In these troubling times, even for someone who doesn't do craft yet or gothic (leaning more towards fantasy and magepunk myself... still figuring out how exactly) these guides and tutorials are a godssend. It's got the relaxing and wholesome elements of a Bob Ross video mixed with the fun and weirdness you'd find on the Addams Family.

@@sabrinamarquez1870 I'm not even sure I'm using the term right, actually. Basically the magic-inspired elements of a fantasy setting without it looking old and tribal.
@Jacqui G I've mostly been contemplating what sort of paintings or posters I might include, maybe a dragon statue here or there or ornamental dagger. But yeah, patterns on the walls? Something vaguely glyph-like, perhaps? Definitely nothing with runes, though; too blocky for me. I've heard jokingly that art nouveau is elvish and art deco is dwarvish, maybe that's something I can look into.
But that's all for after the lockdown, moving out, seeing what I have to work with.

I'm an X-Ray tech, so I can speak to the validity of making sure that no patient information (like, their name) appears on the x-rays that you would want to use. They fall under the flag of HIPAA laws.
But the real problem, in recent years, is this: where can you find old-school x-rays ON FILM, such as was used for this project?
Almost every hospital and clinic where I live takes digital x-rays that are uploaded to computers (called PACS systems).
Old-school FILM x-rays have gone the way of the 8-track, so they're gonna be hard to find. Kinda like trying to find 35 mm film for a Kodak camera these days.
With all that said, this is an absolutely killer project !! Well done !

Apothecary history and in particular that of natural ethical medicine is quite fascinating, given how John D. Rockefeller (1839 - 1937) who was an oil magnate, a robber baron, America’s first billionaire, and a natural-born monopolist helped to censor natural medicine and corner the market to promote the pharmaceutical industry. Basically, by the turn on the 20th century, Rockefeller controlled 90% of all petroleum refineries in the America through ownership of the Standard Oil Corporation (which was later split into Mobil, Chevron, Exxon, etc.) Concurrently, around 1900, the science world was getting excited about new “petrochemicals” and the ability to create a variety of new of compounds from basically ground oil. During this same era (early 1900’s) scientists were doing groundbreaking work to understand the basic mechanics of life and human health. It was during this time that most of the essential vitamins were discovered, including B1, B2, Biotin, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, etc. However, other scientists which sadly soon outnumbered the organic trained scientists cornered that market and were involved in research to recreate artificial versions of these vitamins in a laboratory using said chemicals. Rockefeller saw the chance to control and monopolize multiple industries at once: petroleum, chemical and medical to promote chemical, artificial, and unethical ingredients to be used to create "medicine". For anyone who doubts this, this has been verified by historical evidence and covered in the history book "Rockefeller Medicine Men: Medicine and Capitalism in America" by E. Richard Brown. Sadly, because of Rockefeller's intentional natural medicine censorship and basically smearing the thousands of years worth of information on and the effectiveness of natural ethical medicine - most people are not aware of this. Fortunately, doctors, organic scientists, nurses, etc are coming forward to bring us out of the pharmaceutical drug age and there are some great books on natural apothecary and natural medicine - some of which are "The Herbal Apothecary: 100 Medicinal Herbs and How to Use Them" by JJ Pursell and "Alchemy of Herbs: Transform Everyday Ingredients into Foods and Remedies That Heal" by Rosalee De La Foret. It is especially interesting and humbling when you take into the fact that there were plenty of knowledgeable people into natural medicine who were accused falsely and condemned and murdered for being "cunning folk" or "witches" or "warlocks". Since studying natural medicine in my spare time myself, whenever I get insulted with being called "a witch" - I think back to the natural medicine forebears and shrug it off and smile. RIP to the natural medical doctors! Sorry for being verbose and long-winded, but I was inspired to see Voltaire talk about a subject that is definitely still worth discussing and learning about - apothecaries and natural medicine. :) I hope other goths will come forward to discuss it also - and don't be ashamed of being a "cunning" folk. :)

Hear, hear! Most people nowadays don't stop to think that our ancestors survived long enough on that natural medicine in far better health on average than we are now, and here we are now medicating ourselves into health conditions that were far less common then. Makes you wonder if a longer lifespan is the trade-off or a natural part of our evolution that would have occurred regardless.

@@terismith2461 I'm glad that I didn't sound too long-winded (though many have oft accused me of such). Sadly, natural medicine has an unfortunate and still often censored reputation by the majority of chemical/pharma based scientists and allopathic promoters. It is especially ironic because, as Mary Fowlie rightly said, many modern pharma "medicines" often cause just as much harm, if not more - so why are natural medicines accused of being 'quackery', especially when its acknowledged that they are not often properly tested due to competition. Also, the usage of toxic artificial ingredients to be used as "medicine" is also not a new phenomenon either. Even in the pre-Industrial ages, people would be split between using natural herbal/fruit/vegetable/fresh milk/honey remedies and the other half would use toxic ingredients which, bizarrely, we haven't learned to stop using toxic and artificial ingredients like quinine, lead, arsenic, mercury, aluminum, etc - even formaldehyde are used in some medicines. At one point within the 1900s, scientists encouraged the usage of radium (yes, you read that right) as both a medicine, makeup, and in food, etc! Most people don't know that either.

@@EmilyGloeggler7984 I am so impressed with your knowledge and desire to learn! Your posts are like little documentary articles❣️ I would be one to encourage you to study herbology and homeopathy in ernest! I think you would be a wonderful practitioner.
I suppose we will have to wait a bit longer for the blend of natural medicine and modern medicine. I just don't see it happening while big pharma is still making money hand over fist. Baby steps I suppose.
Blessings for your bright future my dear.

I'm so glad you mentioned the issues around using imaging films! I have my own MRI films, which I feel lucky to have. They gave them to me 18 years ago, no questions asked. Now, they only give you a CD. I made mine into a lantern and still have lots of my films left. Anyway yes, when using someone else's films, remember, that's some real person's health data.

I think it can be even better if you replace the door glass with a fake mirror (like those in interrogation rooms). light would still pass through it to reveal the radiograph, but it would also be useful as a mirror.

A good alternative to using X-rays- you can always use print-on acetate and print scans of X-rays onto it!
Many hospitals don’t use physical copies anymore and do them all digitally, so it can be hard to find them now unfortunately

I would add a battery operated light or even a hard wire one to the inside of the cabinet and then you could see the x-rays when the cabinet is closed.

✨This one actually made me want to make this in purple. And I love the silver spiderwebs and skulls.
I don't want to use X-rays as they look cool on yours, but for me I'd use some delicate or dreamy patterns maybe of swirling stars or maybe something else natural + magical.
I looove your wallpaper though and the tab to change the background motif is so ingenious yet simple.
Great design, creativity and message about 'failure' being transformed into chance creation. Nature does that too.
You really make DIY seem so much more accessible and doable. It's intersting to both watch you and also think about how these concepts could be applied to making one's home more homey.
