Regarding vocal mics on a budget in the 1990s - the best option I found was the Lawson L47MP at the time. It was about $1500 back then, but sounded light years better than anything else in that price range. Lawson makes their own capsule in the US, which makes them one of the few - certainly back then they were about the only one. We are living in good times now - lots of high quality options for reasonable budgets.

Somehow after all the years I have not used a Lawson mic! I was close to picking one up multiple times but I went with a Korby KAT4 system when they came out and at the time, I remember Lawson had a modular mic system as well.
I'd still love to check one out eventually, I have heard nothing but great things about them!

Hey Josh-well I just experimented w the Stam 47 on my 61 Gibson country western. Every mic placement, strumming by the bridge, by the sound hole, picking, fingerpicking, & with some good eq & compression, this mic is incredible! For me, it’s a classic case of “know how to use your gear”. Love this mic. Used UAD 1084, then put Lindell API, or UAD 1084 w fatso jr on inserts. Lotsa low pass & high boost. Thought I’d share my joy, lol

Josh-Thsnks for doing this. I got a Stam SA-47 mk2 a couple months ago. This is a great video, man. So we’ll done, & not a wasted word. I just ordered a Stam SA-87i, hoping I can get great acoustic guitar rec w it, as well as have for different vocalists. Any thoughts would be much appreciated !

Thanks so much for your kind words Alan! I'm so glad you enjoyed this review.
I've been talking to Joshua about the Stam SA-87i and can't wait to check one out! I think it will make a fantastic acoustic guitar mic(just like a vintage U87i) and I bet it will be just the right fit for vocalists where the 47 isn't quite right. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it once you get it!

I will let you know how the SA-87i sounds. I thought the mk3 sounded great on TH-cam reviews. The best acoustic gtr sound I ever got was a Vintage Stereo U67…2nd best was a vintage U87. I’m a session guitarist in NYC, so I need to make great acoustic gtr recordings for clients here st the hacienda. Thanks again for your stellar reviews!

Thanks again Josh for doing a great demonstration! I want to get a U47 style mic as I perform in a Beatles tribute band and I impersonate John. Always found the Beatles vocals so rich and up front in their records, would you recommend this one for a guy like me who wants to record Beatles stuff?

    • @SeawellStudios

Stam SA-47 MKII with a Chandler RS124 for compression would be such a great Beatles vibe!

I'm keen to buy a Stam for my daughter's, mainly pop vocals and given their prices are very similar would love to see a bake off between the SA-47 Mk III and the SA-67 MkII... or if anyone has an opinion on which is the best vocal mic I'd really appreciate hearing your thoughts

Hi Josh, thankfully sounds a touch bright and not as refined as the Flea 47 we just bought! Otherwise would be gutted, I quite like their slighty more modern looking design however, especially the polar pattern selector.
Much as I love the Flea, I was irked by a few things - the mount isn’t as high quality as I would like, the authentic Neumann connector screw cap is quite horrible to connect and I don’t know why they couldn’t have included a camera case for storage, while the wooden box is very nice the packing box is almost slighty prosumer given the cost of that thing! It is though, stunning sonically. Anyway, nice demo well performed, about to head in the studio and start figuring out the GainLab and the 124.
Where do you think the sweetspot setting for male vox is? Superfuse or not? Cheers! Jon

@@joshuastam7704 Hi Joshua - very interesting, we went via Flea for ourselves - as I said I liked some of your design choices over the Flea, but otherwise we love it sonically. What we are in the market for is Pultec EQ - we are in the UK so it makes it harder to try your design i.e. impractical with shipping and taxes etc, but also, as with Audioscape, its hard to pull the trigger when its such a bun fight to secure a model. Have you any advice? Cheers! Jon

Gene is one of the last of a generation of guys…. (Stephen Paul etc…) i have genes 47 and i also have a 251 which he modeled after my buddies C12 #454(shot it and modified the dynamics curve) used on a ton of hit records, Madonna, Barbara Striesand….. Genes mics are incredible, he decided to not make a distribution deal with Guitar Center because he said the retail price would go to $10K and he was selling them I believe in the mid $2Ks…..
I own a pair of Stam- matched 47 MKII’s with an 800 on order….. Joshua- reminds me a lot of my old buddy Brent Avril, and Stephen Paul and yes Gene Lawson (he has lawn chairs in his manufacturing room along with a 4000 SSL and a fabricating machine…. (My LA studio was a block away from Stephen and Brent in the 90s off Ventura Blvd)…. Those guys would do things like sit and listen to wire…. (Set up Monster cable and listen to different lengths and thicknesses for distinctions🤦🏻‍♂)… Gene is so particular about his corn chips, he will go to a restaurant and get the salsa and break out his own bag of Chips!.
When i saw the picture of Josh sitting in the lab in Rome listening to transformers…. I thought ….. this is what great builders do- like Jay Graydon setting up 3 different Linn 9000’s with the same program just to see which one felt better…. Its a special kinda crazy to not say….. good enough!! Its also a ingredient of youthful exuberance!
They come along every now and then…. Chandler, BAE, SPA, Lawson…. If you can grab some of their gear when they hit their stride….. chances are you are holding onto something beautiful…… when you get that intersection of technology and passion…. Its a beautiful thing

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts! I owned a Stephen Paul modified U87i for a while and it was such a thing of beauty! He is sorely missed!
That picture you mentioned of Josh listening to transformers had a huge impact on me as well! I liked Stam gear already but once I saw him taking that approach, I knew the sky was the limit. I can't wait to see what the next 5 years or so looks like for Josh and the team!
Thanks again for such a great comment on the video!

    • @SeawellStudios
      @SeawellStudios  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I would say yes, now it is on par with the Flea in my book! The Flea is a little more mellow on the top and the Stam is more extended in the bottom. They both have that magic built in compression that I love in a 47 style mic.

@@SeawellStudios My mic came today! I've never used a U47, so I was glad to be able to try it out. This mic is smooth! It's not grainy like some tube mics can be. I I have a modest home studio, and between this, my SA87, MXL Revelations, and Chandler TG mic, I think I'm good on mics for awhile. The SA47 has a natural elegance to it in terms of how it affects the source. I get what you said about the power supply being heavy. I was surprised at how heavy the cabling is, as well! It's always nice when you can see that corners were not being cut to increase profit margins. Everything looks to be top quality!

I don't fault him for that, if someone else like Tim Campbell for example makes the greatest version of a particular capsule, why wouldn't you just go with that? Building your own doesn't equate to it being better.
