I found that adding PVA helps to make the mix more "spreadable" and results in a stronger bond. But this has been my got to technique for bases for years. The other one is to spread pva on the base and dip it in a mix of unsanded tile grout and sand for a desert look.

@@Philtopy Because there's a chance there's life in it, and depending on what it is and how hardy it is, it might break through all that, it might die and rot, it might compromise the base. 0:17 Jay...I have no words to convey my bewilderment at this moment.
Seriously though its good to put out such a simple one for the beginner. For many years I based the majority of my minis by using green flock over glue and then a very light sprinkle of wheat colored flock to emphasize some dead grass in the green. Then I eventually started adding small rocks that I found that worked well with the size. Later on I started adding long grass in spots and hand trimming. Then started using pre-made grass tufts. I even used a snow texture paste that I found at a crafts stores for the base of a D&D Frost Giant that I painted (I was using a wood base and the moisture in that product warped the heck out of it, lol).
EoBs original videos are the ones that introduced me to using cork and for years now any time I go to thrift stores I look for cheap sources for cork (usually cork wall tiles and cork cooking pot coasters). Its amazing how a good base can enhance a beginner's paint jobs and give them the confidence to try more techniques and skills. You guys are doing good work!

I absolutely hate basing. I use texture paint and paint the rim black and call it done (I often times like with my world eaters mark out individual units since I got a lot of berserkers and they are a “dispersed horde” of many 5 man units and I like it for the organization and keeping track of kill tallies)
I’ve also glued cut up cereal/model boxes like they’re tiles on the bases and then dry brush them.

Still hunting for a non-gw crackle paint that works and is available. Most crackles don't work well or require two layers to work and then still not the same heavy body gesso + crackle that the GW uses. There used to be one available but it's been "unavailable" for years. It is pretty easy to replicate the cracking sandy mud texture GW uses but the actual crackle dry mud? Much harder.

Viva crackling color creates more of the little island effects that you see from GW which looks good for magma/lava. Apply them on top of a gloss varnished or pva layered surface for max crackle effect

Seeing a Marine on an industrial walkway with rocks and skulls at his feet, or a British paratrooper on the second floor of a house with a bush and muddy base, kinda looks sill to me. I used base my 28/30mm figures with clear plastic. Major cop-out, I know. ;)

I think you should always get a black rim on the bases, because the black rim is nothing, (it s represent void so to speak) if you have a beige base and then have a beige rim it'll look like you got your whole army standing on small bumps unintentionally, if you want your army or a comander to stand on a bumb you should base it in such a way (in my opinion)
