    Just got some Mallet E's and Lace shoes myself. Went for my first ride around the house and just clipped n unclipped about 100 times. Definitely need the practice and to wear them in. Gnarly crash man. I've winded myself twice, first time was similar to yours and I was making T-Rex noises too 😂 The second, well, I don't remember, pre-hoped into a roller at full speed and landed deep, broke 11 ribs. Was off the bike for 9 weeks. Great video, thanks for making it! First vid of yours that I've watched. Subed. Keep the stoke alive👍

    For people new to clipless pedals I recommend finding something you ride that is about a foot wide and a foot high. A log or railroad tie will do. Then ride it slowly. Balancing will cause you to unclip and clip back in a lot, the drop off will add some stress to the situation so it's much better than just concrete practice. You can then move onto lower wood rails/bridges with some turns and continue doing it at a low enough speed that you need to balance and that is where you will get really dialed in on clipping under duress.

      Seriously I was thinking the same. Those are almost worse than OTB cause you roll better on OTB. Washing out sucks big time.
      I currently have a bruised rib (shit it might be fractured I dunno it's been 2 weeks lol) but it wasn't from a wash out.. I did the classic pull off to the side of a rocky shoot, wheel gets stuck and you're not ready to shift your weight onto the side of the trail annnnnnnddd instead you roll back into the off camber shoot then you roll the rocks on your ribs. Super fun.. The dumb crashes always hurt the most.. maybe pride has some nerve endings too... lol

    I’m pretty new to clipless but I found that riding trails that I know really well makes it a lot easier to get used to clipping in and out on trail. Rode SPD’s for a week that I borrowed from a friend and switched over to a set of Mallet E’s right after.

      @@JaredHoff I rode them on a hardtail and had a horrible time, tried them again two years later on a full suspension and it clicked right away. • @thomasmedeiros5722

    I been riding clipless since 1990. I came into Mountain bikes from road riding and racing. I highly recommend the Shimano SPD pedal and cleat system for those who want to start using clipless. First the Shimano pedal has adjustable spring tension that you can set. Second they offer a multi direction cleat that is much easier to release from the pedal. The SH 56 M is the multi release model. The pedals come with the SH 51 which is the single release out towards the side. My understanding is the Crank Brothers pedals don’t have these two options.

    • @JaredHoff
      @JaredHoff  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the info. I’ve heard that SPDs are easier to unclip, and probably easier for a beginner to use.

    • @twistedneck
      @twistedneck 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my experience, I started on Speed Play Frogs, went to SPD’s, then to Time then to the first iteration of Mallets. The Crank Bros cleat/spring interface IMO is hands down the best. I never did like SPD Shimamo’s but that could have been the shoes. This was late 90’s so shoes were all basically road race shoes so YMMV. I can exit my Mallet pedals faster than I can get my foot off my Stamp 7’s. I’ve just stated trying out flats and have come to the conclusion I don’t like them. That could be the result of 30 years on clips but I like BMX so I thought they’d translate to MTB well. Not for me they didn’t. Not only do Rocky sections bounce me off of them(even when I try to dig heels in) but I can’t do jumps as well with flats since my style of jumping pretty much depends on clips. I simply jump in the air with my feet- the bike follows (it’s got no choice really!) with a 165mm travel Enduro bike, I didn’t feel like I could bunny hop properly like I can on a BMX bike. Oh well, I tried. Just my $.02

    I been riding clipped in for 30 years on dirt and road. When the power is being applied clips are king, but going slow on a surface that throws your balance it can be tricky
    I have adjusted the clip pressure to a low level and I have no problem removing my feet, YES this did take some time too readjust my mind set for the automatic reaction.
    I have ridden 34km for deep soft sand and loosing control was a consistent thing, so I move my foot on the pedal so I was not clipped in, as putting my feet down was constantly necessary. Speed in sand is a different thing , clips are king.
    Doing big tricks/big jumps????????????, you have better control with clips, but when things get messed up and you have too bail, no clips are best.
    Anyway keep using them and it will become 2nd nature once you find the clips that suit you and your style.
    I'm keeping my feet clipped in.
