Only residents of a couple of cities actually need good public transport but the rest of us don’t.

Their vehicles are just as reliable as Toyota -- if not more -- since Toyota is now using Nissan (Jatco) CVTs in their small cars/crossovers, plus their 4 cylinder engines have consumed oil for some time. Fiats did earn a reputation for poor quality back in the 70s. From what I have researched, there were problems with substandard steel and more significantly with labour unrest and agitation in the Turin plants.
The Fiat of today is a totally different company. The only issues I had with mine were breaking of some interior plastics (supposedly an issue only through 2013 models) and two broken window regulator clips. I also had to replace an engine coolant thermostat. There were no issues with anything in the powertrain. It ran like a champ, day in and day out and it let me save a LOT of money on gasoline.

All car manufacturers have adopted toyota's quality philosophy. However it was really Ford who started it. Many safety features you find in cars today have its roots in Ford's safety programs. Toyota's quality is based on the 5S system which is now used by all. Unfortunately no matter how well the cars are made, the neglect, lack of proper maintenance and abuse will take its toll. People simply don't know how or lack the time to fo maintenance. Airplanes, firetrucks, ambulances, police cars are maintained on a regular basis. The rack up thousands of miles with no problems.

Honda and Toyota are playing the long game. Even though the compact car market is weak in N. America right now, they know that at some point, gas prices will rise, and people will be sick of their gas guzzling SUVs, so Honda and Toyota will be ready to sell their compacts and subcompacts (Civic, Fit, Corolla, Yaris). The stick shift was fun and let me get every ounce of performance out of the otherwise weak 101 HP engine. It was too small for long family trips but a perfrct vehicle for commuting and errands.
The thing I really miss is being able to squeeze this thing into ANY available pa4king slot.
If you do buy one, avoid the earliest models (through 2013) as there were some quality bugs to iron out (I had to replace both window regulators within a few months of one another).

We are also a disposable culture, so people that means people(not all) do not take care of their stuff and simply throw it away when it breaks. I do not understand the reliability argument, regarding Fiats cause US brands have had horribly constructed products with many problems and recalls. The fact that the entire US auto industry nearly imploded a few years ago, is proof of this....cause during the recession, the more reliable brands were still holding on, as whatever market was left, was still buying from them.

Would not go into 3rd, so it needed a new tranny and when you swap transmissions you always replace the clutch. The going price for a 2012, at that time, was $5,300. First thing I did was find a used tranny for $700. Next, the easy part was buying the clutch kit. Locally they wanted $900 to $1,100. I got on line and the lowest was $825. This was insane. What they wanted for just the kit was what you could have the entire job done for, on most cars. I then began looking at the price for other Fiat parts. All, exorbitant. BMW parts are less expensive. So much for owning a Fiat.

Because the Camry and Corolla are produced in massive numbers for a World market, so the overall cost to manufacture per car is lower. Fiat would also have to defray the cost of US compliance over many fewer cars. A common criticism the Toyota receives is they're bland and appliance like. If you want something that's more stylish and unique, then expect to pay more for it as it does cost more to make less.

Poor historical reliability (70's and 80's). For most Americans reliability is the number one priority. With poor public transit and the huge areas between many cities reliability has to be there. It's not uncommon for an American to do a 1000 mile/ 1600 km round trip road trip on a weekend. Most of that will be on highways with traffic going over 70 mph/ 115 kmph. You have to be reliable and have power to keep up on super highways to succeed in the USA market. Japanese and Korean small cars are doing just fine in the USA because they understand this.

@Jody Owen I do think Sedans , and cars are just as comfortable. Besides they give better mileage , lesser material usage - that adds up to being more environment friendly in the long run. American as a consumer is setting a bad example. Their obsessions with bigger vehicles have changed the auto industry even influencing other nations - as everywhere people are tempted to buy larger vehicles. Seriously, I do dig the concept of SUVs with extrme off-road capabilities, stronger chassis, their 4 wheel drive , differential lock feature . But crossovers - I feel are the most pointless category of vehicle- chassis of a sedan with looks of an SUV.
Also why USA don't have railroads. Railroads are one of the most economic means of transportation and also the fastest. Americans burn more fuel in consumer transportation than any other countries.

Fiats are just the wrong kind of car for the US. A 500 is the perfect kind of car if you're living in Italy or Europe and you need something small and nimble that can handle the tight spaces and windy roads they have there. It doesn't matter if you have a 1.4L engine, because you aren't going to be cruising at 55-80 mph for hours on end. Most of the driving in Europe is at speeds of 40 mph or less and less than an hour away.
I drove a Fiat Tipo (similar to a VW Golf) rental car when I was in Germany and honestly, that car felt big for most of the streets, roads and parking lots. I almost felt like I needed something smaller.
Conversely, I drove a Fiat 500 rental car in the US and it was just terrible. The engine was downshifting all the time, every pothole felt 5x bigger than it actually was and I had no space for anything more than a few small items. Not too mention the poor acceleration. And the fuel mileage wasn't even that much better than I'd get driving a Ford Fusion (/Mondeo). It did reasonably well in the city, aside from all the bumps and potholes it slammed into. I can't say how well it would do in 6+ inches of snow and ice since I only drove it in summer, but I know I'd want to update my life insurance policy before the first snowfall.
Honestly, the Fiat 500 is a very niche car in the US. It might make sense in the older cities of America and Canada but for most of America, it's just woefully incapable of being a good general purpose daily driver.

One of the big reasons small cars don't do well here is because Americans do so much highway travel. I think it's sad they might pull the Fiat brand out of the market, it just means less choice for the consumer.
