I just want to mention, that the box is both wider and deeper. This makes me think they made that extra space for the people who likes to sleeve their cards, and still have it fit in the box.
The reason for making the box *wide* enough to fit sleeved cards is surely so you can sleeve cards, not add more cards (which would only require depth)
I hate when companies don't do this. Looking at you new mtg percon boxes. Like you just have to make the box a couple mm larger to fit everything with sleeves.
I'm so glad I discovered this game before SU&SD reviewed it 😅it's so obviously For Me, I hope the publisher can get a fresh run out soon enough to satisfy everyone whose curiosity is piqued, it's a really good game
I'm lucky I managed to find it somewhere. Me and my friend loved Air, Land and Sea but felt we had run our course with it after about a dozen plays. This looks like it has far more longevity.
I'm so glad to see you cover games like these, I find myself mostly playing with 2 and there's nothing I love more than a small box that packs a big punch. They're also better for the environment! (And very often, my wallet!)
I’m at 1:41 and I just purchased the game. I love Air Land & Sea, it stays in my car so I can pull it out and play at the pub. I bought this one to sit on my shelf and be admired.
Thanks for the review - just snap decided to pick this one up - and even happier that you shouted out Netrunner! We focus exclusively on that game and are always trying to get new players to come join in - I'm sure this mention will cause plenty of folks to have a look at it. Cheers!
When I walked into the game store today to buy this, I told the employee I was looking for Compile, and he said, "That's weird. The guy walking out right now also just bought it."
You guys are absolutely the best. The mix of humor, honesty, and crunchy game breakdown-downs is in my opinion, the pinnacle of game review channels. As an aspiring game designer and writer, thank so much
I bought this game a couple weeks ago on a whim from my local shop (in California). Sorry to hear that it seems to be out of stock everywhere now, it’s so much fun!
The expansion having the domain of Apathy to go alongside Love and Hate is just so perfect that it has probably singlehandedly convinced me to buy this game
I picked this up at Gencon this year and this was definitely the game of the con for me. I instantly picked it up after playing the demo along with the expansion and play mat. Such a great game!
This sounds like the game that I've always wanted but never really could puta finger on and express in words. Very keen on trying it, booked a copy halfway through the review!
"and that baby came out wearing a full leather trenchcoat and wraparound shades" You already said it was a baby with The Matrix so you're repeating yourself!
I had this in an online cart this morning, but I didn't complete the purchase because I knew the review was coming and didn't want to get caught off guard by a surprise downside... Should've completed the purchase.
Went to order it immediately but is already out of stock. Any game that makes me think I’m playing Netrunner without playing Netrunner is a direct buy for me.
I first saw this at PAX East, and I picked it up at Gen Con primarily because I thought the cards looked cool with their particular finish and foil accents 😅. Lucky for me, the game was surprisingly interesting on top of this
This game feels like it could've used some basic iconography. An icon for flip a card, an icon for draw a card, etc. Things like that. It looks like there's too much text to instantly grok a board state.
@@nyghost9991 I'm sure it's good. I just believe it would be better with some elementary iconography. Android netrunner was mentioned. There's a good example.
Omen: A Reign of War is another phenomenal take on this style of game. It’s every bit as good (probably better) than the likes of Air Land and Sea, Compile, Smash Up, etc.
I picked up Starfighter at a convention a couple years ago. I assume it's out of print now, but it uses almost exactly these same card mechanics. Abilities activate when they become visible, and you can use them to move, flip, and rotate yours or your opponent's cards. The presentation is way better on this than on Starfighter, but it's a little uncanny how similar they are. I half expected it to be the same designer.
I can happily recommend "Sea Salt & Paper" as a small game alternative for people who want a small very clever card game but their wife can't get past the sci-fi visuals of Compile. On the other hand, I as a "hardcore" gamer also enjoy it.
@8:26 As somebody who recently went from being someone who likes the idea of playing Netrunner, to being someone who now owns a copy of System Gateway: Remastered, thus securing the physical possibility to embrace the reality of being someone who plays Netrunner, I really appreciate this comment. And now I want to play that game even more. (Pass on Compile, though - I'll play Air, Land and Sea when I get a hankering for that kind of lane-manipulation.)
I just want to mention, that the box is both wider and deeper. This makes me think they made that extra space for the people who likes to sleeve their cards, and still have it fit in the box.
Nope, the cards are actually plastic. The space is for the expansions I guess
The reason for making the box *wide* enough to fit sleeved cards is surely so you can sleeve cards, not add more cards (which would only require depth)
If they’re really big brain - it’s for both.
Can confirm, my sleeved cards fit in the box
I hate when companies don't do this. Looking at you new mtg percon boxes. Like you just have to make the box a couple mm larger to fit everything with sleeves.
Art direction on this is great. The glitched typeface immediately brought me back to my very, very, almost scandalously well used Lunch Money cards.
Except, unlike Lunch Money, this is actually a good game.
I didn't get Lunch Money vibes initially but now that you've pointed it out I can't unsee it.
I really enjoyed doing flavourful descriptions of the attacks in lunch money
It hasn't even been out for 24 hours and already it is out of stock everywhere? It just makes me even more hyped!

I'm gonna go looks for it at my LGS later today I think!
I just got lucky... ordered it as soon as I saw the video, and it became out of stock a bite while after. Wouldn't get here till November, though 😅
Well I grabbed it at Essen haha
This was my #1 at Gencon. Went to the release party and had a blast talking to the designer. Fantastic game and expect more expansions to come.

It's good but the rules are not clear on many things.
It's such an easy game but there are a lot of situations where you don't know how to play
I've heard many people talk about pulling out games at the pub. Is that a UK thing? Its not seen here in NA but how I wish it was 😢

Can confirm that both Netrunner and Compile are great games! Also can confirm that this Neon Static fellow makes some top quality Netrunner content.
Came here to say this! Love netrunner and Neon Static!
Where did you get it from?
@@Vlorps-e9z Compile I picked up on Amazon, and the aux pack and playmat at my FLGS. Netrunner I picked up from the Null Signal Games web page.

Same even here in Germany XD
On the topic of head-to-head card games of this nature, I'd love to see you guys review Sakura Arms!
Hell yeah. Especially as there was a re-release recently (last year?)
4:19 that shuffle is hilarious
Me trying to look like a croupier
Not sure how @SUSD filmed me shuffling from way ‘cross the pond, but touché
This was one of my favorite Gencon surprises. Such an easy recommendation at $20+$5 mini expansion which you should absolutely just get right away
You guys are amazing. Thanks for the review of this cool little gem.
Also, I love the mug. So fancy!

If it weren't for the family show comment nobody would've noticed.
You KNOW what you did
Really makes you roll the word compile around a bit, don't it?
Obviously.
So, Air Land and Sea 2.0 which sounds cool.

yah and the link to actual card game is leading back to the playmat. Something is broken or out of stock...

I got Air, Land & Sea for christmas last year and I really like it.
I like Air Land & Sea, but this definitely looks like a theme that will be easier to get people to play than war.
Dang, already sold out. Definitely keeping an eye out for a restock of this one though. Great recommendation.
This is my #1 from Essen! I feel cool now, too B-)
Hey Matt, thnaks for the recommendation! Excited to start my new life of crime! 👍

Good luck finding the game this year. It’s a card game. Should’ve been easy to manufacture and have enough in stock from the beginning.
