thanks a lot for the very well done comparison, I was not sure to discard the Shimano's Spd platform pedal because I thought the added platform surface was useless, and now I am sure I was right. If I am riding Spd's the basic 520 will get the job done. I will try Crankbrothers. And I was wondering if you tried the Mallet 2, and if I had a good contact surface in case I wanted to go out with flat shoes. Thanks again!!!

Double Shot 3 is the best for me for enduro, clip in when riding uphill, flat on jump and drop. takes practice to flip the pedal using it for 4years. Crank Brother is the BEST.

Just ordered the double shot 3 for my first clipless pedal. Super excited to try them out in the spring

Saves me time. Thanks for the review been eyeing the Mallet E for a while. I got Time Special 8 and its been awesome to me for 1 1/2 years now and still going. I wanted to have a little more platform so i can use my flat shoes when doing gravity related stuff.

Thanks for the review. I'm really torn between the Mallet and the Double Shot and there's not a lot of comparison vids out there.

Great video - I’m a 30yr SPD guy as well and I need to make the same decision this week when I pick up my new MTB. I think I’ll end up just running 2 sets of pedals, but I really valued your insights.

You didn't show your shoes, but I assume the reason you don't feel any difference between the M520 and the XT8020 is due to using XC-type shoes with a rigid carbon sole, which is made for the M520 type of pedals. XT8020s go with trail/enduro-type shoes where the cleat is recessed and there's a soft outsole around to make contact with the wider platform.

I’m using the Fizik Terra, nice soft sole on them. Pretty cool shoes.

@@TXMTBN I'd agree with above, Shimano AM shoes have a very recessed cleat so the boot is touching the pedal with Saints and XT8120's etc. I run Saints and AM7's and it's incredible.

Totally fair. I have my lapel mic on but had tech difficulties with it on this on. Thanks for stopping by!

I just started riding a set of Crankbrothers Mallet E’s after riding flat pedals for almost 5 years and while there is a learning curve I’m looking forward to getting my setup dialed since the added control is great.

Double shot is good for me because I'm still learning to clip in and I like being able to go down sketchy stuff on a flat

Thanks this helps a lot. I'm also looking for a hybrid that I can put on my gravel bike. I want to be clipped in when riding for fun but a flat for just going to the store or work or whatever. I was thinking of getting the mallet and it even comes in a green color similar to my frame color. This helped me make my decision.

The only reason l would go with the Mallet E would be the fact that you can ride down tbe local shops with your work boots on and then clip in for the weekend MTB park....
The pedals are not perfect though the reason they don't spin properly is because the have a sealed bearing and a bushing.
A small change to the pedal design so that the bushing is replaced with a sealed bearing so two sealed bearings are used would help reduce friction and maintenance.
Shimano SPD type pedals are good but the design does not allow for comfortable normal shoe wear no matter what the design.....

Good and timely video- Thanks! Judging from the bridge ditch- how does the brass cleat feel in relation yo the spd ‘pop’ click?

Wow Thanks! saves me from having to buy them all myself! How does the mallet-e do on the little errand rides with street shoes? I'm worried the clip-in mechanism might stick up too much

I went with the Mallet-es and I find them to be great for cruising in a flat shoe.

Do you use the longer axle to make sure to clip out easier? Have you had experience with the different length axles?

    • @TXMTBN

This is new information for me, never used a longer axle. Interesting.

The Shimano Saints are 1.2 kg for the pair, not 1.2 lb. How da fuq is this guy sharing advice when he doesn't know what he's talkign about?

    • @TXMTBN
      @TXMTBN  ปีที่แล้ว +6

They are 546g which is 1.2lbs : ) if they weighed 1.2kg that would make them ridiculously heavy at 2.65lbs.
