I agree it had its moments, but not once did it reach where the hype had it. 7.0 was my farewell (I hesitate to say "for good" since I've left WoW and SWTOR enough only to return lol). There was so much feedback from us Beta testers that was either ignored or basically thumbed at. Sad when you consider just how good it MIGHT have been.
@@JedForge given how long games like that take to develop, I feel like EA is to blame for swtor not living up to the hype. I'm assuming development began a few years before EA acquired Bioware but after EA came in I'm sure they wanted Bioware to launch the game so money could start coming in. I can't exactly prove this, but MMOs take a long time to develop so I'd be willing to bet it wasn't EA's choice to make the game, but it was their choice to release when they did. If EA never acquired Bioware, a lot of their games might have been much better with swtor included, because I'm sure they would've let it cook a little longer, maybe an extra year or two so it could launch in a better state with more content, and even to this day it might have more support if it wasn't for EA just wanting to nickel and dime the players in every way possible and only release new content once a year or so.
As a lover of TLOU I purposely went into the sequel blind so I wouldn't be biased and could just enjoy it for what it was. I called Joel dying as soon as I started playing, thought he would die to the zombies not people though. And I can say it found it a outstanding meh of a game, maybe a bit on the negative side of meh. I think it would have done much better if Abby's part was first, maybe the journey to get to Joel. But my main problem is the developers tried to force you to like Abby and feel bad for what you were doing but, at least to me, it made me feel more like she was a sociopath who dragged her 'friends' down with her and should have got what was coming to her. Also then ending, would have been so much better I think if Ellie went through with it and then had to deal with everything she lost to achieve it and maybe a short epilogue showing the aftermath.
Because of the current climate in the gaming community, it’s important to recognize signs of a game destined to disappoint so one can be prepared for the worst, say if it’s constantly being delayed, if it’s development team sounds skeptical in their social medias, if the only trailers out are all cinemas, if it’s been developed by EA or Blizzard, etc, curb your enthusiasm
Sadly, that approach doesn't seem to be working; even after the travesty of Fallout 76, despite how fun it is, its launch was untimely broken. And people are still hyped for Starfield; I get they are using a new engine which is ultimately, just an upgrade of the Creation Engine. But they've really gotta curb that hype until Bethesda releases a not broken game.

I disagree about The Old Republic being on this list. It wasn't it's hype that ruined it, it was the transition to an MMO. The previous games were solid single player experiences and switching from a single player RPG to an MMO changes the game on a fundamental level. Sure you 'can' play the game by yourself, but after a certain point, it's clear bosses are designed to handle a bunch of players, areas are designed for multiple people to explore at once, and the leveling is artificially stunted for anyone not subscribed. Which means you're at a even worse disadvantage if you're doing free to play and solo play. The franchise went from incredible single player games to a mediocre mmo with pretty good voice acting and not much else.
I don't know who was hyped for Knack but alright. I also don't remember seeing or reading any articles saying that The Old Republic would be the WoW killer as they are vastly different in terms of settings and story. Not necessarily made for 2 different gamers but I myself was drawn much more to The Old Republic because of it's way of telling interesting stories through cutscenes and actual dialogue with voice actors.
SW:ToR was most definitely being hyped as a WoW killer, and I laughed so hard back then saying "This game is doomed". Every game that tried to hype themselves as a WoW killer fell on their face. Though admittedly SW:ToR wasn't as bad as most of the others making that claim.

Reference The last of us Part 2. Firstly, there is a difference between a 'commercial success' and a game that lives up to its hype. I mean, RE6 sold 10 million copies and I doubt anyone would proclaim that a masterpiece. Secondly, the expected plot for the game wasn't just some fan induced fever dream. It was an expectation based on the OFFICIAL teasers for the game. In the trailers Naughty Dog swapped out other characters in the actual game for Joel in order to infer that he played a far larger role in the story than he actually did. Quite frankly it was dishonest marketing.

All I am saying is the stink kicked up upon its release is less about 'bigots' and more about how Naughty dog managed the expectations of the player base. Neil specifically stated this before release: "i dont see joel and ellie without them they are the heart of the game" Naughty Dog also stated Ellie was the only playable character and inserted the older character model of Joel into pivotal scenes in Ellies 'quest for vengeance' in order to infer that the story centered around Ellie with Joel supporting, a seeming reversal of the first game. Instead Joel is unceremoniously offed in the first few hours of the game, his act of 'necessary evil and redemption' in the first game is brushed off as pure evil and Ellie and Joel are usurped as the focus of the narrative for Abby and Lev. It is easy to understand why many Fans of the game were annoyed and why they will be wary of purchasing the third installment should it come out.
Dark Souls 2 sucked. A lot. It's the pure embodiment of what every newcomer thinks what Dark Souls is: Gank fests galore and unfair difficulty. And my gosh I hated the 8 directional movement.
Nice of you not to include Andromeda and Cyberpunk 2077 on the list. Whilst both have/have had some serious issues, people do mention these two in the same breath with "disappointing" way too often. On the other hand you seldom hear anything about From Soft games being poorly optimized for PC, every Bethesda game being riddled with bugs, Forza Horizon 5 just not being that much different than the one before and so on...
What a dismissive and unfair look at why fans were upset with TLOU part 2. I just don’t want to play a 30 hour game that just seeks to prove how terrible the protagonists of the 1st game are by heavy handedly having them murder dogs and pregnant women.
Was there really that big of a mystery about who the Arkham Knight was? I remember guessing right away that it was Jason Todd and when they announced the Red Hood dlc was announced it was basically confirmed.
Ah yes TLOU2. Though i liked the gameplay, i was hung up about getting revenge for Joel’s death that couldn’t be bothered to care about Abby and the fireflies. I would have preferred it if TLOU2 was purely on Abby’s perspective and a proper telling of the fireflies’ story and the consequences of a mad man’s actions at the fireflies base while Abby was young- fueling an obsession for a cross country man hunt which would then will lead to a boss battle against the men Abby and the team have been tracking for years, only to reveal that the final bosses to be Joel and Tommy. Even though its derivative,bi think gamers would appreciate the plot twist that you’ve played the first game as the big bad guy. The end scene would be Joel’s death and Elie’s reveal. Game title. Game ends. Credits roll. A stand alone Expansion can be about Lev’s arc- and TLOU3 can focus on Elie’s revenge.
Forgets to mention Sony's attacks on reviewers and people reporting on the news of The Last of Us 2 leaks existing and the general toxic behaviour of Sony and Naughty Dog (Especially)
@@jameshall1600 Not everybody hated it, there are a lot of us that actually enjoyed it. I agree with the point about false advertising in the trailer. People should be remembering that this story takes place in the apocalypse and people are going to be violent and people (including main characters) are likely to die at any time and usually in a violent manner. Honestly, was anyone really surprised that Joel was killed off. The surprise the manner in which it happened more than how early it happened.
I agree. I'm happy that Hello Games have tried to improved their games and it certainly has on many aspects, but it's still a 5/10 game after all those patches. No Man's Sky sure lived up to it's name.
I remember hearing at one point that Spore had so much more planned that ended up being cut but I don't know much more than that (like if it's even true). It's a pity. I got Spore when it first came out and I really did enjoy the game... when it could be bothered to work
SWTOR DEFINITELY did not defeat WoW. Buuuuut, as it is now, it is very much an enjoyable MMO. And you can get pretty far into it without paying a penny. I'd at least recommend an MMO fan to give it a shot. It isn't anywhere near as good as KOTOR, but their characters have more of a storyline than WoW player characters
Sadly, the negative reaction to Watch Dogs 1 carried over to Watch Dogs 2 which was an outstanding game and should have been given more of a chance by players. It is my favorite of the series. For me, Watch Dogs 1 was too dark and they made Watch Dogs Legion way more complicated than it needed to be. Watch Dogs 2 was the perfect answer to the first game and they should have stuck with the elements from that game for the third game.
Ugh I can see Silksong going this direction. It will probably be a great game but people have hyped it in their head so much, and have been waiting for so long, that it almost seems impossible for the game to live up to fan's expectations.
I fear this as well. One thing Team Cherry has done that I think will have helped is keep the announcements, advertisements, and PR for the game quiet. Hopefully that has helped tone down what could be quite a frenetic amount of hype... 🤞🏼 That being said, I'm so excited!!!!!! 😜
I love knack,it’s the first video game I ever got for my ps4 at launch in 2013,love that franchise sense hoping for knack 3 or tv cartoon series too. I love everything about the last of us part 2 many others too. Fantastic job on the video Jules from what culture gaming.
The biggest problem I had with TLOU2 was the fact that they lied in trailers especially in the scene Joel says something like "you think I let you do this on your own?" Wasn't Joel in the final product, it was Jesse. The fact that wanted me to belive that Joel is a big part of this game just to find out he actually isn't was the thing that made think about twince next time they release a game. The story was also poorly written.
I am glad I didn't buy or play that game. Joel not being in the main game because ( you know what happened) disappointed me with how much he was shown before the game's release.
My problem with TLOU2 (along with many others reviews I’ve seen) wasn’t that the story didn’t go where I wanted it to. I didn’t like that they destroyed any character development built in the original game around both Ellie and Joel, and went for shock value over story development.
I miss Cyberpunk 2077 and Fallout 76 in this list. And Batman Arkham Knight on Xbox was a solid game. I had no problems playing it and I enjoyed it a lot.

Fable? WTF he promised more than he delivered but that was a great game regardless. Thus hardly ruined. . Last of Us Part 2 is not over hype its a developer hating their previous work, and spending the sequel destroying the first game, all the while trying to hide they made a game whose story shot everything else in the foot if not leg. Praised by "critics" who live via access isn't good. Basically the modern Star Wars/Star Trek of video games. . SWTOR wasn't over hype, its always been a game where its a better RPG than MMO and the launch end game wasn't enough to stand up to WoW.
I really enjoyed Spore and still go back and poke at it now and then, but have no qualms about saying it has a very shallow gene pool. Lots to like in it, the segments are fun, but all of them besides the space stage are done in well under an hour. The later release that allowed for special space exploration missions was fun, but far too little too late.

Underrated games, or games that have fallen flat after overhype upon release isn’t always a bad thing….especially for players who are late to the game. I only just played Watchdogs 2 a couple of years ago, after being put off by the lacklustre feedback it received and have to say, I really enjoyed it.
In the case of SWTOR it wasn't hype that ruined it. It was the fact that people wanted a proper conclusion to KOTOR rather than a crappy MMO. Also, The Last of Us 2 was in no way disappointing. Joel got what he deserved, and anyone who sent death threats to devs and VO artists is a disgrace.

The fable games are underrated. All of them are very good. It's the same situation as with cyberpunk, If only they didn't oversell it with ridiculous promises, would have been able to appreciate it for what it was instead of lament for what it isn't
The explanation regarding The Last of Us Part 2 applies to so many other games. People make up their minds as to what to expect in a follow up to a beloved game. When the reality doesn’t EXACTLY follow what they envisioned, they revolt, usually in pretty disgusting ways. Look at Phisnom’s response (and the response in general) to FNAF Security Breach as a prime example. Security Breach is another game ruined primarily by overhype.
I’ve played and beaten Batman Arkham knight four times (once on xbone, twice on ps4, once on ps5) 0 bugs. Not one ever. I get the PC version was buggy. But on console never had a bug glitch or anything. Great game
Arkham knight is an amazing game and I loved the Batmobile & Riddler sections. WCG needs to get off the hate train on what is a legitimately good game.
TLOU2 was very polarizing and I really hated Joel dying but in the end the entire game is a love note to Joel. There's a lot of things in the game you need to think about to understand so on the surface they are easy to miss, in the macro of it all the whole story revolves around how much everyone loves Joel. And to be honest, in retrospect as much as I also loved Joel he was quiet and fulfilled his character arc, which was the entirety of the first game. He didn't have a ton left to offer. They managed to make a revenge plot you actually care about. It's just all the Abby play that threw it off.
also what they tryna teach you is that joel and ellie, as much as we understand and love them, in the first game are what you would consider “ villains “ much like abby is considered that in part two. you could argue that joel is a anti hero but in reality we’re all a villain in someone’s life.. plus he was never a good man again once he lost his daughter and basically killed the entire world to “ get her bacc “. at what cost tho and that’s what that part two answers. that’s y we play as abby, because she is ellie. a lot of the philosophy of the game came after the first playthrough and a week of thinking ab it.
Dark souls 2 isn't generally hated by fans more that it's the worst dark souls because of slow gameplay continuity of level design like the lava being over a mountain the game has a light on the player at all times making it look cheap. Most first time deaths would be from banking if 10 weak enemies or uninformed traps than actually you dieing because you need to be better. Oh yeah and you have to pay for s when rolling there's alot if things that is wrong with ds2 compared to any souls game

Firstly, there is a difference between a 'commercial success' and a game that lives up to its hype. I mean, RE6 sold 10 million copies and I doubt anyone would proclaim that a masterpiece.
Secondly, the expected plot for the game wasn't just some fan induced fever dream. It was an expectation based on the OFFICIAL teasers for the game.
In the trailers Naughty Dog swapped out other characters in the actual game for Joel in order to infer that he played a far larger role in the story than he actually did.
Quite frankly it was dishonest marketing.
I definitely agree with you on the marketing. With that said, I still really enjoyed the game.

All I am saying is the stink kicked up upon its release is less about 'bigots' and more about how Naughty dog managed the expectations of the player base.
Neil specifically stated this before release:

Naughty Dog also stated Ellie was the only playable character and inserted the older character model of Joel into pivotal scenes in Ellies 'quest for vengeance' in order to infer that the story centered around Ellie with Joel supporting, a seeming reversal of the first game.
Instead Joel is unceremoniously offed in the first few hours of the game, his act of 'necessary evil and redemption' in the first game is brushed off as pure evil and Ellie and Joel are usurped as the focus of the narrative for Abby and Lev.
It is easy to understand why many Fans of the game were annoyed and why they will be wary of purchasing the third installment should it come out.
It baffles me that gamers really send death threats to developers when a game doesn’t meet their expectations smh.
Must be the same crowd that gets so riled up when a Star Wars movie doesn't meet their expectations.

Nice of you not to include Andromeda and Cyberpunk 2077 on the list. Whilst both have/have had some serious issues, people do mention these two in the same breath with "disappointing" way too often. On the other hand you seldom hear anything about From Soft games being poorly optimized for PC, every Bethesda game being riddled with bugs, Forza Horizon 5 just not being that much different than the one before and so on...
Everyone knows Beth games are riddled with bugs on PC and console on release... they are always talked about aka FNV

What a dismissive and unfair look at why fans were upset with TLOU part 2. I just don’t want to play a 30 hour game that just seeks to prove how terrible the protagonists of the 1st game are by heavy handedly having them murder dogs and pregnant women.

Was there really that big of a mystery about who the Arkham Knight was? I remember guessing right away that it was Jason Todd and when they announced the Red Hood dlc was announced it was basically confirmed.
Ah yes TLOU2. Though i liked the gameplay, i was hung up about getting revenge for Joel’s death that couldn’t be bothered to care about Abby and the fireflies. I would have preferred it if TLOU2 was purely on Abby’s perspective and a proper telling of the fireflies’ story and the consequences of a mad man’s actions at the fireflies base while Abby was young- fueling an obsession for a cross country man hunt which would then will lead to a boss battle against the men Abby and the team have been tracking for years, only to reveal that the final bosses to be Joel and Tommy. Even though its derivative,bi think gamers would appreciate the plot twist that you’ve played the first game as the big bad guy. The end scene would be Joel’s death and Elie’s reveal. Game title. Game ends. Credits roll. A stand alone Expansion can be about Lev’s arc- and TLOU3 can focus on Elie’s revenge.
Forgets to mention Sony's attacks on reviewers and people reporting on the news of The Last of Us 2 leaks existing and the general toxic behaviour of Sony and Naughty Dog (Especially)

@@jameshall1600 Not everybody hated it, there are a lot of us that actually enjoyed it. I agree with the point about false advertising in the trailer. People should be remembering that this story takes place in the apocalypse and people are going to be violent and people (including main characters) are likely to die at any time and usually in a violent manner. Honestly, was anyone really surprised that Joel was killed off. The surprise the manner in which it happened more than how early it happened.
As someone who bought into the hype of SWTOR I agree with everything that was said. The game is in an awful state and the last patch was just crap.

SWTOR DEFINITELY did not defeat WoW. Buuuuut, as it is now, it is very much an enjoyable MMO. And you can get pretty far into it without paying a penny. I'd at least recommend an MMO fan to give it a shot. It isn't anywhere near as good as KOTOR, but their characters have more of a storyline than WoW player characters

I love Watch Dogs. It made me want to get into Cyber Security. I like The Old Republic more than WOW.
Sadly, the negative reaction to Watch Dogs 1 carried over to Watch Dogs 2 which was an outstanding game and should have been given more of a chance by players. It is my favorite of the series. For me, Watch Dogs 1 was too dark and they made Watch Dogs Legion way more complicated than it needed to be. Watch Dogs 2 was the perfect answer to the first game and they should have stuck with the elements from that game for the third game.

Ugh I can see Silksong going this direction. It will probably be a great game but people have hyped it in their head so much, and have been waiting for so long, that it almost seems impossible for the game to live up to fan's expectations.
I fear this as well. One thing Team Cherry has done that I think will have helped is keep the announcements, advertisements, and PR for the game quiet. Hopefully that has helped tone down what could be quite a frenetic amount of hype... 🤞🏼 That being said,

I love knack,it’s the first video game I ever got for my ps4 at launch in 2013,love that franchise sense hoping for knack 3 or tv cartoon series too. I love everything about the last of us part 2 many others too. Fantastic job on the video Jules from what culture gaming.
The biggest problem I had with TLOU2 was the fact that they lied in trailers especially in the scene Joel says something like "you think I let you do this on your own?" Wasn't Joel in the final product, it was Jesse. The fact that wanted me to belive that Joel is a big part of this game just to find out he actually isn't was the thing that made think about twince next time they release a game. The story was also poorly written.
I am glad I didn't buy or play that game. Joel not being in the main game because ( you know what happened) disappointed me with how much he was shown before the game's release.

Movies and games advertise characters and scenes in a false way all the time, it's nothing new.
My problem with TLOU2 (along with many others reviews I’ve seen) wasn’t that the story didn’t go where I wanted it to. I didn’t like that they destroyed any character development built in the original game around both Ellie and Joel, and went for shock value over story development.
…and now all we’re left with is She-hulk and Lev to carry the rest of the series if Sony decide they want part 3.
I think I’ll nope out of that one.

Last of Us Part 2 is not over hype its a developer hating their previous work, and spending the sequel destroying the first game, all the while trying to hide they made a game whose story shot everything else in the foot if not leg. Praised by "critics" who live via access isn't good. Basically the modern Star Wars/Star Trek of video games.

SWTOR wasn't over hype, its always been a game where its a better RPG than MMO and the launch end game wasn't enough to stand up to WoW.
I really enjoyed Spore and still go back and poke at it now and then, but have no qualms about saying it has a very shallow gene pool. Lots to like in it, the segments are fun, but all of them besides the space stage are done in well under an hour. The later release that allowed for special space exploration missions was fun, but far too little too late.

Underrated games, or games that have fallen flat after overhype upon release isn’t always a bad thing….especially for players who are late to the game. I only just played Watchdogs 2 a couple of years ago, after being put off by the lacklustre feedback it received and have to say, I really enjoyed it.
In the case of SWTOR it wasn't hype that ruined it. It was the fact that people wanted a proper conclusion to KOTOR rather than a crappy MMO.
Also, The Last of Us 2 was in no way disappointing. Joel got what he deserved, and anyone who sent death threats to devs and VO artists is a disgrace.

The fable games are underrated. All of them are very good. It's the same situation as with cyberpunk, If only they didn't oversell it with ridiculous promises, would have been able to appreciate it for what it was instead of lament for what it isn't

I feel like all the lists that have come out lately have been super negative.
The explanation regarding The Last of Us Part 2 applies to so many other games. People make up their minds as to what to expect in a follow up to a beloved game. When the reality doesn’t EXACTLY follow what they envisioned, they revolt, usually in pretty disgusting ways.
Look at Phisnom’s response (and the response in general) to FNAF Security Breach as a prime example.
Security Breach is another game ruined primarily by overhype.

I’ve played and beaten Batman Arkham knight four times (once on xbone, twice on ps4, once on ps5) 0 bugs. Not one ever. I get the PC version was buggy. But on console never had a bug glitch or anything. Great game

TLOU2 was very polarizing and I really hated Joel dying but in the end the entire game is a love note to Joel. There's a lot of things in the game you need to think about to understand so on the surface they are easy to miss, in the macro of it all the whole story revolves around how much everyone loves Joel. And to be honest, in retrospect as much as I also loved Joel he was quiet and fulfilled his character arc, which was the entirety of the first game. He didn't have a ton left to offer. They managed to make a revenge plot you actually care about. It's just all the Abby play that threw it off.
also what they tryna teach you is that joel and ellie, as much as we understand and love them, in the first game are what you would consider “ villains “ much like abby is considered that in part two. you could argue that joel is a anti hero but in reality we’re all a villain in someone’s life.. plus he was never a good man again once he lost his daughter and basically killed the entire world to “ get her bacc “. at what cost tho and that’s what that part two answers. that’s y we play as abby, because she is ellie. a lot of the philosophy of the game came after the first playthrough and a week of thinking ab it.
Dark souls 2 isn't generally hated by fans more that it's the worst dark souls because of slow gameplay continuity of level design like the lava being over a mountain the game has a light on the player at all times making it look cheap. Most first time deaths would be from banking if 10 weak enemies or uninformed traps than actually you dieing because you need to be better. Oh yeah and you have to pay for s when rolling there's alot if things that is wrong with ds2 compared to any souls game

I get that the hype off the legacy of the first one had an impact, and death threats are just stupid, but it’s okay to think TLOU2 is not a good game. A technical achievement? Sure, but the writing and narrative were very poorly constructed. I feel like you’re not allowed to think TLOU2 was a bad game.
