Eddie is an incredible vessel for emotion. He uses his entire body to project his thoughts and emotions. Watch again and watch his hands, eyes, and mouth. He is a very quiet and shy person, soft spoken but the moment he gets on stage he releases it all. Pinkpop 92' Porch is a great video to express this.

This song is, simply, about a girl that he loved when he was younger. I’ve heard this recording many times, and I’ve found it fascinating that he essentially cries for exactly one note at the climax. He must’ve really been feeling it this performance because he added a lot. The “we belong together” isn’t in the song, but it’s heavily implied in my opinion. This song is one of the saddest I’ve ever heard. The others would be Disturbed’s Cover of The Sound Of Silence, Wings For Marie/10,000 Days by Tool, and Daddy by Korn. I recommend all of these except Daddy, because the weight of that is mostly in the lyrics and not the performance. Great review!

So, Black is my favorite song of all time, and this is my favorite performance of it. The part where you paused and said that he was building up to something("how quick the sun can drop away"), was actually him messing up the lyrics. That line you'll hear again later in the song, where it's supposed to be. You can see the realization for a split second. I think the fact that he still sang the actual heck out of it, is a testament to his abilities. To this day, his live performances of black are full of that same emotion.
He's incredible. Thanks for this cool analysis!

I noticed that too the first time I saw it "I know she gave me all that she wore" was what he meant to sing - and you're so right! That little pursed lip and slight shake of the head was him being a bit pissed at himself for messing up - but like you say, he still committed to the mistake and delivered an otherwise flawless performance.

Am I the only person who's always wildly impressed by how long he could hold a note? These days he has to breathe in the middle of them. Smoking for 30+ years will do that to you.
This video gives me chills, gets me hot, and makes me cry, all at the same time, every time. Eddie is pure perfection here--his singing is so passionate yet he seems so vulnerable, and he is just simply beautiful. He's never sounded or looked better. And what is it about the way he moves his mouth starting at 8:06 that is so incredibly sexy? 😍😍😍

Not sure if others have already answered this. But when the band got together Eddie was still living in California and would send them lyrics he had written then Mike and Stone would do the musical composition. I'm sure Eddie would then give input.
As for vocal damage. I've seen Pearl Jam perform a dozen times over 3 decades, and off to see them again in November. His vocals have changed little other than he his performances aren't as raw as they were in the early days. Vocally Eddie is Eddie, and Mike, Stone, and the rest of the musicians that tour with them are incredible.
