears is awesome, too. That "M" thing ties in with Huffer and Windcharger too.
Good to see Gears getting some appreciation. As I've gotten older I've found that I appreciate the nature of Gears, as it counterbalances some of the over optimistic tone of the other Autobots.

Imagine if there was a g1 style Transformers cartoon adaptation of 'A Christmas Carol' (perhaps as a one-off special), incidentally will yo do a Retrospective on the Death's Head
character and/or the Decepticon Octus, maybe also featuring notes on the Transformers ties to Doctor Who in the comics and a certain scene in the G1 cartoon in regards to a sound effect ..?

As a Swerve fan I would personally like to thank Gears for being the inspiration of the 4th wall breaker of Transformers
I think Gears deserves another chance since he was rereleased with Eclipse in 2014.

Gears deserves another chance in the spotlight he just grumpy to the Decepticon to never leave him and Autobots. We all know he always have a fight with his team about things but when he see his friends are in danger he will come back and safe the day. Not going to lie the another Autobot are afraid of Gears's nice side even Ironhide also got a Spark attack seeing him nice all the time in the Ark. Gears was my only Minicar in the '80s, so I cherished him and analyzed him from every angle. His color scheme is pure nostalgia for me. Badcube's MP Gears is awesome, too.
That "M" thing ties in with Huffer and Windcharger too.

Good to see Gears getting some appreciation. As I've gotten older I've found that I appreciate the nature of Gears, as it counterbalances some of the over optimistic tone of the other Autobots.
