Every time I play another area control game, I end up finishing the game and say, "OK, that was good/fine/bad/whatever, but why would I play this instead of El Grande." It's really the perfect area control game.
4:44 “The person with the most cubes scores this much, then the person with the next most cubes scores three...” Today I learned Quinns can’t count to five.
Actually, "El Grande" in this context means "The Great (one)". As in "Alexander the Great" (Alejandro el Grande). Cheers from Spain! (P.S.: Do you actually have to put the black tower over Mallorca? Because that's hillarious - people from there always complain that the weather man covers their island during the forecast... and now this)
Are you making a mistake with Portugal? When we used to play this regularly, we had great fun sending people to Portugal since that would usually not be worth any points ... but then later on someone told me that you're not supposed to be able to do anything with Portugal since it's just there for one of the expansions. I've looked it up and that seems to be correct. Portugal should be ignored if you're playing the base game.
I had the same confusion. The copy of the game in the video had a place In Portugal to put a score bord but mine did not. It's possible that there was some version where Portugal mattered but they changed it.
Small but somewhat important detail. Don't you determine the turn order first, then each player, as the first move of their turn, moves their dudes from the provinces to the court.
It's important, yes. You get the sad men from province to court at the start of your turn... this means, when cards that attack you/remove your dudes effect you, if you've yet to take your turn, you still get dudes for your turn.
So... I was looking up stuff about The King is Dead, and kept coming across references to El Grande. Mostly in the context of "it's ok but El Grande is better" or "it's better for 3 players but otherwise you should get El Grande instead" but there's a few people who like it more, so that was refreshing. And of course, back to the topic... I was like "ok I know I played that but it has to have been more than 20 years ago now" so I looked up this video to remind myself what El Grande actually is. Thanks for the flashbacks to all kinds of jokes that would get me removed from TH-cam for sharing.
I love to know is he still loves el grande that much? is it still the one that he runs out with? I see that in the video with 136/7 games in his collection, but he didn't mention it at all :) even mention the game above and below it but not that one.
Thanks for this! Serious question. What about Portugal? in the OG game its not there. here its there as 0-0-0, in the big box its open but no score pad. Is it usable or avoided as per the base rules?
There is a very IMPORTANT piece of information that needs to be known by the rest of the gaming world, and not just Spanish speakers. Grande (big, in Spanish) is a very similar sounding word to glande (the head of the penis, in Spanish). These are actually true and real words, not made up or slang... it is actually impossible to play this (in Spain) without feeling like its a party game... it also doesnt help that the geography is historically inaccurate. You are welcome ❤
We just played our first bout, but ran out of appropriately coloured caballeros. There isn't anything in the rules of our set that the number should reset to 10 ever, but is that the case?
Did you manage to visit Spain since? I live there and I can tell you that although we have more than enough reason to be sad men we tend to not be. I wonder. If you ever find yourself around Madrid, I would be honoured to show you around the taboo area, just not within.
Partially watched this video before playing El Grande on BGA. I scored horrilby because I missed a few important rules. The game kinda fun but a bit too "mathy" for me.
I like the overall game design of El Grande EXCEPT for the Castille. It only rewards good memory and not strategic play which has nothing to do with actually playing games.
I know what you mean, but afaik there's far more to it than that. Cubes placed into the castillo are useless until the scoring happens. All other cubes are available for you to be manipulated on the board for intermediate scoring. They make it easier for you to score a region and harder for others to score a region. Also for a lot of people, me included, it adds twice to the suspense of the game. First, as you mentioned, the surprise when you realized that you miscalculated and secondly, the mind game of "who sends their cubes to which region" including the "if he thinks that I think that he thinks... etc." Sorry to disagree but it's a brilliant mechanism!
Yeah, this is the one thing that puts me off this game. Some people can memorize numbers, some cannot. You could get the mechanic of locking people there until scoring w/o necessarily hiding the count
Afaik you play the region scoring slightly wrong: If there's a draw both players get the sum of first and second reward devided by 2. Maybe they changed that though?! I have a really old version of this awesome game.
No, ties just bump everyone down a rank. RAW: "If several players have the same number of Caballeros and tie for a rank, these players get the points of the next rank on the scoreboard."
I love how the short interval of Quinns checking the rulebook was left in. True to life! :)
This was absolute chefs kiss
Plus the parakeet squeaking in the background. Just so different from the slick videos they put out now in a really wholesome way

love Matt!! "Why is the king's taboo zone surrounded by so many sad men?"
Sounds like the setup to an epic joke passed down through generations.
I wish they kept doing How to Play videos. I appreciate all of their videos.
Wow, even 7 years ago you were killing it in board game explanation. Thanks!
Thanks for the video. I had forgotten how to play and have to teach it in 20 min. I’m good to go again.

I thought it was funny that a german board game designer decided to throw the reserve armies onto 'Malle' lol
welcome, BGA users
Welcome 2023 edition users
I'm about to play this for the first time on BGA and really looking forward to it after your teach!
Love that Quinn just checks the rule book and it's still in lol
Literally the big one
If you guys haven't done a "how to play" for Cosmic Encounter, you definitely should.
One of my favorite SUSD vids was their CI letplay vimeo.com/117592873
Reminds me of Mission: Red Planet - I guess that's just an expanded/tweaked El Grande.
Same
one of the first games i've ever bought and still have yet to get it to the table.
So here we are 7 years later. Have you managed to table it yet? 😂
Dude you are brilliant! Congrats! I love your videos!
I exactly feel the same about El Grande and I know many people who do. It's one of the best games ever made!
Are you making a mistake with Portugal?

Are you a sad enough dude to rescue the president?
That's a deep cut reference... I dig though.
„Sad Dude“ - You are so lovely! ✌🏻☕️
Editing faff at 8:00?
I am reminded of that scene from Simon The Sorcerer, where the wizards are sitting around a table trying to figure out Mahjong rules.

Great thanks for making me want to buy another game! :D
Thanks for the great video!

A video on the expansions included in this box would be nice
"The king's region is taboo!" deserves to be taken out of context forever. :D
I counted a 22 second pause until I finished laughing. Well done, sir, well done.
Especially when the king looks like that...
Don’t touch it!
And the best part is after anyone plays a 10 or 11 we all get to sing the Caballero song while they bring their dude into the court.
Nice use of the yellow filter here, its like im in Spain!
El Grande ... that was my ex-girlfriends nick name for me, she was from Salamanca. And then I woke up and had cornflakes...
Nice Job! It's on my Christmas wish list!
Are they making a reprint of this bad boy? i heard that rumor

"El Grande" The big... The big what? THE BIG WHAT QUINNS?
Did you manage to visit Spain since? I live there and I can tell you that although we have more than enough reason to be sad men we tend to not be. I wonder. If you ever find yourself around Madrid, I would be honoured to show you around the taboo area, just not within.
El Grande
aaah thats how.
So I see that in the new Z-man edition Sad Men are being replaced by Sad Meeples.
Do you prefer this to Blood Rage? I'm thinking so.
Jake Kamps susd doesn't like blood rage
You're right, I had forgotten that. I do.
Victory points
Who goes first? Quinns always goes first, even when not playing the game, particularly even if not in the same country.
Awsome stuff guys just confirmed another game I'll be running uit of a blazing house with ; )
hi love your videos could you please do review of Robinson Crusoe baord game :)
I want to know what word Quinns was going to say.
Probably "wiener".
Cock.
Partially watched this video before playing El Grande on BGA. I scored horrilby because I missed a few important rules. The game kinda fun but a bit too "mathy" for me.
He starts by saying it's an old game, very old game and that was 7 years ago 😂 so today it's what?🤔

Hogy lehet benne használni a Cringe TV TH-camr Híradót?
Wasn't actually that good of a how to play. :( Lots of rules missing, so people please check rule book or other videos before you play.
Holy shit. This game has the basque country in it. I feel like i need to get it now.
