    I fell back to this video twice. The first time would have been all it took, your instructions and demonstrations were spot on. The glitch came with the small copper ribbon that clips down onto the ... motherboard? The two batteries we've bought, and returned and are about to return had the ribbon in the same place, but the clips faced UP and just to the side of the clip in the board. I know your lessons would have worked since I was able to reinstall my existing battery (which dies randomly as power gets to >75%. It works well when it's on. Not great, but well. My Motorola lasted four years, but still ... it was once a premium brand. You sir, are a premium resource. Thank you for your help. /respects

    Finally I got around to replace the battery on my Droid Turbo 2. I recalled seeing this particular video before and after watching it again, the replacement was easy. I'd say this is the best video on this subject. By the way, a repair shop, which is part of the chain, wanted $130 (!) to replace this battery...

    Thanks for the video.. I just replaced my 3 year old battery tonight. Even after you said "some people strip the screws.." I STRIPPED A SCREW HEAD!! Eventually I drilled the head off and pulled the body off .. Not a big issue just be careful. Only bad part.. I got the old battery out dated 2015 and the new battery I put in is dated 2016!!!I did not think about checking the manufactured date but it came out of the sealed package charged at 78% and holding. Old battery would have gone down 10% just by turning it on and opening an app. Thanks again,

    • @madscientisthut
      @madscientisthut  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those tiny screws are easy to strip. I am glad you were able to get that done. The batteries mostly wear out from being cycled (discharged and charged, most of the damage occurs near the end of the charge when it is held at a higher voltage, when the battery is over heated or if it is severely discharged, severe discharge usually does not occur with built in protection).

    The ironic thing about this phone was that it was marketed to be durable (crack proof screen) and such. This phone gave me nothing but problems. First the charging port went and then the battery all within a year. I've long since gotten a new phone but decided to try replacing the battery in my Droid Turbo 2 to use to watch videos. I followed the steps and so far, fingers crossed, the phone is up and working. Thanks!

      The only thing bad with mine was the battery, I have had mine since 2016, still works pretty good. I have dropped it so many times and still no broken screen. I am happy you were able to use the video to replace your battery, maybe will come in handy as a backup phone if you ever break your new phone.

    Excellent, detailed video Sir! I watched one other from another user who did a bunch of extra unnecessary steps.... Glad I found your video here. Have had my Droid Turbo 2 for quite some time now but I ordered a kit for mine also and will be using your video to replace. Hope to get a few more years out of my Droid Turbo 2 also... Other than the battery, the phone works fine! It bugs me that companies try to force the latest phones on us every few years for a grand. Anyway... Thanks a lot for this video

    • @madscientisthut
      @madscientisthut  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I saw other videos that had unneeded steps that was why I did this video. I have been using my phone every day since replacing the battery and it has been running great. I absolutely agree with you and I do not like the corporations trying to force us to upgrade all of the time to their benefit.

    • @PastorKramer
      @PastorKramer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@madscientisthut I couldn't agree more with your comment on "corporations trying to force us to upgrade"! I realize many may laugh, but my wife and I are still using our Droid Turbo 2s; and just now needing to replace the battery in my wife's (and will do mine since I ordered 2 batteries -- figured I might as well do mine too, even though it still lasts me quite awhile and my "Ampere" app shows it's still doing quite well too.) I see NO reason to waste so much money on just a cell phone -- just ridiculous what they're getting for them these days! Mine works just fine for talking, texting, video chat, taking pics / vids, checking email, etc. I do NOT use it for games and have very, very few apps on it. NO matter what the device, the key is taking care of the battery from day one -- not letting it go too low AND NOT overcharging it!!! Thanks for letting folks know that they do NOT need to go through all the other steps -- all the way down to taking out the motherboard -- that's just crazy! NO need to do that.

    • @madscientisthut
      @madscientisthut  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can try filing a very small amount of the tip of the screwdriver off to give it a little more 'bite' then try pressing down with a fair amount of pressure when turning the screw.

    • @Utubeblessed247
      @Utubeblessed247 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually did that. Didn't work. Thinking I might need to cut through the screw or something.

    • @madscientisthut
      @madscientisthut  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a possibility, if you have access to a drill press you can get a drill bit that is a little bit larger than the screw shaft and very carefully with a very slight pressure drill into the head until it comes off. I would only try this on a drill press since it would be very easy to damage things without the stability of a press.

  • @DannyKellaher21

    Excellent tutorial sir! Made it easy for me.
    For anyone else about to do it, I recommend buying a decent precision screwdriver kit (Harbor Freight for $7) because the throwaways that they give you BOTH stripped out trying to get the perimeter screws out. They have thread lock on them and are fairly tight. As Mad Scientist said, good downward pressure to get these out.
    Also, I recommend taping the battery in place so it cannot move around in there.

    • @madscientisthut
      @madscientisthut  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ok did mine tonight.... the power and volume buttons are a PITA when re-assembling the thing! There does need to be a notch in the upper-right corner of the replacement FB-55 battery. I left the black glue on back of cover only peeling off any bunched up sections but whatever was still smooth I left alone and put the cover on using only that it seems as secure as ever IMHO. Lots of tiny screws, hobby glasses with bi-focal lenses much recommended! Finally I did not have any sound when I first test-powered it on with back cover still off and most of the edge screws not in... took it back down to battery pack, couldn't find anything amiss so put it back together again with a few more of the edge screws in place and test-powered it on and got sound and everything so something inside must need to make contact between the part with the wireless charger antenna and the circuit boards on the phone for sound and vibe to work! Scared the dickens out of me at first I thought I had made a mistake somewhere! Anyways.... regards and have a great Christmas!

    I really liked your video. I watched another video of some guy with the blue gloves take off everything and thought that was stupid. I have taken apart many old Motorola droid phones (I have a droid 4 ) and fixed them all. Those batterys off of Ebay don't seem to last very long but for like 15 bucks still worth it. I just bought a Turbo 2 and the battery drains fast. I ordered a new battery off of Ebay and going to change it out and use it as my daily driver.

    Great video on replacing the battery, and thanks for posting. A couple of questions and a suggestion: How is the battery life with the new battery? Also, why did you remove all the adhesive before reassembling? At the part where you forgot the bracket, and had to start over; some people might be following along in doing their replacement: it might be helpful to overlay a note at that part of video to let viewers know that you made a mistake at that part of the process, so they don't do the same thing. All things in balance, this is actually a pretty simple procedure: At least Motorola had the forsight, wisdom (and not to mention decency) to have the access point in the BACK of the phone. MOST devices these days can only be accessed by removing the screen - that is an altogether different animal (especially since everything has to be gutted along the way to get to the battery that way).
    Here it was just a matter of removing a thin plastic layer, unscrewing a barrel full of screws, removing another piece, and lifting about three connectors upwards (at least they wheren't the parallel kind with the latches) to get to the battery.. Basically, at least Motorola doesn't make it absolutely *impossible* here..

May I just suggest laying down a white towel or cloth as your work surface next time though.... it keeps tiny screws from rolling away, makes them stand-out (easier to see against a white backdrop) and protects the phone from scratches. I love this phone best I ever had but now mine is starting to shut-off after a mere 12 hours or so off charger (even just sitting unused overnight on night-stand by bed fully charged it dies 1st thing when I wake up and check it!).... so, even though only a few months past a year old, guessing I'm about to need to replace mine's battery too. I've started trying the replace the batt in my wife's Droid Turbo 2, and I've already run into differences from every other video including yours. To start with, even using a heat gun, the fake leather skin on the back of the phone, it ripped all to pieces instead of coming off. Maybe I had the heat gun on too low. While working I have upped the heat gun to 400 degrees, which helped, but I'm afraid of damaging the display of course. I note that you have a plastic skin on yours. After I got most of my leather skin off, I found a coating of semi-transparent plastic on the machinery. The machinery under the plastic looks like yours. I won't be able to remove any screws or other parts (much less the battery) until I get through the plastic. The plastic might be an extra-thick layer of glue that was holding the leather skin on. I'm afraid to apply high heat or solvents to it. I might try simply cutting away the plastic, but if it is struck to the parts underneath it, it will be hopeless. My wife says she's had this phone five years. Could it be a less-repairable, earlier model than yours? Do you have any ideas or suggestions? Or is it time to throw out this phone? Thanks.

    • @madscientisthut
      @madscientisthut  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wish I could see a picture of it, but it kinda sounds like the leather was attached to the plastic and it was the plastic piece that should have come off with the leather still attached to it.

    • @TheOldestSoul
      @TheOldestSoul 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My phone is like this one. The leather is glued to the plastic backing of the phone. I started to just pull up the leather at first, but I soon realized that it was just the skin of the plastic back. You need to start by getting something sharp and thin under that plastic backing and DO NOT just start pulling up the leather. The leather part is the prettiest feature of this phone, in my opinion and I didn't want to ruin it.

    I was just wondering why you don't at least put down a microfiber towel to cover up that rough wood your working on? Just the grit in the wood, not to mention what ever else may be on it couldn't be good for your phone.
    I make my work benches out of New kitchen counter material I buy at a over stock store for home improvements. At least it's smooth anyway.

    A couple of questions. My phone has been slow for months and the battery shows 27% when the phone shuts down. How is the Scotch tape holding up ?

    • @madscientisthut
      @madscientisthut  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would try a factory reset, you probably have an app that is running in the background. I have had to do that a few times for a slow phone. The battery is probably the issue with the 27% shut down, mine would randomly shut down even at 60% when the battery was done. I ended up getting a new phone, I loved the droid turbo 2, the screen was so tough, but the phone was old and slow. I got a Kyocera duraforce 2 it has been just as tough and as a bonus it is water proof

    That said, though: I too am a bit disapointed in Motorola here. I've had a Droid Turbo 2 since March of last year, specifically because I heard about how rugged, durable and dependable the phone was - I had a Moto E (2nd gen) and Moto G (3rd Gen): Both of them where tough and lasted me as long as I had used them: They felt like the ThinkPads of phones (it's no wonder Lenovo owns them now), and figured that the Droid Turbo 2 sounded something like the X1 Carbon of phones.. THAT SUMMER the usb cable died, and I had to charge it wirelessly, which was a pain in the side as clearly the battery wasn't having any of it and everytime I let the phone get down to zero it would sometimes take a whole day or two even (!) for the phone to START charging normally without spazzing out and discharging itself..
    My phone was later stolen and so I bought another Droid Turbo 2 for cheap - Now THIS DT2 will lie to me and pretend that it is charged up to say 45% or something, but then when I run a dozen or so apps on it it either reboots itself, OR it reveals itself as being down to zero.. And when charging it it charges too quickly (and it's not even showing "Turbo Power"), so clearly there's something screwy with the battery..
    The battery on these things seems to be a major weak spot, I don't get why motorola cheapens out on the battery so much when they made it this difficult (though, again, not *impossibly* so) to replace the battery, when this thing is specifically touted as practically indestructable..

    • @madscientisthut
      @madscientisthut  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yep, a quick cover with a latch on the back and a clip in replaceable battery would make this phone just about perfect. I have had mine almost 2.5 years now, I still love the fact when I drop it that there is no damage to it. I see folks getting the latest phones and breaking them in a few weeks with one drop.... I beat my phone up all of the time and it is still ticking

    Yeah, that "stripped screw" problem is caused by the cheap torx driver I got in my kit. Had to gently file down the tip to try to get the correct sizing for my screws. Only got 3 of the longer 4 silver ones and six of the shorter black screws to come out. Oh well, the phone was a paperweight & I'm only out about $13 total. . . Good video otherwise (DO NOT try to just pry the edges loose w/screws remaining! LOL!) ;)
