The two might sound similar to you because Stone wrote most of the guitar driven sound for Mother Love Bone and the first couple Pearl Jam records before Eddie took the lead.

Creed ,Three Days grace, matchbox 20, etc..
In highschool in 1994, every dude had long hair on the top, shaved sides, flannel on, baggy Levi's ripped at the bottom, chain wallets, hackey sack in your front pocket, if you smoked it was Marlboro reds or Camel lights, .. the world was simple. It was most definitely more wholesome.

I can't tell you how many times I drove around my small hometown at 10-11 at night, listening to this song with friends or alone... just feeling the emotion and feeling alive.

I thought that at first too. I was 16 when Ten came out, had recently found an AM alternative station on the radio and just wasn't crazy about Nirvana. 16yo me I guess thought there could only be one. Pearl Jam is still my favorite, but I did come around to all the other bands too.

Absolutely. In my opinion Nirvana is not deserving of the best grunge band label. I think they get it because of Cobain’s death. Pearl Jam was head and shoulders above them.
I was 100% in the Nirvana camp as a teen. After catching up on a ton of classic rock from before my time, like Neil Young and The Who, I came back to Pearl Jam and their music really clicked for me.
The MTV Unplugged sessions were amazing. The artists were vulnerable, showed raw emotion, and extreme talent. Pearl Jam to this day gives me goosebumps and make me cry - they are so talented and Eddie's voice and lyrics just really touch your soul. Check out the Nirvana unplugged too, if you haven't already.
Unfortunately too many artists just used it as a way of getting their old albums back in circulation, but there were enough that actually tried to make it something new. Something to reconnect with their past selves and their fans. Pearl Jam and Nirvana are excellent examples of this.
Eddie Vedder has just an enveloping voice. Not sure that makes any sense but it's like his voice just wraps around you and fills the space in any area. It's like comforting and sinister all at the same time. At least that's how it's always felt to me, I may be the only one. Absolutely beautiful song and performance. Like you said, can't teach that. Total natural talent.
Every song from this MTV unplugged set list is amazing!! Pearl jam, alice in chains, nirvana, and stone temple pilots all did MTV unplugged and those are some of the best live performances I've ever seen.

No matter how much I listen to this song, it always cuts me a little deeper each time.
When you're going through this. This track is just that much more powerful. "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star.. In someone elses sky! .. But why? Why?! Why cant it be mine!?" Sidenote: Eddie cracks his voice during this song, live and on the studio version on purpose to show and help the listeners feel his desperation. This track has literally saved lives. Mine, as well. When I was going through a divorce, this song was all I had. I listened to this track for years before just because it's such a good song. But never truly understood it until that moment. It helped me in so many ways, It got me to let it all out and let it all go🙏 Oh and to anyone feeling/relating to this song right now, it does get easier. Just give it time✌
Tbh I wish MTV had held off another year so we could’ve gotten some of the tracks off Vs. too, but yeah this is one of my favorite Unplugged performances. I wish they would officially release it as a soundtrack like they did with Nirvana and AIC

Christopher, I agree with listening to the studio version first then the live one has a bigger impact ..... if you’re getting into a band that’s got a large catalogue then there is a chance you’ll hear stuff live before getting round to listening to the album version .. it happens sometimes
I’ve been listening to this song ever since the Ten album was released back in the 90’s. That performance still gives me chills and makes me cry at the end, even though I’ve seen it hundreds of times. You feel every word of his anguished cry of ‘we belong together’.

This whole concert has always been overshadowed by Nirvana’s as well as Alice in Chain’s...which are both great. But this one from start to finish is a complete ball of energy musically,l and physically. Just grabbed my copy on vinyl last Record Store Day.

One of the very few good things MTV produced - Unplugged. Nirvana, Alice in Chain, and Pearl Jam. I don't think the producers had any idea what kind of important magic they were making when they filmed those sets. The best Nirvana Album is the MTV unplugged set and it's not close.
First time I heard this song I wept. Even though at that point I didn't even have my first relationship, let alone first breakup. I must've listened to Black hundreds of times but it still gives goosebumps.

But I told her years later this song was basically my song to her and before I even said what the name or who it was she said the same one. She has a husband now and a family and seems happy. I used to call her my light to my darkness so that line specifically cuts into me deep. But what a beautiful song and what amazing passion that he sings with. Anyone catch how Eddie goofs his own lyrics here? In the studio version, and every version he would play in concert, he says, "she gave me all that she wore," and "my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds" during the first bridge and chorus respectively. In this Unplugged version, he uses the lines, "how quick the sun can drop away," and, "my bitter hands cradle broken glass", which are the lines from the second bridge and chorus. He repeats them here, mistakenly. Normally a band will alter lyrics during a live performance for two reasons: one is to make it TV-friendly, and the other is to compress for time. This wasn't the case, as the lines were neither inappropriate nor lengthier than the original. He just goofed and sang the wrong lyrics here, even shaking his head as if aware of the error. For that, I would have to knock points off of his otherwise incredible performance. Good thing my opinion doesn't count for much and the performance was 30 years ago. :D
There are still some bands and groups, I don't know about individual artist/performers, who put stuff like this out. But they're a drop in the ocean, sadly. The main reason I don't listen to the radio anymore, hardly know any new trends, learn months later that favorite bands have released new songs or albums. But, it keeps me from hearing heartless samey-same bullshit.
Eh, there's plenty of modern music with heart & feeling, it's just rarely on the radio. There were also plenty of bands back then that didn't have "heart & feeling".

Garden is another powerful song. Evolution is another favorite of mine. Throw in some daughter and animal n boom. Those are just a few of so many amazing songs. Their debut album 10 is legendary, every song on it is gold.

The MTV Unplugged sessions were amazing. The artists were vulnerable, showed raw emotion, and extreme talent. Pearl Jam to this day gives me goosebumps and make me cry - they are so talented and Eddie's voice and lyrics just really touch your soul.
Check out the Nirvana unplugged too, if you haven't already.
Unfortunately too many artists just used it as a way of getting their old albums back in circulation, but there were enough that actually tried to make it something new. Something to reconnect with their past selves and their fans.
Pearl Jam and Nirvana are excellent examples of this.
Alice in Chains was epic too
Eddie Vedder has just an enveloping voice. Not sure that makes any sense but it's like his voice just wraps around you and fills the space in any area. It's like comforting and sinister all at the same time. At least that's how it's always felt to me, I may be the only one. Absolutely beautiful song and performance. Like you said, can't teach that. Total natural talent.

Every song from this MTV unplugged set list is amazing!! Pearl jam, alice in chains, nirvana, and stone temple pilots all did MTV unplugged and those are some of the best live performances I've ever seen.

But why, why can't it be mine?" is in my opinion one of the greatest lyrics and it really hits home for people who've loved but wasn't really loved in return. No matter how much I listen to this song, it always cuts me a little deeper each time.

This track has literally saved lives. Mine, as well. When I was going through a divorce, this song was all I had. I listened to this track for years before just because it's such a good song. But never truly understood it until that moment. It helped me in so many ways, It got me to let it all out and let it all go🙏

Christopher, I agree with listening to the studio version first then the live one has a bigger impact ..... if you’re getting into a band that’s got a large catalogue then there is a chance you’ll hear stuff live before getting round to listening to the album version .. it happens sometimes

I’ve been listening to this song ever since the Ten album was released back in the 90’s. That performance still gives me chills and makes me cry at the end, even though I’ve seen it hundreds of times. You feel every word of his anguished cry of ‘we belong together’.

This whole concert has always been overshadowed by Nirvana’s as well as Alice in Chain’s...which are both great. But this one from start to finish is a complete ball of energy musically,l and physically. Just grabbed my copy on vinyl last Record Store Day.

My wife of 13 years and the mother of our 4 children and I split up about a year ago, and while we remain friends, I've been going through some severe depression because of it and the fact that I suffer from a pretty severe physical disability, so I can understand this song so much deeper now than I used to.

When I’m at my lowest emotionally, I play my ten album and sing along with E.V. And let all that emotion out. It started with the first time I heard this song back in ‘92 after my best friend and I got our first tattoos when we were 18. Her boyfriend’s roommate said hey you should listen to this song and he played it and it gave me one of my most important emotional crutches to get thru the hard times. Thank you for bringing back that memory. I had totally forgotten exactly why I loved Pear Jam so much.

I'm 51 years old and remember watching this Unplugged every chance I could. This is my all time favorite version of my all time favorite song so I've heard it hundreds of times and watched this video dozens. And still, to this day, it brings tears to my eyes. You can feel the pain in Eddie's voice. This song is intensely personal for him. It contains what is, in my opinion, one of the most powerful lyrics ever written "I know some day you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star in someone else's sky, but why can't it be mine?"

One of the very few good things MTV produced - Unplugged. Nirvana, Alice in Chain, and Pearl Jam. I don't think the producers had any idea what kind of important magic they were making when they filmed those sets. The best Nirvana Album is the MTV unplugged set and it's not close.

First time I heard this song I wept. Even though at that point I didn't even have my first relationship, let alone first breakup. I must've listened to Black hundreds of times but it still gives goosebumps.

Had my high school sweetheart who was the one where we just couldn't explain but we knew and loved each other deeply as if we have in past lives but the world gave reasons that it wasn't supposed to be in this one. But I told her years later this song was basically my song to her and before I even said what the name or who it was she said the same one. She has a husband now and a family and seems happy. I used to call her my light to my darkness so that line specifically cuts into me deep. But what a beautiful song and what amazing passion that he sings with. Makes you really appreciate what's real in life. I hope despite everything going on in the world that we never forgot what really matters. God bless and much love to everyone.

This has to be one of the greatest musical performances ever recorded. Eddie's raw passion and the tightness of the band combines and it's like magic.
Anyone catch how Eddie goofs his own lyrics here? In the studio version, and every version he would play in concert, he says, "she gave me all that she wore," and "my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds" during the first bridge and chorus respectively. In this Unplugged version, he uses the lines, "how quick the sun can drop away," and, "my bitter hands cradle broken glass", which are the lines from the second bridge and chorus. He repeats them here, mistakenly. Normally a band will alter lyrics during a live performance for two reasons: one is to make it TV-friendly, and the other is to compress for time. This wasn't the case, as the lines were neither inappropriate nor lengthier than the original. He just goofed and sang the wrong lyrics here, even shaking his head as if aware of the error. For that, I would have to knock points off of his otherwise incredible performance. Good thing my opinion doesn't count for much and the performance was 30 years ago. :D

There are still some bands and groups, I don't know about individual artist/performers, who put stuff like this out. But they're a drop in the ocean, sadly. The main reason I don't listen to the radio anymore, hardly know any new trends, learn months later that favorite bands have released new songs or albums. But, it keeps me from hearing heartless samey-same bullshit.

Eh, there's plenty of modern music with heart & feeling, it's just rarely on the radio. There were also plenty of bands back then that didn't have "heart & feeling".

Eddie Vedder is amazing. This song has been one of my favorite songs for a long time. Now that I am married it has take on a different meaning for me and I fight like hell every day to keep my marriage strong.
THAT was the BEST reaction I have seen to this performance and believe me, I have watched MANY to this particular song and performance! Pearl Jam is the best live band! And Eddie's voice is so emotive and not every singer has that, no matter how technically great their voice is. That's raw power. He would be touched to see your reaction.

I feel like I'm holding my breath because it's so intense, especially toward the end. Eddie just sings his heart out and I love his instant expression change after he drops that last scream. ( kind of like "well that song is done, what's next?). That's cool 😎 and confident. Great performance.

I am 40 next year and only heard this song becausr someone did a cover. Now I have seen this it all makes sense. The cover was amazing but holy hell this was something else. Its like he goes to another place. I can hear pain, sadness, anger, love and just broken in his voice.

First time I heard "Alive" in 1991 I was 20 and I had never heard of Pearl Jam before. I thought Vedder was in his 40s because of his whiskey-soaked, world-weary voice.

Pearl Jam: one of the best grunge bands ever. Live performances so great. This song is one of the many that is so deep with meaning and can touch anyone about everyday life, love, tragedy, happiness and on and on.
IMO this IS the best version of Black and the MOST emotional live version of ANY of their songs! This one is a cut ABOVE them all!
Garden is another powerful song. Evolution is another favorite of mine. Throw in some daughter and animal n boom. Those are just a few of so many amazing songs. Their debut album 10 is legendary, every song on it is gold.
