You are listening to one of the rock’s goddesses. Pat tends to hold back in some of her songs because her voice is very powerful. She also trained as a coloratura soprano when she was younger.
Not only have Pat Benatar and Neil "Spider" Giraldo been married since 1982 and performing together since 1979, they still tour to this day. I just saw them in concert two years ago. He still shreds and she can still belt out those vocals. "Hell is for Children" is probably her most hard rock vocals of anything in her catalog. One of my all-time favorite female rock vocalists. Mandolina, you might also want to listen to Beth Hart. She is mostly known as one of the greatest blues singers of all time, but she has some rockers as well. Try her version of "Black Coffee".
It's from a few years ago, but this Tiny Desk performance shows that years later they have been one of the most affectionately cute couples for many years. th-cam.com/video/yxteG1thK5I/w-d-xo.html
"Love is a Battlefield", "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", "Heartbreaker", "We Belong" - she has a BUNCH of great songs. One of the premier female voices in rock history.
Pat Benatar had one of the strongest voices. She was the opposite of most other female singers, who usually sang passive songs about being heartbroken. Benatar's songs said, "If you mess with me, I'll kick your ass!" Benatar and her band did change their music after their early rock stardom. They played more radio-friendly pop songs like "We Belong" and "Love Is A Battlefield". They were accused of "selling out": softening their music to get more airplay on mainstream radio stations. Here are some of her best songs: Heartbreaker You Better Run We Live For Love Hit Me With Your Best Shot Hell Is For Children Treat Me Right
Pat was a trained opera singer with a 4-5 octave range, but her true love was rock. When I first saw her in concert in the early 80's, everyone in the crowd was saying, "How can anyone sound this amazing live!" She could sing raspy and gritty one moment and then have these soaring high notes the next.
She is tiny, but her voice is gigantic. Top notch vocalist. Powerful performances, live is amazing, one of my all-time favorites. Seen her live, and you literally can feel her power hit you in the face. Love her!
She sings what the song calls for. She started out with opera training as a mezzo-saprano. Then she had specialized training as a coloratura soprano at Julliard in NYC. This is why she still has such power
Actually, Pat never attended Juilliard. Thought about it, but went to a state school of New York for only a year [to study health education], then she left school to marry Dennis Benatar, her high school boyfriend, in 1972.
First time I heard Benatar's music was a TV special back in Oct of 87 called 'DTV's Monster Hits'. The song was 'You Better Run', and it showed clips from the original Snow White to the music. The entire special had songs to animation, and might be worth checking out, at least for the tracklist.
Saw her first show in Houston Dec 79 at a little club in Windsor Plaza. No one showed up. After the show played pin ball with her and the bass player till about 3 in the morning. Great memories of those times.
She has a lot of great songs. Her husband, the guitarist, is very personable, attractive and a wonderful guitar player. Their fans love them and they still perform. 😊😊❤❤
Pat Benatar is a classically trained vocalist. She REALLY knows how to use her instrument! She's got great range, knows how to color and control it for different effects, can sing pure and can also growl, as you noted - she's one of the strongest of rock vocalists. She stands just 5'0" and she's very slight - you wouldn't think, looking at her, that she could possibly generate such vocal power.
Pat is in the R&R HoF, but she refused a number of earlier nominations because they did not include her husband, Neil, who writes the music for her lyrics. "We are a team," she told them. Truly an amazing lady. We saw them perform just last year and they still rock! Definitely one of the greatest of all time. She took time off from her amazing career to raise their kids until one day, her kids were at home watching music videos on TV. They called to her and said something to the effect of, "Hey, Mom. This woman looks just like you." She told them that she was indeed the woman they were watching. They laughed and said, "Oh mom. That's Pat Benatar." She has said that at that moment she realized that her kids, at least one of which performs with her now, had no idea who she is. She immediately went to the phone and called her husband who at the time was working as a highly sought studio musician, and told him, "We are going on tour." She has been back rockin' ever since.
80s rock/pop metal is definitely your thing. 🙂👍 And yeah, she is the real deal as a singer. Puts others to shame. “Love Is A Battlefield” is her biggest hit, along with “Hit Me With Your Best Shot”.
She's always been such a huge influence for me, on and off stage. Incredibly talented, vocally trained, powerful, grounded artist. I finally saw them (Pat and her husband Neil/Spider) Live years ago and just WOW. You could have heard a pin drop when she came out, JUST TO WARM UP. Unbelievable
Pat is one of my favorite artists ever. Opera trained 4 octave singer and she's barely 5 ft. tall. Just a powerhouse voice. Elected to the rock and roll hall of fame last year. So many huge hits in the 80s. Heartbreaker is a must reaction. Btw, that hot guitarist has been her husband since 1982.
Pat Benatar and her husband Neil established the band in the very late 70s ... ONE of the MANY GREAT BANDS coming from the USA during the very popular disco era. Pat was one of my rock "chick" crushes of that time as a pre-teen. Not because she was a great looking lady ... but her voice memorized me. Her range is phenomenal. In a era that showed us Styx, Heart, Van Halen among the standard issue great rock bands, she and her husband made a great team. They still do, as I know they are still together and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees. At that time in music (late 70s to middle 80s), there was emerging rap, established punk and disco. It was actually an awesome time for music. It ended up contributing to 80s metal. You can hear that in her earliest hits, like Heart Breaker.
Thìs "lady" is one of the greatest artists in rock-n-roll. Shes a classically trained singer that went full on rock. Pat all 4 foot something at 90 pounds and can belt out a song with the best of them & she was my 1st rock crush ❤ Her amazing voice and this new thing called MTV helped boost her career into superstar status
Pat Benatar is an awesome lady! She'd been nominated many times for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but turned them down because the nomination didn't include her husband, Neil Giraldo (the Guitarist). She only accepted after they acknowledged his contribution to their success and nominated him alongside her. They've been married forever!
Pat still Married to the lead Guitarist for over 40 years is Still touring with her Husband in smaller more intimate venues she has Quite the Hit list here are Just 5 for you 1) Hell is for Children 2) love is a Battlefield 3) We Belong 4) Heartbreaker 5) Hit me with you best shot Bonus : ( We live for Love ) I hope you Enjoy these suggestions As always the like button 🔳 has been Illuminated 😊 Note : opening up Pat Benitar is Like opening a Giant can of woop ass 😂
Pat Benetar, Meatloaf, and Geoff Tate are the only rock vocalists with opera training. That is why they have such ridiculous range and powerful vocals. Pat had some bangers! "It's a little to little ", "hell is for children ", "all fired up", "heartbreaker", and "we live for love" all worth checking out!
She was a trained operatic soprano, and was singing cabaret songs in nightclubs when she met Neil Gerardo, guitarist and songwriter. He knew what she was capable of and wrote a few killer songs like this for her. She was also very, very trendy for a while in the 70's and thousands of girls would copy her look, wearing their hair short with a headband and tights with leggings like she did on some of her videos. In the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High there's a whole series of visual jokes about girls doing the Pat Benatar look.
Pat is a powerhouse, been a fan since I first heard her back in 7th grade. She’s right there with Ann Wilson, Terri Nunn & Joan Jett. Keep bringing us more of Pat’s music! 😎🤘…she has a library full of hits! 🔥
Neil “Spyder” Geraldo also played the lead guitar in Rick Springfield’s “Jessie’s Girl” one of the most underrated guitarist ever nothing but tasty licks!
Pat Benatar is a legend. Particularly as she was doing rock and hard rock when it wasn't really the norm for a female vocalist the way it is now. It's really nice that young people are discovering and appreciating some of the classic performers from the 70s and 80s... and I definitely think Pat Benatar is overdue for the sort of re-recognition that some of the other greats have had recently. Too many great hits to list but definitely check out more. Shadows Of The Night, We Belong, Love Is A Battlefield, ALL FIRED UP is an especially good one. So many more though.
Usually the lead is "Love is a Battlefield" or "Hell is for Children". But I like this choice too. One of the pre-eminent feminist rock singers of the 80's. An amazing voice and ballsy attitude. Pat Benatar is one of the greatest vocalists. She can sing anything. Check out Hell is for Children, Love is a Battlefield, Invincible, All Fired up - she is incredible
Guitarist Neil Giraldo was a session artist when they met. His work can be heard on many artist's albums. Although "Love Is A Battlefield" is a great song, "Heartbreaker" is one of her first hit songs and truly established her as a genuine rocker. Its a definite must have recording. 👍😎❤️

Pat Benatar has a 4 octave voice making her one of the greatest singers of all time in Rock-n-Roll. So does Ann Wilson of Heart, btw. I saw her in concert in the 80s and it was awesome! Great choice, Bisscute and, great reaction! 😊😊👍👍

Her song " hell is for children " is powerful
The live version will break your heart.
@@Krieghandt I was about to suggest "Hell is for Children." I snoozed; I losed.
Definitely!
#SOFUCNTRUE
Yes it is. I was about to recommend it myself.
Pat Benatar, Joan Jet, Ann and Nancy Wilson were the queens of rock music in the 80's.
You left out Stevie Nicks
She's a Trained Opera singer !
Crazy that she sings Arias to warm up.
"Love is a Battlefield", "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", "Heartbreaker", "We Belong" - she has a BUNCH of great songs. One of the premier female voices in rock history.
The hits keep coming with Pat I was pissed when she married the guitar player I thought I had a shot LOL
@@MIKEYC123 Her, Joan Jett and Stevie Nicks.
@@bobbyc3895 I would add Ann Wilson, of Heart
One of the best lady rock singers in the world in my opinion. Pat equals Hit Maker!!!!!
Pat Benatar could lure you in close with a soft sweet voice, and then belt your head off. Always one of my very favorite singers!
Pat Benatar had one of the strongest voices. She was the opposite of most other female singers, who usually sang passive songs about being heartbroken. Benatar's songs said, "If you mess with me, I'll kick your ass!"

Here are some of her best songs:
Heartbreaker
You Better Run
We Live For Love
Hit Me With Your Best Shot
Hell Is For Children
Treat Me Right
Interestingly, Fire & Ice is still my favorite song from her. Unbelievable switch from the slow lead-in to the powerful belting voice.
As a little kid, my big sister played Pat all the time. Many consider her Queen of Rock and Roll.
She is one of the most powerful voices you'll encounter ❤
More live Pat Benatar please! "Hell is for Children" is wicked. She made MTV go with her music in the early 80s.
Heck yes….8 platinum Albums for a reason. Pat….love her. The husband is the lead guitarist. They are still together forever.
She is one of the top women in rock history.
"Fire and Ice" is another video from this performance by Pat and Neil.
The way she lays those vocals down on that Rhythm guitar line is perfection! She came to play.
Nice reaction, Neil Giraldo is one of the most under rated guitar players ever. Every Pat Benatar song has a killer guitar solo and he wrote them all.
She is tiny, but her voice is gigantic. Top notch vocalist. Powerful performances, live is amazing, one of my all-time favorites. Seen her live, and you literally can feel her power hit you in the face. Love her!
Pat Benatar has one of the greatest voices in rock ‘n’ roll history in my opinion
It's not an opinion it's a fact my friend. OXOX
The 80s rock music had so many great female lead singers.
She is also famous for her video of "You Better Run" being the 2nd ever video to appear on MTV when it started back in 1981.
Unfortunately MTV is crap now. It use to be soooo good.
One of the underrated singers i think of the 80s. A lot of good songs...All Fired Up, Running with the Shadows are great songs.
Love is a Battlefield and also Hit Me with Your Best Shot are both great songs by her.
Pat was one of the best female singers in the 70's and 80's, Great artist
She is and always have been a highly respected female powerhouse..

Pat is a legendary rock bad ass
She stills tours (71 y.o.) and sounds just as good as she ever did. Austin City Limits gave her the whole hour this year and it was excellent.
I got to see her & Neil in San Diego back in '93, it was a fun show :)
Saw her first show in Houston Dec 79 at a little club in Windsor Plaza. No one showed up. After the show played pin ball with her and the bass player till about 3 in the morning. Great memories of those times.
Pat's "Hell is for children" is powerful!
I love this song she is one of the best female vocalists ever. Still sounds great today. The 80s rule always.

Her song "Suffer the little children " hits hard. I don't know if it was released as a single but it's worth a listen.

That well toned voice of Pat Benatar began in Opera.
Great singer , killer range, Plus Neils guitar work is always spot on!! He also does the guitar solo in Rick Springfield's "jessie's Girl"..

Back in the 80s, girls in school would dress as her. They loved her style.
When Neil Came in for guitar audition Pat said OMG, i hope he can play that guitar because he is hired. So she thought the same thing, he's hot.

Pat's first four or five albums are gold
Been singing since she was only 4 years old and still going strong. And Pat is classically trained. Never autotuned like so many of the artists today.
Neil Giraldo was also John Waite’s lead guitarist on his 80’s stuff. It’s worth checking out also.
The pipes on this one! Just as good there in person.
